Resolves CHAT-44 and CHAT-40.

Smooth scrolls in Thread used the browser's native smooth scroll, whose duration and easing can't be configured. This lets the timing be set from CSS.

API

Name Purpose
--thread-scroll Shorthand <duration> <easing>, or none. Accepts a Motion spring() string as-is.
--thread-scroll-duration / --thread-scroll-easing Longhands; override the shorthand. The duration is the cap when a speed is set.
--thread-scroll-speed px/s; the duration follows the distance.
data-scrolling="land | follow | bottom | top | message" On the root while a timed scroll runs. Set before the timing is read, so each kind can be timed on its own.
  • No variables set: native smooth scroll, as before. none opts back out over any longhand. 0ms jumps instantly. Under reduced motion, scrolls are always instant.
  • Applies to every smooth scroll: land, follow, scrollToBottom, scrollToTop, scrollToMessage. The JS API is unchanged.

How it works

  • Animation: one scrollTo per frame, only while animating. The browser's Web Animations API evaluates the easing, so any CSS easing works (verified in Chrome 155).
  • Streaming during an animation: the destination is re-read every frame, so a reply that streams in during a long land is carried along instead of restarting the scroll. In "jump" mode the land's destination is fixed.
  • Interruption: any wheel, touch, scroll key or scrollbar press stops the animation and re-reads the bottom edge, so a drag away releases the follow exactly as it would natively.

Styled layer and playground

  • Styled Thread: eases out over 400ms and pins the follow instantly unless animateFollow is set.
  • Playground settings → Chat: Scroll timing (Default / Native / easings / Spring), Duration, Speed and Animate follow.
  • Docs: a "Timing the scroll" section and a scroll-timing demo, with a Motion spring and a 5s land.

Measurements (Chrome)

These are directional: one run per variant, a synthetic DOM stream, one fast machine.

  • Instant follow vs animated: the instant follow had 0 frame callbacks and about half the lag (the newest text sits nearer the visible edge).
  • Fixed-duration animated follow: no smoother on big chunks (largest one-frame jump 340px, the same as instant).
  • Speed-paced follow: smooths big chunks only on an idle main thread (133px vs 340px), with more than twice the lag. Under load the jump is back to 304px.
  • Skipped optimizations: caching the timing check (0.04ms per scroll) and dropping the per-frame layout read (~0.09ms per frame), since neither paid off.

Also fixes CHAT-40: scrollToMessage scrolled the page

  • The bug: the native path used row.scrollIntoView(), which scrolls every scrollable ancestor. In the docs Jump demo, the page jumped along with the thread on every outline click.
  • The fix: the native path now uses the same destination as the timed path. That's alignedScrollTop: scrollIntoView's block semantics, including the row's scroll-margin and the viewport's scroll-padding. Only the thread's viewport scrolls, via scrollContainerTo, and nothing in the thread calls scrollIntoView any more.
  • Percentage scroll-padding now resolves against the viewport's height. The computed value keeps percentages, and they used to be read as pixels.
  • Styled Thread: pads its viewport by the overlay heights, so a row scrolled into view lands below the top fade and above the composer.
  • Jump demo: gets a 24px scroll-pt-6.
  • Docs: show how to set scroll-padding on Thread.Viewport.

Docs Jump demo, docs scroller position across three outline clicks (verified in Chrome):

q-7 q-1 q-4
Before 4039 → 5043 → 4709 → 4820
After 4039 4039 4039

Also fixes two existing bugs

  • isAtBottom / data-at-bottom no longer stick after scrollToTop or scrollToMessage leaves the bottom.
  • Reduced motion resolves to "instant", so a CSS scroll-behavior: smooth can't animate it.

Testing

  • Unit tests: 38 new, including the CHAT-40 cases: native path, reduced motion, percentage padding (556 in the package); typecheck and lint pass.
  • Verified in Chrome: the 5s land with growth mid-flight, interrupting with a scrollbar press then dragging away, at-bottom while scrolling away, the compiled styled CSS, and the playground toggle.
  • Not yet tested in Safari. linear() needs Safari 17.2+; older versions fall back to ease.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds CSS-configured timed scrolling to chat threads. It adds timing and follow-animation controls, live-end tracking, gesture interruption, reduced-motion behavior, tests, documentation, and demos.

