Description

Fixes the perf-sanity failures from NVBugs 6843483, 6843484 and 6843490 that still fail in the latest release/1.3 post-merge (#29).

These bugs were filed against main post-merge #2987, #2989 and #2990. Three groups of failures are already fixed and are not part of this PR:

Two root causes remain on release/1.3, one per commit.

1. Multi-node aggregated perf-sanity stages are not kept inside one NVLink domain

Affected stages:

  • GB200-16_GPUs-4_Nodes-PyTorch-PerfSanity-GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-1
  • GB300-16_GPUs-4_Nodes-PyTorch-PerfSanity-GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-{1,2}
  • GB300-32_GPUs-8_Nodes-PyTorch-PerfSanity-GEN1-NODE8-GPU32-Post-Merge-{1,2}

The cases are gen_only_no_context DeepSeek-R1 con4096 dep16, DeepSeek-V4-Pro con666 dep16 / con180 dep32, and GLM-5 con512 dep32. In the bugs they appear as ncclGinGdakiCreateContext ... failed: 2, no new log output for 7201s, or CANCELLED by 146504 (the idle-GPU reaper).

What happens.

  • runLLMTestlistWithSbatch adds --segment=<nodeCount> only for Disagg-PerfSanity and SingleNvlinkDomain stages.
  • Aggregated multi-node perf-sanity stages (aggMultiNodeMode) get no segment, so Slurm can spread one EP16/EP32 job over several NVL72 racks. On oci-hsg, oci-jhb and oci-aga, topology/block uses 18-node blocks, one per rack.
  • Across racks, NVLinkOneSided and NVLinkTwoSided fail with CUDA_ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE (MNNVL memory cannot be mapped). The MoE communication factory then falls back to NcclEP.
  • With NcclEP the case crashes in NCCL GIN context creation (ncclGinGdakiCreateContext ... failed: 2, nccl_ep.cc:2130) or in NCCL-EP NVFP4 dispatch requires uint8 tokens. Otherwise it stalls with idle GPUs until the reaper or the 2 h no-output watchdog cancels it.

Evidence: Slurm nodelist vs. outcome for these 5 stages. Nodelists come from the stage logs of release/1.3 #20–#29 and main #3009–#3017. Builds whose logs have expired or that hit the #3009 DNS outage are excluded.

Placement Runs Passed Failed
1 rack 12 12 0
2+ racks 48 0 48

Fix. --segment=<nodeCount> is now also requested in aggMultiNodeMode, the same as for Disagg-PerfSanity and SingleNvlinkDomain. This one-line change in jenkins/L0_Test.groovy affects only multi-node stages whose name contains PerfSanity; every such stage is ≤ 8 nodes, well under the 18-node block size.

2. Cherry-pick #20000: stale disagg rendezvous files and the CI no-output watchdog

Affected stage: GB300-12_GPUs-3_Nodes-PyTorch-Disagg-PerfSanity-CTX1-NODE1-GPU4-GEN1-NODE2-GPU8-Post-Merge-1, case disagg_upload-e2e-gb300_deepseek-r1-fp4_128k8k_con256_ctx1_pp4_gen1_dep8_eplb0_mtp1_ccb-NIXL.

Test Coverage

  • Stages fixed by commit 1:

  • pre-commit passes on the changed files.

PR Checklist

  • Please check this after reviewing the above items as appropriate for this PR.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Dev Engineer Review

  • jenkins/L0_Test.groovy now enables --segment=${nodeCount} for aggregated multi-node PerfSanity stages, in addition to disaggregated and SingleNvlinkDomain stages. The change targets keeping these Slurm jobs within one NVLink domain.
  • slurm_launch_draft.sh removes stale hostname and benchmark-status files before a run. It prints a benchmark-log heartbeat every 600 seconds and stops the heartbeat after the benchmark completes or fails.
  • The two GB300 DeepSeek-R1 benchmark configs reduce multi_round from 3 to 2. The integration-test changes document cleanup and retry assumptions without changing test behavior.
  • The supplied context reports pre-commit passes, but provides no results from rerunning the requested stages. Review finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified test-related files: tests/integration/defs/perf/test_perf_sanity.py and two GB300 DeepSeek-R1 benchmark configuration files. The test-selector entries for the affected case are present in both tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/ and tests/integration/test_lists/qa/.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. Stage rerun results were not supplied.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • jenkins/L0_Test.groovy: Verify that aggregated multi-node PerfSanity stages receive --segment=${nodeCount} and that the option is limited to the intended modes.
  • jenkins/scripts/perf/disaggregated/slurm_launch_draft.sh: Verify stale-file cleanup, heartbeat output during long runs, heartbeat shutdown, and failure cleanup.
  • tests/integration/defs/perf/test_perf_sanity.py: The comments describe hostname cleanup and retry assumptions. The related test selector appears in the QA and test-db lists.
  • tests/scripts/perf-sanity/disaggregated/gb300_deepseek-r1-fp4_128k8k_con256_ctx1_pp4_gen1_dep8_eplb0_mtp1_ccb-NIXL.yaml: Verify that setting multi_round to 2 retains the intended perf-sanity coverage.
  • tests/scripts/perf/disaggregated/gb300_deepseek-r1-fp4_128k8k_con256_ctx1_pp4_gen1_dep8_eplb0_mtp1_ccb-NIXL.yaml: Verify that setting multi_round to 2 retains the intended benchmark coverage.

