[None][test] Add a warmup pass before perf-sanity measured clients - #21123
The change adds an unmeasured warmup pass to perf-sanity and selected single-node bench and serve tests. It changes test infrastructure, not library code. The pass preserves the client traffic shape, uses a seed offset by one, and records its successful request count as l_warmup_pass_requests.
The pass is disabled by TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0, false, no, or off. The harness skips ineligible clients and limits the pass to the first measured client per server when time-breakdown collection is enabled. It waits for warmup records and excludes them from measured time-breakdown results. Nonzero exits, timeouts, and total request failure fail the test; partial request failures warn. Real-text serve clients skip the pass with a warning when the dataset cannot supply enough additional articles.
No current review findings or severity counts were supplied. The reported GB200 and single-node validation is not independently verified. The objectives report that no GPU time-breakdown lane ran, and that two anomalous e2e repetitions were excluded from reported means.
QA Engineer Review
The change adds two CPU-only tests: tests/unittest/others/test_perf_sanity_warmup_pass.py covers helper logic and pass outcomes; tests/unittest/others/test_perf_sanity_warmup_pass_harness.py covers multi-client planning, warmup-record exclusion, and disaggregated log windows. The supplied test-list search did not find these unit tests in the integration lists. Existing test_perf_sanity.py and test_perf.py integration cases appear in QA lists, and perf-sanity cases also appear in CI lists. No test-list changes are reported. Test execution is not independently verified.
Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The unit tests cover helper and harness paths, but no GPU time-breakdown lane was run. The reported GB200 runs and single-node checks provide additional validation, but do not close that gap.

