Python 3.11 Support

Hey,

My team ran into some issues trying to run this with Python 3.11. I'm not sure if that is known/expected. Can anyone confirm whether or not there is Python 3.11+ support?

this is very old software that is not being maintained, i think. @godber please confirm. Please tell us what you want to do and we can point you to working alternatives.

Yeah, I doubt anyone has looked at this in 10 years, I can archive the project if you like.

i think that's best. Like I said @aidenhammond let us know your use case then we can point you to a tool, but for a start, if want to read almost any planetary dataset, at least if it's archived on the PDS or PSA, then you can use the planetary data reader "pdr". installable via conda and pypi pip

We're running a fork of HORUS which uses this, we don't use it directly. I believe its being used solely for .cub file IO, though I don't have all the details. I can reach out to the folks working on HORUS with a suggestion if you have one, that would be great. Thanks!

Edit: And which variant of .cub format? Does your use require only reading them, or also writing valid .cubs?

@karlhillx As discussed upthread, nobody is maintaining this repository. Therefore there is nobody to accept your PR.

I will note that if someone were reviewing PRs, then this one would break backward compatibility for legacy users. (Of which there apparently are some.)

Do as thou wilt, but I suggest that if your work relies critically on planetaryimage, and if none of the actively maintained alternatives will work for you, then you should maintain / update a forked copy of planetaryimage of your own.

HORUS is a denoising software for LRO NACs. Unfortunate to hear that this repository won't be kept up with; thank you for the PR and I'll take your advice on keeping a fork for ourselves.

I will add that ISIS2 cube format has support using planetary data reader "pdr" and okay read support in GDAL/rasterio. Although GDAL would be a heavy tool just to read ISIS2 cubes.

ISIS3+ cubes are likely to be slowly deprecated. ISIS v10+ has plans to transition to using TIFF/GeoTIFF (with it's own ISIS metadata TIFF tag). It will also use GDAL for most I/O activities. TIFF gives us compression, 64bit float, and cloud streaming to name a few enhancements (and better interoperability).