…ore each perf-sanity attempt (NVIDIA#20000)

…jobs in one NVLink domain

The aggregated multi-node perf-sanity stages (PerfSanity-Node2-GPU8 and the
gen_only_no_context PerfSanity-GEN1-NODE{2,4,8} stages) were submitted without
--segment, so Slurm could spread one EP16/EP32 job across several NVL72 racks.
Across racks the wide-EP MoE all-to-all cannot map MNNVL memory, so the
communication factory falls back to NcclEP, which then crashes in NCCL GIN
context creation or stalls until the idle-GPU reaper cancels the job.

Request --segment=<nodeCount> for these stages, the same way the
Disagg-PerfSanity and SingleNvlinkDomain stages already do.

Walkthrough

The changes enable segmentation for aggregated multi-node PerfSanity stages, add output cleanup and heartbeat logging to the disaggregated SLURM launcher, and reduce multi_round from 3 to 2 in two benchmark configurations.

Changes

PerfSanity execution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Benchmark round counts
tests/scripts/perf-sanity/disaggregated/*.yaml, tests/scripts/perf/disaggregated/*.yaml
The two benchmark configurations now set multi_round to 2.
Aggregated task segmentation
jenkins/L0_Test.groovy
Aggregated multi-node PerfSanity stages now request SLURM segmentation.
Disaggregated launch preparation and heartbeat
jenkins/scripts/perf/disaggregated/slurm_launch_draft.sh, tests/integration/defs/perf/test_perf_sanity.py
The launcher removes stale hostname and benchmark-status files before a run. It logs a timestamp and the latest benchmark-log line every 600 seconds while srun runs, then stops the heartbeat after completion or before failure cleanup. Comments describe hostname-directory reuse and stale-address removal on retry.

Validated the --segment fix on GB200 (oci-hsg), since the PR CI could not run the multi-GPU stages without the ci: full pre-merge approved label.

Case: perf/test_perf_sanity.py::test_e2e[aggr_upload-gen_only_no_context-gb200_deepseek-r1-fp4_8k1k_con4096_ctx1_dep4_gen1_dep16_eplb0_mtp1_ccb-NIXL], the case GB200-16_GPUs-4_Nodes-PyTorch-PerfSanity-GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-1 runs.

Setup, matching CI release/1.3 post-merge #29:

This run (job 7946533) CI release/1.3 #29 (passing, 1 rack)
Nodes nvl72004-T[03-06] (1 rack) nvl72175-T[06,08-10] (1 rack)
MoE comm strategy NVLinkOneSided ×944, NcclEP ×0 NVLinkOneSided ×944
GIN errors / tracebacks 0 / 0 0 / 0
Requests 4096/4096 successful, 0 failed 4096/4096 successful, 0 failed
Output tok/s 94,630 94,475
pytest 1 passed passed

With --segment=4, Slurm placed all four nodes in one NVL72 rack, as it did for the two earlier attempts of this run (nvl72057, nvl72093).

Those two earlier attempts were setup issues on my side, unrelated to the fix. One stalled in a 23 GB registry pull on 2 of the 4 nodes. The other used the standalone manylinux_2_39 wheel, whose libpg_utils.so did not match the container's torch. Neither reached model load.