Description
Perf-sanity measures some JIT compilation inside the measured window. The server's startup warmup cannot reach every prefill shape a benchmark produces: how many prompts arrive together, how they are chunked against max_num_tokens and which decode tokens share a step with them are only known once real traffic arrives. Today a normal aggregated client sends no warmup at all (--no-test-input), and ctx_only / disaggregated e2e clients send a single test request, so the first measured requests pay for those kernels.
This PR adds a warmup pass to the perf-sanity harness (tests/integration/defs/perf/test_perf_sanity.py) and to the single-node perf tests (test_perf.py: QA's single-node lists and the pre-merge l0_perf stage). It changes no library code.
Before each measured client of a normal aggregated, ctx_only or disaggregated e2e test, the harness sends one un-measured wave of the same traffic. The command is the measured client's own benchmark_serving command with:
--num-prompts set to the client's concurrency (one wave);
--seed set to the measured seed + 1, so the pass sends other prompts of the same lengths (other random token ids, or another shuffle of the same dataset file);
--no-test-input added, and the measured client's output-file flags (--save-request-time-breakdown, --save-result, --save-detailed, --result-dir, --result-filename) dropped.
gen_only and gen_only_no_context tests are unchanged: they measure decode only, and the gen server's benchmark fill gate opens once, so warmup requests would open it before the measured burst. AgentX clients (own warmup phase) and accuracy-only clients are skipped too; module-perf tests do not go through this path.
The pass stays out of every uploaded metric:
its output goes to trtllm-benchmark-warmup-pass.<server_idx>.<client_idx>.log and is never parsed;
its perf_metrics records are skipped by the time breakdown through the existing leading-lines mechanism, now shared with the connection warmup and also used on the aggregated path (wait_for_unmeasured_line_counts);
the harness waits for those records before the measured client starts. That wait's census in time_breakdown_metrics.py now sums each server role's files (role classified by content) instead of taking the largest file, because a role writes one file per instance and per frontend process (num_serve_frontends); each file keeps its own leading-line count, and the measured run's shortfall warning uses the same census;
in e2e it runs after the connection warmup and between two clients' gen-worker device-step windows: the previous client's window closes before the pass, and the next one opens after it.
with the time breakdown on, only a server's first measured client gets a pass: the breakdown pools every later record into all of the server's rows, so it could not leave a later pass out. Later clients log a warning and upload l_warmup_pass_requests 0.
Failure handling follows the connection warmup: the test fails if the pass's benchmark_serving exits non-zero, times out or has every request fail; a partial failure only logs a warning.
TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0 (or false / no / off) turns the pass off, e.g. to reproduce a JIT stall in the measured window. CI leaves it on. With jenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py, pass EXTRA_CONTAINER_EXPORTS='TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0'; it reaches the aggregated ranks and every disaggregated role. The same switch controls test_perf.py's pass.
Uploaded rows carry l_warmup_pass_requests (0 when no pass ran). It is not a baseline match key, so existing series continue.
Single-node perf tests (test_perf.py). The same one-wave pass. A wave is the client's concurrency, or min(reqs, maxbs) for a client without a limit, which sends everything at once.
bench cases measure inside the trtllm-bench throughput process that loads the model, so their pass is that command's own --warmup requests, raised to one wave and never below today's value (2, or 2 per GPU on multi-GPU cases). trtllm-bench runs them at the measured concurrency and reports none of them. It draws them from the measured dataset, so a config that enables KV cache block reuse keeps today's warmup (one QA case, a single request).
serve cases send it before each measured client with the client's own benchmark_serving command, as perf-sanity does. A real-text client (the spec-dec models) gets its own prompt file holding the cnn_dailymail articles after the measured ones: the measured file holds exactly the measured prompts, and trtllm-serve reuses KV cache blocks by default. The pass's output goes to benchmark-warmup-pass-*.log in the working directory and is never parsed.
With the switch off, all 212 ids in the QA single-node lists and l0_perf build byte-identical commands to before.
The decision logic, the command derivation and the pass's outcome handling live in a new module, tests/integration/defs/perf/warmup_pass.py, which both harnesses use. README_test_perf_sanity.md and README.md document the pass.
Cost. One wave is about 1 / iterations of the measured run. Estimated from the last 10 days of post-merge results, it adds about 8 % to the summed pytest time of the aggregated and ctx_only tests (median +2 % per test). With the extra wave, every eligible case in the CI test lists keeps at least 13.8 % margin under its TIMEOUT. In test_perf.py, one wave is 2–50 % of most cases' requests, but all of them where a client without a concurrency limit sends no more than maxbs requests: 69 QA bench cases send 512 at maxbs:512, so their benchmark phase doubles, while model loading, usually the longer part of these tests, is unchanged. l0_perf's case adds 512 requests to its 8,192 (+6 %).
Test Coverage
GPU validation on GB200 (oci-hsg), 9 cases: 3 normal aggregated, 3 ctx_only, 3 disaggregated e2e, each with the pass on and off.
Wheel: CI GenPostMergeBuilds 3244 (main 7587cc8e8a). Harness: 7587cc8e8a plus this patch. test_perf_sanity.py is identical at 7587cc8e8a and at this PR's base, so the tested file is byte-identical to this PR's.
Runs go through jenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py, the same launch flow CI uses. Every rep gets its own container and empty JIT cache directories (Triton, FlashInfer, DeepGEMM, CuTe DSL, inductor, CUDA), so an off rep starts as cold as a fresh node.
Both arms of a case run in the same allocation: off/on/on/off in one job where four reps fit in 2 h, otherwise an off/on job plus an on/off job. The DeepSeek-R1 cases need ~40 min of cold startup per rep.
The pass ran in every on rep and in no off rep. It sent one wave per client and every request succeeded. Every rep produced perf values (0 failed reps; reps past a job's time limit were dropped).
Steady state does not move. Median TTFT and median TPOT stay within ±2.4 % between the arms in every case. The +2.2 % median TPOT of e2e 1 comes from its first pair (4.35 → 4.57 ms); the second pair, in the reverse order, measured 4.68 ms on and 4.70 ms off. In this lane median TPOT follows the decode batch, which varied between the pairs (median 80 vs 88 requests per step); CI's high-concurrency e2e lanes vary 4–6 % in median TPOT between builds. e2e 3's P99 TTFT is the maximum of 10 requests (rep-to-rep spread 8–28 %).
Where the off arm started cold, the pass moves the cold start out of the measured window. This happened in Agg 1, Agg 2 and Agg 3's first client. P99 TTFT drops (8.4 s → 0.3 s, 7.4 s → 5.3 s, which is the burst's own queueing, and 3.8 s → 0.3 s), and output throughput rises 1.5–4.8 %. Every other case moves by at most 1.0 %.
The off arm reproduces CI's post-merge values. Agg 1: 1,403 vs CI 1,402.5 tok/s, with the same cold-start tail. ctx_only: within 1 %. Agg 3's 2nd client: within 0.2 %. e2e 1: 17,133 vs CI 17,149. CI's Agg 3 1st-client run measured 1,197 tok/s, i.e. the on level: that run started with warm caches.
Two e2e 2 reps, one per arm, are left out of the means. Both were the second rep of their allocation on the same two nodes (nvl72155-T[07,17]). In both, the gen worker received requests at half the usual rate: median 6 vs 14–15 scheduled per step, the ctx GPU busy 14 % instead of 26 % of the window, and normal step times on both workers. Both measured ~800 tok/s. The same signature in both arms, and normal first reps on the same nodes, place it on those nodes, not on the pass.
GPU check of test_perf.py on GB200 (oci-hsg), in one allocation: wheel 3244 and the repo at 7587cc8e8a with this PR's tests/ tree (test_perf.py, utils.py and pytorch_model_config.py are identical at 7587cc8e8a and at this PR's base). Each case ran with the pass off and then on, on fresh JIT cache directories. pytest ran directly, as in CI's docker stages: under trtllm-llmapi-launch the executor's log lines reach neither the server log nor trtllm-bench's output, so kv_cache_size fails to parse in both arms and a serve case stops before its client.
The serve pass's own request took 294 ms to its first token, the cost the off arm's measured request paid. After the pass, the measured request reached its first token in 91 ms, at the same TPOT. One rep per arm; the bench case moved within run-to-run noise (+0.6 % in an earlier allocation).

