(pre-existing) Is the bool not optional in the proto just because the default is false? What happens if/when the default changes?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes — that's exactly the rule (documented in references/grpc_codegen.md's optional bullet): it's only added when the C++ default differs from the proto3 zero value. detect_infeasibility defaults to false, matching proto3's implicit zero, so an omitting client already gets the right default without presence tracking.
If the default ever flips to true, optional would become required — otherwise an omitting client would silently get false (the wire zero value) instead of the new true default. Worth flagging: nothing currently checks that automatically. description/default in the registry are free text the generator doesn't validate against the C++ initializer (noted in the same doc), so a future default change without a matching optional: true addition would be a silent correctness bug, not a caught one. Filing this as a follow-up for the registry docs rather than fixing here, since it's pre-existing and out of scope for this PR.
**1 of 4** toward a CUDA-free client library (#1802, #1803, #1804 stack on this one). ## Why Talking to a remote `cuopt_grpc_server` currently requires the full GPU stack. `pip install cuopt` pulls `cudf`, `cupy-cuda13x[ctk]`, `rmm`, `pylibraft`, `numba-cuda`, `scipy`, `pandas` and `libcuopt` (which itself pulls `cuda-toolkit`) — GB-scale, onto a machine whose only job is to serialize protobuf over a socket. The motivating consumer is the MCP server in #1701: it imports exactly `Client`, `TlsConfig`, `DataModel`, `Read`, `SolverSettings` — **no `Solve`** — yet installs all of the above. That coupling is mostly accidental. The gRPC client sources are already GPU-free; what ties them to CUDA is that the host-side implementations they need are compiled into `.cu` translation units, so anything wanting them must link the CUDA library. **This PR only separates those**, so #1804 can place them in a `cuopt_client` library whose `NEEDED` list has no CUDA, rmm or raft. ## What Several classes are mostly host code but live entirely in `.cu` files, so anything needing their host-side members has to link the CUDA library. This separates them. | File | Size | CUDA-touching lines | |---|---|---| | `math_optimization/solver_settings.cu` → `.cpp` + `_gpu.cu` | 713 | **5** | | `mip_heuristics/solver_settings.cu` → `.cu` + `.cpp` | 58 | 3 | | `pdlp/solution_conversion.cu` → + `solution_conversion_cpu.cpp` | 225 | 23 | `math_optimization/solver_settings.cu` is the clearest case — 713 lines of parameter handling with 5 lines that touch a stream. ## The rule each split follows Host code moves to the `.cpp`; members taking an `rmm::cuda_stream_view` or returning a `device_uvector` stay in the `.cu`; **every member moved out of the original TU is instantiated explicitly**, because `template class` in the `.cpp` can only emit members whose definitions it can still see. ## Two traps this pattern sets — both hit during development **1. A moved member with no explicit instantiation silently disappears.** An earlier revision of this PR moved the 19-argument `solver_settings_t::set_pdlp_warm_start_data` into `solver_settings_gpu.cu` but instantiated only its five neighbours. The symbol vanished from `libcuopt.so`. It is the overload the Cython layer binds to, so **every `conda-python-tests` config, `docs-build` and `wheel-tests-cuopt-server` failed while every C++ job passed**. There is no compile or link error locally — the C++ build does not use that overload. The check that catches this class of bug in one shot: ```bash nm -D --defined-only libcuopt.so | awk '{print $3}' | sort -u > new.txt comm -23 main.txt new.txt | c++filt # anything here is a lost export ``` **2. Guarded instantiations can compile to nothing.** The instantiations sit behind `MIP_INSTANTIATE_*` / `PDLP_INSTANTIATE_*`, so each new file must include `mip_heuristics/mip_constants.hpp`. Without it the guards evaluate false and the TU compiles to **zero symbols** — no error, just a link failure much later. `nm --defined-only` on the object is how you spot it. ## Risk Moderate, not low — see above. The moved definitions are byte-identical and no build targets change here, so behaviour is unaffected; the risk is entirely in *symbol emission*, which the exported-symbol diff now covers. ## Testing - Full build + all 126 test binaries: 0 errors - Exported symbols diffed against `main`: **no losses** - `ctest`: 119/125. The 6 failures are missing downloaded datasets (`ci/test_cpp.sh` fetches them; I did not locally) — unmodified `main` fails the identical six in a clean worktree. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Authors: - Ramakrishna Prabhu (https://github.com/ramakrishnap-nv) Approvers: - Rajesh Gandham (https://github.com/rg20) - Trevor McKay (https://github.com/tmckayus) URL: #1801

failure it raises.
In `@cpp/src/grpc/codegen/lint_registry_defaults.py`:

secure behavior if files already exist.

