Dev Engineer Review

  • The shared helper detects online EPLB across disaggregated worker and aggregated server configurations. It loads extra_llm_api_config_path as a base and applies inline top-level overrides.
  • The L0 and local submit paths add tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G when online EPLB is enabled and no mount targets /dev/shm. Source-only /dev/shm mounts count as existing mounts.
  • YAML read or parse failures can interrupt submission. Invalid non-mapping extra config files raise ValueError.
  • No product code changes are reported. Review finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_submit.py. Tests cover EPLB detection, config-file loading and overrides, invalid YAML mappings, existing mount handling, and generated CI launch arguments.
  • No test-list changes are reported. This unit-test file does not require test-db/ or manual-QA list membership.
  • The PR objectives report 31 passing local tests and GB300 validation. These results are reported, not independently verified here.
  • Coverage verdict: sufficient for the described detection and mount behavior.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • jenkins/scripts/perf/benchmark_utils.py: Verify inline and file-based configuration detection, top-level override behavior, and handling of existing /dev/shm mounts. Missing or malformed YAML files can cause errors.
  • jenkins/scripts/perf/submit.py: Verify CI launch arguments add the 640G mount only when online EPLB is enabled and no /dev/shm mount exists.
  • jenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py: Verify generate_srun_args receives the loaded configuration and applies the mount logic for online EPLB.
  • tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_submit.py: Tests detection, error handling, mount behavior, and CI launch output. It is a unit-test file, not an integration test-list entry.

Description

Fixes https://nvbugs/6384589: in the Kimi-K2.5 NVFP4 eplb416 disaggregated perf cases (qa/llm_perf_multinode.txt, GB200 and GB300), every GEN worker dies with SIGBUS (BUS_ADRERR, "Non-existent physical address") at ~90% of weight loading. It had been triaged as a node hardware fault. The real cause is the size of /dev/shm in the test container.

Root cause. Online EPLB (moe_config.load_balancer.layer_updates_per_iter > 0) keeps a host copy of every MoE layer's expert weights in POSIX shared memory, once per node. For Kimi-K2.5 NVFP4 that is 24,772,864 B x 384 experts x 60 MoE layers = 531.6 GiB per node. The nodes have enough RAM (Slurm RealMemory 942,080 MB on GB200 and GB300), but /dev/shm inside the perf container is the default tmpfs, half of RAM = 480 GiB. Only 54 of the 60 layers fit; the expert copy into the next segment touches a page the tmpfs cannot allocate, and the kernel raises SIGBUS. Other online-EPLB models in the perf lists fit under 480 GiB (GLM-5 NVFP4 379.7 GiB, DeepSeek-V3.2 / R1 FP4 304.5 GiB), so only the K2.5 cases fail.

How it was introduced. The retired QA harness (tests/integration/defs/perf/disagg/) mounted tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G for Kimi-K2 cases (ededeec, #9686). The K2.5 eplb416 cases were created with online EPLB in the current harness by #14960 (835fd61). The current harness (test_perf_sanity.py + jenkins/scripts/perf/{submit.py,local/submit.py}) has never sized /dev/shm, and #15290 removed the old harness the next day.

Change. When any worker config in a perf-sanity YAML enables online EPLB (inline load_balancer or a load_balancer YAML file with layer_updates_per_iter > 0), the L0 (jenkins/scripts/perf/submit.py) and local/QA (jenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py) launchers append tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G to --container-mounts, unless the pipeline already mounts /dev/shm. The detection and mount logic lives in jenkins/scripts/perf/benchmark_utils.py, which both launchers already import. No product code changes.

This replaces #20526, which also changed moe_load_balancer.py; that part is not needed and has been dropped.

Verification (1.3.0rc29 image, unchanged product code, CI Kimi-K2.5-NVFP4 checkpoint, the failing GEN config with TP/EP 32 -> 4 on one node, which keeps the per-node shared-memory demand unchanged):

Run Cluster /dev/shm Result
1298501 GB300 (oci-aga) default 480 GiB SIGBUS at 88% of weight load on all 4 ranks (bug signature)
1313171 GB300 (oci-aga) tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G, the value this change's local/submit.py emits for disagg-gen_only-gb300_kimi-k25-..._eplb416_... all 1433 tensors loaded, moe_load_balancer finalize model done on all ranks, /health 200, no SIGBUS
8043513 GB200 (oci-hsg) 480 GiB vs 640G tmpfs (shared-memory replay of the same write pattern) 480 GiB: SIGBUS after layer 54/60; 640G: all 60 layers written

A full model start on GB200 is still queued.

Test Coverage

tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_submit.py (CPU, collected by l0_cpu.yml unittest/scripts):

  • online-EPLB detection for inline, file-based and aggregated (server_configs) configs, plus the checked-in K2.5 eplb416 YAML (online) and a DeepSeek-V4 static-EPLB YAML (not online);
  • the mount is appended, left out when online EPLB is off, and not added when /dev/shm is already mounted;
  • end to end: the launch scripts generated by both submit.py for the K2.5 case contain tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G.

Local run: 31 passed.

…erf cases

Online EPLB stages a host copy of every MoE layer's expert weights in
/dev/shm on each node. For Kimi-K2.5 NVFP4 that is about 532 GiB, while
the container's default /dev/shm is half of host RAM (480 GiB on
GB200/GB300), so the GEN workers die with SIGBUS during weight loading.

When any worker config in a perf-sanity YAML enables online EPLB, both
the L0 and the local perf submit scripts now append
tmpfs:/dev/shm:size=640G to --container-mounts, unless /dev/shm is
already mounted.

Walkthrough

The performance submit utilities detect online EPLB settings in worker and server configurations. When enabled, the local and CI submit paths add a 640G /dev/shm tmpfs mount unless a mount targeting /dev/shm already exists.

Online EPLB mount handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration detection and mount construction
jenkins/scripts/perf/benchmark_utils.py, tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_submit.py
Helpers inspect worker and server configurations and load load-balancer settings from inline dictionaries or YAML paths. They append the 640G mount when layer_updates_per_iter is positive, unless an existing mount targets /dev/shm. Tests cover configuration detection and mount behavior.
Submit-path integration
jenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py, jenkins/scripts/perf/submit.py, tests/unittest/scripts/test_perf_submit.py

…fig_path and source-only /dev/shm mounts

uses_online_eplb now checks the config each worker is launched with: the
extra_llm_api_config_path file is the base and the inline fields replace its
top-level keys, matching ServerConfig.merged_llm_api_config_data(). A file that
is not a YAML mapping raises ValueError at submit time.

add_eplb_shm_mount resolves the container target of each --container-mounts
entry the way pyxis does, so a source-only /dev/shm entry counts as an existing
/dev/shm mount instead of getting a second tmpfs mount on the same target.

Annotate the touched helpers and add tests for both cases.

….3: Mount a 640G /dev/shm for online-EPLB perf cases

Forward-port of release/1.3 PR NVIDIA#20531
(release/1.3 commit 2401956) to main.

Adapted to main: the new tests reuse the submit-module fixtures and the
_fake_sinfo helper that main already defines in test_perf_submit.py.