Before each measured client of a normal aggregated, ctx_only or
disaggregated e2e perf-sanity test, send one un-measured wave of the
same traffic: the client's own benchmark_serving command with
--num-prompts set to its concurrency, --seed set to the measured seed
plus one and --no-test-input. JIT kernels for the dynamic prefill
shapes then compile before the measured window. gen_only and
gen_only_no_context tests are unchanged.
The pass is excluded from every uploaded metric: its output is not
parsed, its perf_metrics records are skipped by the time breakdown
(shared with the connection warmup), and in e2e it runs before the
gen-worker device-step window. Uploaded rows record the request count
as l_warmup_pass_requests.
TRTLLM_PERF_SANITY_WARMUP_PASS=0 turns it off, e.g. to reproduce a JIT
stall in the measured window.

The CPU tests cover only command construction and helper functions. They do not exercise run_warmup_pass or wait_for_unmeasured_line_counts, so they cannot detect regressions in partial warmup failure, subprocess timeout handling, successful-but-unmeasured request accounting, or settling the JSONL records before time-breakdown aggregation. Add focused mocked tests for the failure and timeout paths, plus a small JSONL test that verifies the settled unmeasured-record count passed to aggregation.

…ows before a pass
Review fixes for the perf-sanity warmup pass:
- time_breakdown_metrics: the census is now the complete records of the
server role that wrote the most, summed over that role's files, instead
of the largest single file. A role writes one file per instance and per
frontend process, so with num_serve_frontends > 1 the warmup records
were split across files and the warmup wait could never reach its count.
Each file keeps its own leading-line count.
- DisaggTestCmds: close the previous client's gen-log window before the
next client's warmup pass, so neither client's device step time counts
the pass's iterations.
- warmup_pass.send_warmup_pass now holds the pass's outcome handling
(non-zero exit, timeout, some or all requests failed), so CPU tests
cover it; the connection warmup shares count_failed_requests.
- Tests: warmup records split across frontend files, roles not summed
together, and the pass's outcomes.

On CodeRabbit's nitpick (lifecycle coverage), addressed in e62da93:
The pass's outcome handling moved into the stdlib warmup_pass.send_warmup_pass. test_perf_sanity_warmup_pass.py now covers success, partial failure, every request failing, a non-zero exit and a timeout.
Settling before aggregation is covered at the wait_for_perf_metrics_files level: warmup records split across frontend files, with a late flush, settle, and their per-file line counts keep them out of compute_time_breakdown_metrics.
wait_for_unmeasured_line_counts is that call plus a raise when it does not settle, and stays in the torch-importing runner.
…perf.py)
test_perf.py (QA's single-node perf tests and l0_perf) now warms each
benchmark up with one un-measured wave of its own traffic, as
perf-sanity does:
- bench: trtllm-bench throughput measures in the process that loads
the model, so its own --warmup is raised to one wave (the
concurrency, or min(reqs, maxbs) without one), never below what it
is today. Those requests come from the measured dataset, so a config
that enables KV cache block reuse keeps today's warmup.
- serve: before each measured client, the harness sends one wave with
the client's benchmark_serving command and other prompts of the same
lengths. A real-text client gets its own prompt file with the
articles after the measured ones.
The pass drops the measured client's result-file flags, so it writes
none of its output files. The switch is renamed to
TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS, since it now controls both harnesses. With
it off, every QA and l0_perf id builds the same commands as before.