Learning: In `cpp/src/grpc/codegen/generate_conversions.py`, `_json_schema_property` deliberately renders each field registry `default` as `Default: <value>.` in the JSON Schema `description`. It must not emit a JSON Schema `default` key because registry defaults can be untyped prose, such as sentinel explanations, and therefore cannot reliably be represented as a typed JSON value.

Learning: In `python/cuopt_mcp/cuopt_mcp/client.py`, the C++ to Cython gRPC error path preserves only a plain message string and does not retain a structured status code. `describe_connection_error()` must redact server-derived filesystem paths from unmatched backend errors instead of converting every unmatched error to a generic message, because solve and parse errors require useful caller-facing diagnostics.

Adds `description:` and `default:` attributes to field_registry.yaml and emits them as leading comments on the generated proto fields. The generated .proto is part of the public wire contract (GRPC_INTERFACE.md, "Custom Clients"), but carried no comments, so a third-party client could not learn what a settings field means or what omitting it does. Covers all 85 fields in pdlp_settings and mip_settings. Two fields (postsolve_info, presolve_absolute_tolerance) have no documentation anywhere, so they carry only `default:` plus a note to add prose later. `default:` values are taken from the C++ member initializers rather than from docs/cuopt/source/*-settings.rst, which disagrees in four places (barrier_iterative_refinement, barrier_step_scale, pdlp_precision, semi_continuous_big_m). Those look like docs bugs and are left for a separate change. Fields without either attribute generate byte-identical output, so the only generated file that changes is cuopt_remote_data.proto, and the change is purely additive comments. The skill had no coverage of cpp/src/grpc/codegen/, so an agent editing a wire field could hand-edit the generated output or skip regeneration. Codegen is an explicit ./build.sh target that never runs during a normal build, so a missed regeneration surfaces only as a CI failure. Adds references/grpc_codegen.md covering the registry workflow, the optional/sentinel presence traps, field-number permanence, and the rule that the C++ member initializer rather than docs/ is ground truth for a setting's default. Adds a safety rule and pointer section in SKILL.md. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Ramakrishna Prabhu <ramakrishnap@nvidia.com>

Addresses review (KyleFromNVIDIA): build a single words list instead of splitting the description, rejoining it, then splitting the combined body again for wrapping -- also removes the inconsistency between checking description with a truthy test and default with `is None`, since both now go through the same words-list construction. Verified: empty description, missing description, and description="" all still correctly produce no comment lines; wrapping/whitespace normalization unchanged. Same fix (46a4f40) -- the workflow already lived in GRPC_CODE_GENERATION.md's Quick start section, so the skill copy was just a redundant agent-only fork of it. Pointed there instead.

Fair -- fixed by deleting it (46a4f40). The registry-specific parts of that bullet (the new optional-vs-zero-value validation check, lint_registry_defaults.py) moved into FIELD_REGISTRY_REFERENCE.md's existing §2.4/§4.3, which already covered proto3 optional semantics properly; no need for a second, more basic explanation.

Why do we need these instructions? The headers of the generated files should be sufficient.

Agreed, removed the whole section in 46a4f40. Confirmed while at it: cuopt_remote_data.proto and every .inc file do carry a DO NOT EDIT / regenerate-with header (I also found and fixed a small drift bug where that header text had been hand-duplicated in two places with different wording -- 8f462b6 -- now both derive from one source).
Addresses review (mlubin, PR review 5235568192): references/grpc_codegen.md duplicated content that already existed in cpp/src/grpc/GRPC_CODE_GENERATION.md and cpp/src/grpc/codegen/FIELD_REGISTRY_REFERENCE.md -- developer-facing docs every contributor reads, not just agents -- and SKILL.md's "Never Hand-Edit Generated Files" section duplicated the "DO NOT EDIT" header every generated file already carries. - Removed references/grpc_codegen.md and both SKILL.md sections pointing at it (the workflow paragraph and the generated-files table, entirely new to this PR, not established content). - Folded the genuinely new material -- description:/default: settings-field docs, the optional-vs-zero-value validation check, and lint_registry_defaults.py -- into FIELD_REGISTRY_REFERENCE.md (as new §2.1 table rows and additions to §4.3) and GRPC_CODE_GENERATION.md's quick start, since neither existed there before this PR. …he .inc HEADER
The "AUTO-GENERATED / DO NOT EDIT" notice was hand-duplicated between
HEADER (.inc files) and generate_data_proto's own literal strings, and
had drifted to different wording ("DO NOT EDIT MANUALLY" vs "DO NOT
EDIT") and different regenerate commands (a bare `python
generate_conversions.py` vs the full path). Both now build from one
_GENERATED_NOTICE tuple, pointing at the documented ./build.sh codegen
entry point instead of a raw script invocation.