Changes: Thread scroll timing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timing contract and animation engine
lib/store/settings.ts, components/ai/thread.tsx, packages/chat/src/thread/scroll-animation.ts, packages/chat/tests/thread-scroll-animation.test.tsx
The settings store and ThreadRoot expose scroll timing options. Timing helpers parse CSS values, resolve durations and aligned destinations, and animate scroll positions. Tests cover parsing, alignment, easing, progress, and cancellation.
Thread scrolling and interruption
packages/chat/src/thread/thread.tsx, packages/chat/src/thread/geometry.ts, packages/chat/src/thread/index.ts, packages/chat/tests/thread-scroll-animation.test.tsx
Bottom, top, landing, and message scrolling use the shared timing system. End-directed animations can track the live end. Viewport gestures interrupt scripted animations, and reduced-motion scrolling uses instant behavior. The public module exports ThreadScrollKind.
Playground timing controls
lib/store/settings.ts, components/chat.tsx, components/playground-settings.tsx
ChatDefaultLayout maps timing, duration, speed, and follow-animation settings to CSS styles. The playground exposes timing choices, duration and speed sliders, and an animate-follow toggle.
Timing documentation and demos
content/docs/primitives/thread.mdx, content/docs/primitives/thread/demos/*, .changeset/thread-scroll-timing.md
The documentation describes timing variables, scroll behavior, viewport padding, and data-scrolling. Demos show timing presets and use a shared streamed-chat implementation.

🟡 Minor · Do not re-observe after a gesture that releases follow. · thread.tsx:284-293

packages/chat/src/thread/thread.tsx:284-293
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not re-observe after a gesture that releases follow.

interruptScroll() re-observes the bottom sentinel before the wheel or touch handler releases follow. If the sentinel is still intersecting, the fresh observer entry sets followingRef.current back to true. Later content growth can then call scrollToEnd("follow", ...) and override the user’s upward gesture.

Skip re-observation for upward wheel, touch, and key gestures. Keep it for gestures that do not release follow.

On the outside-diff comment about interruptScroll re-arming the follow: confirmed, and fixed in dc861d1, but not with the suggested diff. Skipping the re-observe for upward gestures would leave data-at-bottom stale whenever the sentinel left view during the animation, which is the case the re-read was there for.

The root cause was that the guard dropped the "bottom left view" entry, so the interrupt had to re-read it a frame later. The thread now keeps the last edge the observer reported and the interrupt acts on it immediately. With no re-read, nothing can re-arm a follow the gesture released.

Verified in Chrome on the scroll-timing demo: a wheel up during a follow scroll now stops following (before the fix, the thread snapped back to the bottom), and a wheel down still follows. Unit tests cover wheel up, wheel down, and an edge change held off during the scroll.

🟡 Minor · Clear the end-scroll guard when a scroll away replaces an animation. · thread.tsx:316-321

packages/chat/src/thread/thread.tsx:316-321
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear the end-scroll guard when a scroll away replaces an animation.

If scrollToTop or scrollToMessage replaces an end-directed animation, stopAnimation() cancels it but leaves autoScrollingRef set. The bottom observer can then suppress the departure caused by the new scroll. After the guard expires, no new intersection crossing is required, so isAtBottom and data-at-bottom can remain true away from the bottom. Clear the guard for a scroll away, and apply any bottom-edge departure already held by the observer.

The flagged motion import was already on main; this PR only adds spring (a plain function, no component) to the line. #91 moves the app to LazyMotion and drops motion from this import, so after the rebase onto it the line becomes { AnimatePresence, spring, stagger }. No change here.

False positive. preserveOnPrependRef comes from useAsRef, which returns a stable ref (biome.json marks it stableResult), so the effect never sees a stale value, and Biome rejects adding it to the deps. The line changed only because scrollToBottom became scrollToEnd.

🟡 Minor · Reconcile follow state when the settle guard expires. · thread.tsx:291-297

packages/chat/src/thread/thread.tsx:291-297
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reconcile follow state when the settle guard expires.