The estimate uses one wave per eligible client: concurrency / observed request throughput × stage-allocated GPUs. Applying this to the existing main post-merge workloads in builds #3035 and #3038 gives approximately 6.54 and 6.56 GPU-hours, respectively. The ~6–8 GPU-hour budget allows for additional client startup overhead and runtime variability. The pre-merge estimate comes from recent runs that executed the eligible cases; skipped or reused cases add no warmup work.
The GB300 component is approximately 1.2% of build #3038's 424.7 GB300 GPU-hours. This PR adds no Jenkins stages. Gen-only, AgentX and accuracy-only clients are excluded from the new warmup pass.
These are workload-based estimates, not measurements of complete post-change CI pipelines. The post-merge estimate covers the existing workload and does not yet include the interaction with the additional cases in #21080.

Optionally bound the single-node warmup pass.
If benchmark_serving keeps printing without completing requests, the warmup can run until the enclosing test_perf timeout. The test then fails before the measured client starts. Since that warmup is already failing, a total deadline only makes the bounded failure occur sooner. Add one if reducing wasted test time is useful, but this is not a major workflow blocker.

…the time breakdown is collected
The time breakdown leaves out only the records written before a server's
first measured client, and pools every later record into all of that
server's rows, so a later client's warmup pass would count as measured.
With the breakdown on, warmup_pass_plan now gives the later clients no
pass and logs a warning; the uploaded l_warmup_pass_requests reports the
plan. Without the breakdown, every client keeps its pass.
Adds harness tests that drive AggrTestCmds.run_cmd and
DisaggTestCmds.run_cmd with a fake server and benchmark_serving: two
clients with the breakdown on (warmup records queue 5 s, measured ones
0.1 s, and the pooled ctx_queue mean must stay at the measured value),
two clients without it, and the gen-log windows around a second client's
pass.

…s no articles to spare
A real-text serve client's warmup pass reads the articles after the
measured ones. If the source has fewer than one more wave, building that
file raised and failed the case before the benchmark started. The
shortfall now raises NotEnoughSamplesError (a ValueError), and the pass
catches only that: the client then gets no pass and a warning, as before
the pass existed. Any other dataset error still fails the case.

On CodeRabbit's nitpick (bound the single-node warmup pass with a total deadline): not changed. The pass runs through the same _run_command_with_captured_output as the measured client, with the same bounds (its stall detector and the test timeout), so a pass that hangs fails the test the way a hung client would, before any measurement.

test fails on the previous head, which aborted the benchmark there.

perf-sanity and test_perf.py are themselves test scripts, so the warmup
pass needs no unit tests of its own. The README sections on the pass
are shortened to what a reader needs to run or turn off the pass.

Dropped the unit tests in 42a1c3e: perf-sanity and test_perf.py are themselves test scripts, so the warmup pass needs no unit tests of its own. The GPU runs in the description cover its behavior. The README notes on the pass are also shorter now.
Resource maintenance in LLM/main/L0_Test-x86_64-Single-GPU #4114: L40S-PyTorch-2 is temporarily paused due to Kubernetes agent provisioning and node issues. Affected stages: L40S-PyTorch-2

Dev Engineer Review
The change adds an unmeasured warmup pass to perf-sanity and selected single-node
benchandservetests. It changes test infrastructure, not library code. The pass preserves the client traffic shape, uses a seed offset by one, and records its successful request count asl_warmup_pass_requests.The pass is disabled by
TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0,false,no, oroff.
The change adds two CPU-only tests:
tests/unittest/others/test_perf_sanity_warmup_pass.pycovers helper logic and pass outcomes;tests/unittest/others/test_perf_sanity_warmup_pass_harness.pycovers multi-client planning, warmup-record exclusion, and disaggregated log windows. The supplied test-list search did not find these unit tests in the integration lists. Existingtest_perf_sanity.pyandtest_perf.pyintegration cases appear in QA lists, and perf-sanity cases also appear in CI lists. No test-list changes are reported. Test execution is not independently verified.Coverage verdict: needs follow-up. The unit tests cover helper and harness paths, but no GPU time-breakdown lane was run. The reported GB200 runs and single-node checks provide additional validation, but do not close that gap.