comment from AI reviewer:
The last sentence of this description: looks copied from docs/cuopt/source/mip-settings.rst, not from the solver:
Probing is also skipped in deterministic mode and on LP-only solves.
The probing-cache gate in cpp/src/mip_heuristics/diversity/diversity_manager.cu only honors settings.probing (and a constexpr fj_only_run that is false). Deterministic mode skips other work (e.g. early CPUFJ); I don’t see it skipping this probing step.
This PR’s rule is that C++ is ground truth and the rst defaults/prose can drift. Please drop the deterministic-mode claim (keep the presolver=0 part), or point to the code that actually skips probing when determinism_mode is set. Then ./build.sh codegen so the proto comment matches.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Confirmed the AI reviewer's read: traced the only gate on this (diversity_manager.cu:314, settings.probing, plus a constexpr fj_only_run=false that has no dynamic effect) and found nothing checking determinism_mode or an LP-only path there. Dropped the claim in 749851a, kept the presolver=0 part which does hold.

comment from AI reviewer -- changes in this PR make it untrue that the generator does not validate defaults (it does at least somewhat):
This docstring is stale relative to the rest of the PR.
_field_doc_comment still says default: is “not a value the generator derives or validates,” but _validate_registry_uniqueness now fails codegen when a non-optional settings field’s default: isn’t the proto3 zero value.
Please update this docstring to match that: rendered verbatim, not derived from C++, but checked for non-optional settings against the proto3 zero.
Same wording is still in cpp/src/grpc/codegen/lint_registry_defaults.py (module docstring, ~L10–12: “the generator neither derives nor validates”). Align that too so a later reader doesn’t skip the new check.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed both docstrings in 749851a -- _field_doc_comment now describes the actual check (textual match against proto3 zero for non-optional settings fields, not full validation), and lint_registry_defaults.py's module docstring matches. Also fixed a dangling reference there to references/grpc_codegen.md, which no longer exists (deleted earlier today).
…ied probing claim, fix stale docstrings - mip_batch_pdlp_strong_branching / mip_batch_pdlp_reliability_branching: solver_settings.hpp documents these as three-way (0 dual simplex only, 1 cooperative, 2 batched-PDLP-only), but the registry described them as plain booleans. Corrected both descriptions and defaults. - probing: dropped the "skipped in deterministic mode and on LP-only solves" claim -- traced the only gating in diversity_manager.cu (settings.probing, guarded by a constexpr fj_only_run=false) and found no determinism_mode or LP-only check on this path. Looks copied from mip-settings.rst prose rather than the code, which this PR's own rule says is not ground truth. - _field_doc_comment (generate_conversions.py) and lint_registry_defaults.py's module docstring still said the generator "neither derives nor validates" default: -- stale since the optional-vs-zero-value check landed earlier in this PR. Also fixed a dangling reference to the now-deleted references/grpc_codegen.md. Verified: ./build.sh codegen produces the corrected proto comments; ci/verify_grpc_codegen.sh and lint_registry_defaults.py both still pass. left a few comments on consistency found with an AI review, overall looks good to me
… 2 more real gaps Systematically cross-checked every settings field with a numbered/enumerated claim (22 fields) against its actual C++ initializer, comment, or usage site, following the two bugs tmckayus/AI-reviewer found. Two more: - enabled_recombiners: bit 4 was described as "local search", copying the C++ header comment's ambiguous "LS" abbreviation. The actual enum (recombiner_stats.hpp) is LINE_SEGMENT, a specific recombination technique distinct from the solver's general local search (FJ climbers, ls_config_t, etc.) -- described accurately instead. - barrier_dual_initial_point: registry documented 3 of the type's actual 4 values (barrier_dual_initial_point_t in internals.hpp has Automatic, LustigMarstenShanno, DualLeastSquares, SedumiMu) -- added the missing SedumiMu case (2), named per its own comment in barrier.cu. Everything else checked (mip_scaling, reduced_cost_strengthening, ordering, folding/augmented/dualize, symmetry, determinism_mode, presolver x2, reliability_branching, the *_cuts family) matched their C++ source exactly. Verified: ./build.sh codegen regenerates cleanly; ci/verify_grpc_codegen.sh and lint_registry_defaults.py both still pass. Signed-off-by: Ramakrishna Prabhu <ramakrishnap@nvidia.com>