A scrollbar drag can occur after the scripted end animation finishes. The pointer handler calls interruptScroll(), but animationRef.current is already null, so the handler returns without releasing follow. If the observer reports bottomInViewRef.current = false before the settle timeout or scrollend, the guard suppresses leaveBottom(). Neither guard-release path reconciles that state. Later stream growth can therefore scroll the viewport back to the end.

Apply the same bottom-state reconciliation when the guard expires.

Update the auto-scroll settle timeout and scrollend settle handler to reconcile
bottom state when the guard expires: if bottomInViewRef indicates the bottom is
no longer visible, call leaveBottom so following is released. Keep
interruptScroll’s existing behavior unchanged.

Smooth scrolls used the browser's native scroll, whose duration and easing
can't be configured. Setting --thread-scroll (<duration> <easing>), its
longhands, or --thread-scroll-speed on the root now animates every smooth
scroll the thread starts: the land, the follow, scrollToBottom,
scrollToTop and scrollToMessage. The browser's Web Animations API
evaluates the easing, so any CSS easing works, including a Motion spring()
printed as linear(). With no variables set, scrolls stay native;
`--thread-scroll: none` opts back out over any longhand.

While a timed scroll runs, the root carries data-scrolling naming its
kind. It is set before the timing is read, so selectors can time each
kind on its own. The destination is re-read every frame, so a reply that
streams in during a long land is carried along instead of restarting the
scroll; in "jump" the land's destination is fixed. Any wheel, touch,
scroll key or scrollbar press stops the animation and re-reads the bottom
edge, so a drag away releases the follow as it would natively.

The styled Thread eases out over 400ms and pins the follow instantly
unless `animateFollow` is set: measured in Chrome, an animated follow
trailed the newest text further below the fold for no smoothing once the
main thread was busy. The playground gets Scroll timing, Duration, Speed
and Animate follow settings, and the docs a section and demo.

Also fixes two existing bugs: isAtBottom no longer sticks after
scrollToTop or scrollToMessage leaves the bottom, and reduced motion
resolves to "instant" so a CSS scroll-behavior can't animate it.

…AT-40)

scrollToMessage's native path used row.scrollIntoView, which scrolls every
scrollable ancestor until the row is in view, so a thread embedded in a
page moved the page too: in the docs Jump demo the page jumped by up to a
screen per outline click. It now uses the same destination as the timed
path (alignedScrollTop: scrollIntoView's block semantics, the row's
scroll-margin and the viewport's scroll-padding included) and scrolls
only the thread's viewport through scrollContainerTo. Nothing in the
thread calls scrollIntoView any more.

scroll-padding percentages are resolved against the viewport's height:
the computed value keeps them as percentages, which were read as pixels.

The styled Thread pads its viewport by the overlay heights, so a row
scrolled into view lands below the top fade and above the composer, not
under them. The Jump demo pads its viewport by 24px, and the docs show
how to set scroll-padding on Thread.Viewport.

…sture takes over (CHAT-44)

The guard drops the bottom sentinel leaving view while the thread's own
scroll runs, and the observer reports a crossing only once. An interrupt
re-observed the sentinel to recover it, but that entry lands a frame after
the gesture: a wheel or drag up near the bottom released the follow, the
re-read found the bottom in view and re-armed it, and the next growth
scrolled the user back down.

The thread now keeps the last edge the observer reported, guard or not, and
an interrupt acts on it at once. No re-read, so nothing can re-arm a follow
the gesture released.

The scroll-timing presets expose their selection with aria-pressed, and the
scroll-timing and jump viewports draw a focus-visible ring in place of the
outline they remove.

…roll-timing demos

scroll-timing.tsx was a near-copy of autoscroll.tsx: the same scripted
stream, mode switch, card, transcript and composer. They now live in
streamed-chat.tsx (useStreamedChat, ModeSwitch, StreamedChat), and each demo
keeps only what it shows: its modes or presets, seed and reply. The docs show
the shared file as its own tab.

The autoscroll demo picks up the switch's aria-pressed and the viewport's
focus ring along the way.

…order

The duration is whichever top-level token is a <time>, like transition, so
`ease-out 400ms` no longer reads as an easing with no duration and silently
keeps the native scroll. Parentheses keep a function easing in one token.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No easing function takes a <time>, so the parentheses-aware tokenizer was
never needed to find the duration; a plain split does it, and each token is
parsed once.
