A **tax lot** records the quantity, USD unit price, acquisition date, remaining quantity, and resulting cost basis for tokens acquired by one account. Lots are account-specific: moving tokens between the workspace's accounts carries their cost basis and acquisition date into the receiving account.

For disposals, Splits matches tokens to the oldest available lots first (FIFO). Each disposal records its proceeds, basis, gain or loss, and holding period.

The *Lots* tab shows lots open at the end of the selected period, or now when no end date is set. Filter by account, token, acquisition date, remaining quantity, or cost basis. Open a lot to review its source, remaining balance, disposals, realized gains or losses, and correction history.

Splits derives lots from indexed transactions. If the derived acquisition date or price is wrong, open the lot's actions and select *Edit lot*. The quantity cannot be edited because it comes from the account's actual token activity. Corrections persist when lots are recomputed; use *Revoke edits* to remove them.

# Crypto accounting [One workspace for transaction records, cost basis, and tax reports]

**Crypto accounting** in Splits brings [transactions, token balances, tax lots, and reports](/accounting) into one workspace. You can also [import an external address](/accounting#imported-accounts) to include its history without moving funds to Splits.

## How it works

- **Review one transaction history.** [Accounting](/accounting#transactions) combines inbound and outbound activity across the workspace. Filter by account, network, token, date, direction, or memo.
- **Track each acquisition.** [Lots](/accounting#lots) record the quantity, acquisition date, and USD cost basis of tokens in each account. Splits matches disposals to lots using FIFO.
- **Preserve basis on internal moves.** A [transfer between workspace accounts](/accounting#lots) carries its original basis and acquisition date into the receiving account.
- **Bring past activity into view.** [Imported accounts](/accounting#imported-accounts) add external EVM address history. They grant **no signing authority** and do not become Splits accounts.
- **Correct source data.** [Edit or seed a lot](/accounting#lots) when its price or acquisition date needs correction. The lot detail shows its correction history. Token quantity comes from indexed activity and cannot be edited.
- **Export records for your books.** [Reports](/accounting#reports) include statements, transaction history, token balances, realized gains and losses, open lots, and a lot timeline. Give an accountant [read-only access](/workspaces/roles#read-only-members) to review the workspace.

## Prepare your books

Prerequisites: create a [workspace](/workspaces). An [Owner](/workspaces/roles) must import external accounts.

::::steps

### Add the accounts you need

Use [Splits accounts](/accounts) for current activity. To include an older address, use *Import account* on the [Imported tab](/accounting#imported-accounts). Select its networks and an optional cutoff date.

### Review transactions and balances

Filter [Transactions](/accounting#transactions) by period, account, and token. Compare the starting and ending balances. Review [hidden tokens](/accounting/spam) if expected activity is absent.

### Review and correct lots

Open [Lots](/accounting#lots) to inspect basis, disposals, and correction history. Seed pre-existing inventory or edit a price or acquisition date if the derived value is wrong. Recompute lots to refresh the results.

### Generate reports

Select a period and account scope in [Reports](/accounting#reports). Generate a statement or export transaction history, token balances, gains, or lots for your accountant.

::::

## Limits

- Accounting history is unavailable on [partially supported networks](/introduction/networks-and-assets).
- A [lot warning](/accounting#lots) can signal a balance difference or a correction that Splits could not apply. Review warnings before using the reports.
- Reports support bookkeeping and tax preparation. Splits does not categorize transactions into a P&L or sync with accounting software yet. See the [cost basis deep dive](https://splits.org/blog/how-splits-tracks-cost-basis/).

## Next steps

- [Open Accounting](https://app.splits.org/accounting)
- [Accounting](/accounting): review the tabs, imported accounts, and report formats
- [Cost basis deep dive](https://splits.org/blog/how-splits-tracks-cost-basis/): how Splits derives and checks lots

## Programmatic access

Via the [Splits CLI / MCP](/introduction/agents):

- `splits accounting lots list`: review tax lots (**Read** scope)
- `splits accounting imports create`: import an external address (**Write** scope and a user-bound API key)
- `splits accounting reports generate <report>`: generate a report (**Write** scope and a user-bound API key)