Adds `cuopt_mcp`, an MCP server exposing LP/MILP solves to MCP clients (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) over `cuopt_grpc_server` — no GPU needed on the agent host. Builds on #1701 (merged): the settings catalogue (`cuopt_mcp_schema.json`) is generated from `field_registry.yaml`, so a new solver parameter reaches this server with no MCP-specific work. **Testing:** Unit-tested with a stubbed gRPC client; verified end to end against a live `cuopt_grpc_server` on a GPU. **Docs:** `python/cuopt_mcp/README.md` covers install, config, and the tool list. **Known gaps:** No CI yet (deferred to the CUDA-free packaging split, #1872). Installing this currently pulls in `cuopt-cu13`/CUDA even though the host doesn't need a GPU — same blocker. Authors: - Ramakrishna Prabhu (https://github.com/ramakrishnap-nv) Approvers: - Trevor McKay (https://github.com/tmckayus) - Rajesh Gandham (https://github.com/rg20) URL: #1916
…ow-reuseport Four changes to cuopt_mcp, originally separate commits, squashed here after retargeting this branch onto the newly-split NVIDIA#1916 (cuopt_mcp initial PR) instead of directly on NVIDIA#1701: - cuopt_health: no-arg tool reporting host, port, tls and reachability. Every other tool needs a model or a job_id, so the connection could previously only be checked by submitting work and reading the failure. Probed via a status lookup for an impossible job id, which must return NOT_FOUND (the service has no health RPC). The unreachable message now says to look for a running server before starting one, and cuopt_solve_milp carries its own problem key list rather than pointing at cuopt_solve_lp (a caller can hold the MILP tool alone under deferred loading). - submit()/cuopt_solve_lp/cuopt_solve_milp accept a model as plain JSON arrays (problem=) as an alternative to problem_path, with no file in the loop. - Packaging: cuopt_mcp used plain setuptools, so depends_on_cuopt was emitted as a literal cuopt==26.10.*, which no CUDA-suffixed build publishes; pip install python/cuopt_mcp could not resolve. Now gets the same rapids-build-backend treatment as cuopt_server and builds as cuopt_mcp-cu13, plus a build.sh cuopt_mcp target. - --allow-reuseport: gRPC enables SO_REUSEPORT by default, so a second cuopt_grpc_server on an already-served port binds silently and the kernel splits connections between two processes. The existing "Failed to bind" path never fired. Signed-off-by: Ramakrishna Prabhu <ramakrishnap@nvidia.com>
Adds
description:anddefault:tofield_registry.yamlfor all 85 settings fields acrosspdlp_settings/mip_settings— previously nothing tied a setting's meaning and default to the field itself (constants.his bare#defines,docs/*.rstkeys prose to C API names, not fields).default:values come from the C++ member initializers, not the docs, which disagree in several places. Also adds two checks that were previously missing:
./build.sh codegennow fails if a non-optional settings field'sdefault:doesn't textually match the proto3 zero value — the exact class of bug a reviewer would otherwise have to catch by eye.cpp/src/grpc/codegen/lint_registry_defaults.py— manual, best-effort — diffs simple C++ initializers against the registry to catch drift the check above can't (a changed default with no matching registry update). And
skills/cuopt-developer/references/grpc_codegen.md, covering the codegen pipeline so an agent doesn't hand-editgenerated/or skip regeneration. How this reaches the MCP server
This PR only touches
field_registry.yaml/generate_conversions.py; no MCP code lives here. Butdescription:/default:have a live consumer once #1916 lands on top of this branch:So a
description:/default:edit here reaches an MCP agent's tool schema throughcuopt_mcp_schema.json, with no MCP-specific work needed on that side — which is also why the optional-vs-zero-value check in this PR matters even without cuopt_mcp in view: a wrong default here is a wrong default an agent sees.