@ZhanruiSunCh @Shixiaowei02: requesting your review, since you approved #20000 on main. This is the release/1.3 fix for NVBug 6843484 (P0 for 1.3.0). It has two commits:

  1. Cherry-pick of [https://nvbugs/6718911][fix] Fix stale disagg rendezvous after requeue and CI watchdog cancelling long perf-sanity runs #20000 (stale rendezvous-file cleanup, a heartbeat while the benchmark runs, multi_round 3→2 for the 128k8k case). slurm_launch_draft.sh, test_perf_sanity.py and both yamls are byte-identical to main at [https://nvbugs/6718911][fix] Fix stale disagg rendezvous after requeue and CI watchdog cancelling long perf-sanity runs #20000. On release/1.3 the GB300 DeepSeek-R1 128k8k disagg e2e case is cancelled by the 7200 s watchdog in every build (Speed compare with vllm? #24–Does the project team plan to support MiniGPT4? #31). On main it has uploaded results since [https://nvbugs/6718911][fix] Fix stale disagg rendezvous after requeue and CI watchdog cancelling long perf-sanity runs #20000.
  2. --segment for aggregated multi-node perf-sanity stages in jenkins/L0_Test.groovy. This is the same line as [https://nvbugs/6843484][fix] Keep multi-node aggregated perf-sanity jobs in one NVLink domain #20418 on main, and it fixes the GEN1-NODE4/GEN1-NODE8 failures (13/13 single-rack runs passed, 60/60 multi-rack runs failed). It was validated on GB200 with the release/1.3 Tactic running out of memory during Code Llama 34B build #29 CI wheel (comment above).

Owner coverage: trt-llm-infra-devs for jenkins/** and tests/integration/defs/perf/, and trt-llm-disagg-devs (or trt-llm-perf-devs) for the two disagg yamls. I answered and resolved CodeRabbit's thread on the cleanup: testOutputDir is per-job in CI. The five multi-GPU stages need the ci: full pre-merge approved label, which is added automatically once the PR is approved. I'll re-run them then.

Thanks @chienchunhung! That approval covers the trt-llm-disagg-devs files (the two disagg yamls).

@tburt-nv: adding you for the trt-llm-infra-devs part, which still needs an approval:

The evidence and GPU validation are in the description and the comments above. CI #262 is green up to the multi-GPU stages, which need the approval label.

CI #78313 (pipeline #282). Every job was submitted with #SBATCH --segment=<nodes> and landed in a single NVL72 rack:

Stage Result
GB300 Disagg-PerfSanity-CTX1-NODE1-GPU4-GEN1-NODE2-GPU8-Post-Merge-1 (DeepSeek-R1 128k8k con256 e2e) ✅ passed. It took 5550 s, and the heartbeat kept the 7200 s watchdog quiet. On release/1.3 this case had been cancelled by the watchdog in every post-merge build from #24 to #31.
GB200 GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-1 (DeepSeek-R1 con4096) ✅ passed
GB300 GEN1-NODE8-GPU32-Post-Merge-1 (DeepSeek-V4-Pro con180) ✅ passed
GB300 GEN1-NODE8-GPU32-Post-Merge-2 (GLM-5 con512) ✅ passed
GB300 GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-1 (DeepSeek-R1 con4096) skipped (release/1.3 waives it under nvbugs/6912139)
GB300 GEN1-NODE4-GPU16-Post-Merge-2 (DeepSeek-V4-Pro con666) ❌ the harness false positive also seen on #20418: the server came up on one rack (nvl72d128-T[06-07,09,11]), then the log scan matched a pip WARNING: Retrying ... ReadTimeoutError(host='download.pytorch.org') line from the install step. pip had recovered.

--stage-list runs are reported as "Partly Tested" and don't update blossom-ci, so I'm starting the full pre-merge pipeline now.

Full pre-merge pipeline #290: none of the failures come from this PR's files.

Pre-merge CI tests the PR head as-is, so I merged the current release/1.3 (a5eb663170) into the branch to pick up #20384. It was a fast-forward push. git diff release/1.3 HEAD is still exactly the PR's original 5-file patch, byte-identical. Approvals and the label carried over. Re-running.

Full pre-merge pipeline #297 on 0bd6bc8: 56,012 tests passed, 2 failed. Neither failure comes from this PR.

  • Build-SBSA (ARM build) failed during the CMake fetch step: fatal: unable to access 'https://github.com/wjakob/nanobind/': The requested URL returned error: 403. GitHub returned an HTTP 403 for a dependency download, which is a transient infra problem. Because there was no ARM build, the SBSA single- and multi-GPU stages, including the five affected perf-sanity stages, didn't run in this pipeline.
  • A100X-PyTorch-1: unittest/llmapi/test_llm_pytorch.py::test_llm_disagg_streaming_gen_cancelled[PYTHON] hung and was killed ("terminated unexpectedly"). This LLM-API cancellation test doesn't touch the files in this PR, and it hasn't failed in any recent release/1.3 or main post-merge build, or in other release/1.3 PR runs. It looks like a one-off hang.

All other x86 single-GPU stages passed. Re-running on the same commit; CI reuses the stages that already passed.
