/ and /README.html serve the same README and each declared itself canonical. A front-matter default scoped to README.md sets canonical_url to the homepage for both.

The README renders twice on Pages, as / and as /README.html, each
declaring itself canonical. Google saw two identical pages competing for
the same queries; both now name the homepage as canonical.