Perf-sanity measures some JIT compilation inside the measured window. The server's startup warmup cannot reach every prefill shape a benchmark produces: how many prompts arrive together, how they are chunked against
max_num_tokensand which decode tokens share a step with them are only known once real traffic arrives. Today a normal aggregated client sends no warmup at all (--no-test-input), andctx_only/ disaggregatede2eclients send a single test request, so the first measured requests pay for those kernels. This PR adds a warmup pass to the perf-sanity harness (
tests/integration/defs/perf/test_perf_sanity.py) and to the single-node perf tests (test_perf.py: QA's single-node lists and the pre-mergel0_perfstage). It changes no library code.ctx_onlyor disaggregatede2etest, the harness sends one un-measured wave of the same traffic. The command is the measured client's ownbenchmark_servingcommand with:--num-promptsset to the client's concurrency (one wave);--seedset to the measured seed + 1, so the pass sends other prompts of the same lengths (other random token ids, or another shuffle of the same dataset file);--no-test-inputadded, and the measured client's output-file flags (--save-request-time-breakdown,--save-result,--save-detailed,--result-dir,--result-filename) dropped.gen_onlyandgen_only_no_contexttests are unchanged: they measure decode only, and the gen server's benchmark fill gate opens once, so warmup requests would open it before the measured burst. AgentX clients (own warmup phase) and accuracy-only clients are skipped too; module-perf tests do not go through this path.trtllm-benchmark-warmup-pass.<server_idx>.<client_idx>.logand is never parsed;wait_for_unmeasured_line_counts);time_breakdown_metrics.pynow sums each server role's files (role classified by content) instead of taking the largest file, because a role writes one file per instance and per frontend process (num_serve_frontends); each file keeps its own leading-line count, and the measured run's shortfall warning uses the same census;l_warmup_pass_requests0.TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0(orfalse/no/off) turns the pass off, e.g. to reproduce a JIT stall in the measured window. CI leaves it on. Withjenkins/scripts/perf/local/submit.py, passEXTRA_CONTAINER_EXPORTS='TRTLLM_PERF_WARMUP_PASS=0'; it reaches the aggregated ranks and every disaggregated role. The same switch controlstest_perf.py's pass.l_warmup_pass_requests(0 when no pass ran). It is not a baseline match key, so existing series continue.Single-node perf tests (
test_perf.py). The same one-wave pass. A wave is the client's concurrency, ormin(reqs, maxbs)for a client without a limit, which sends everything at once.benchcases measure inside thetrtllm-bench throughputprocess that loads the model, so their pass is that command's own--warmuprequests, raised to one wave and never below today's value (2, or 2 per GPU on multi-GPU cases). trtllm-bench runs them at the measured concurrency and reports none of them. It draws them from the measured dataset, so a config that enables KV cache block reuse keeps today's warmup (one QA case, a single request).servecases send it before each measured client with the client's ownbenchmark_servingcommand, as perf-sanity does. A real-text client (the spec-dec models) gets its own prompt file holding the cnn_dailymail articles after the measured ones: the measured file holds exactly the measured prompts, andtrtllm-servereuses KV cache blocks by default. The pass's output goes tobenchmark-warmup-pass-*.login the working directory and is never parsed.l0_perfbuild byte-identical commands to before. The decision logic, the command derivation and the pass's outcome handling live in a new module,
tests/integration/defs/perf/warmup_pass.py, which both harnesses use.README_test_perf_sanity.mdandREADME.mddocument the pass.Cost. One wave is about 1 /
iterationsof the measured run. Estimated from the last 10 days of post-merge results, it adds about 8 % to the summed pytest time of the aggregated andctx_onlytests (median +2 % per test). With the extra wave, every eligible case in the CI test lists keeps at least 13.8 % margin under itsTIMEOUT. Intest_perf.py, one wave is 2–50 % of most cases' requests, but all of them where a client without a concurrency limit sends no more thanmaxbsrequests: 69 QA bench cases send 512 atmaxbs:512, so their benchmark phase doubles, while model loading, usually the longer part of these tests, is unchanged.l0_perf's case adds 512 requests to its 8,192 (+6 %).Test Coverage
