Lets users repeat the notification sound and play their own .wav file
instead of the built-in chime.
New Notification repeat choice (1x-5x) in the tray panel under
Settings > Notifications.
notificationRepeat in config.json (1-10, default 1): how many times the
sound plays in a row. The panel setting writes this value.
notificationSoundPath in config.json (default empty): a .wav file played
instead of the built-in chime. A bare file name is looked up next to config.json; other paths must be absolute.
Defaults keep the current behaviour (built-in chime, played once), so existing
configs are unaffected.
Details
config.rs: two new fields with serde defaults; normalized() clamps the repeat count to 1-10 and trims whitespace/quotes around the path.
service.rs: new set_notification_repeat, saved through the same update_config path as the other notification settings. The two values are added to BridgeSnapshot but marked #[serde(skip)], so GET /v1/status is unchanged and a local file path is not exposed to web origins.
desktop.rs: a Notification repeat combo box (disabled while the notification sound switch is off, like Volume) sends a new SetNotificationRepeat command. The Settings view is already scrollable, so the panel height is unchanged. If a custom sound cannot be used, the reason is shown on the panel's error line.
overlay/chime.rs: the built-in chime can repeat; new WAV reader for custom sounds (PCM 8/16/24/32-bit and 32-bit float, mono or stereo, extra chunks such as LIST skipped). At most the first 10 seconds play per repeat, with a short fade at the cut. Volume applies to custom sounds too.
overlay/mod.rs: Overlay::chime takes the repeat count and sound path. If the file cannot be used (missing, MP3, unsupported encoding), the built-in chime plays instead and the reason is returned.
overlay/linux.rs: the WAV is now written to paplay/aplay from background thread. With longer sounds the previous synchronous write would have blocked the UI thread for as long as the sound plays.
README.md: documents the new settings.
Not included: MP3 support (would need a new decoding dependency) and a file picker for the sound in the panel; the sound file is config-only for now.
Testing
Unit tests for repeat timing and clamping, WAV parsing for all supported formats, cut-off and fade of long files, truncated headers, error messages for unsupported files, the panel's repeat choices, and config default/clamp/round-trip. The failed-config-write integration test also covers set_notification_repeat.
Checked on Linux with real WAV files (mono/stereo, 8/16/24/32-bit, float, ffmpeg output with a LIST chunk) and with MP3, ADPCM, 6-channel and missing files.
CI (fmt, clippy, tests on Linux/macOS/Windows) is green on my fork.
Manually tested on Windows: Notification repeat menu changes the count, Test plays the sound that many times, custom
WAV via notificationSoundPath works.
Not tested on macOS.
AI-assisted: yes (Claude Code)
Note
Add notification repeat count and custom WAV sound file support
Adds notificationRepeatCount (1–10, default 1) and customNotificationSoundPath config settings, normalized in config.rs. Relative paths resolve against the config directory.
Custom WAV loading in chime.rs validates RIFF structure, encoding, channels, sample rate, and bit depth. Playback repeats with a gap, caps each repeat at 10 seconds, and fades the cut. Invalid files fall back to the built-in chime and surface the reason in the tray panel.
The tray settings panel in desktop.rs adds a repeat selector with choices 1–5, plus a 3-second pending window so an incoming snapshot does not overwrite a just-made selection.
Overlay.chime in mod.rs now takes volume, repeat count, and custom path, and Linux Speaker.play writes WAV bytes on a background thread.
Behavioral Change: snapshots in service.rs carry the new fields in memory but omit them from GET /v1/status; the built-in chime now repeats per the configured count instead of playing once.
Customize notification sounds with a WAV file or keep the built-in two-note chime. Supported formats include mono or stereo PCM and 32-bit float WAV files.
Configure notifications to repeat up to 10 times; the tray panel offers settings for up to 5 repeats.
Custom sounds use the notification volume and sound switch. If a custom file can’t be played, the built-in chime plays and the tray panel explains why.
Playback of custom sounds is limited to 10 seconds per repeat, with a fade at the end.

Walkthrough
The change adds notification sound path and repeat settings, custom WAV loading and playback, repeated built-in chimes, and tray controls for repeat count. When custom WAV playback fails, the overlay plays the built-in chime and returns the failure reason for display in the tray panel.

Summary
Notification sound settings and persistence src/config.rs, src/service.rs, tests/backend_local_profiles.rs
Configuration adds a custom sound path and repeat count with defaults and normalization. Service snapshots include both settings, and repeat-count updates persist through the service.
WAV generation and playback src/overlay/chime.rs, src/overlay/mod.rs, src/overlay/linux.rs
Built-in chimes support repeats. Custom WAV playback resolves paths, validates and converts supported formats, applies volume, limits each play to ten seconds, and falls back to the built-in chime on failure. Linux playback writes audio on a background thread.
Tray controls and playback wiring src/desktop.rs, README.md
The tray panel offers repeat counts from 1–5 and sends changes to the service. Notification playback passes the configured sound path and repeat count to the overlay. The README documents the settings and WAV behavior.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds configurable notification repeats and custom WAV sounds while preserving existing defaults. An unresolved concern remains: reading custom files on the GUI thread can freeze the tray when a mounted drive stalls; asynchronous loading or explicit acceptance of that risk needs human judgment.

Cache the synthesized chime or move synthesis off the UI thread.
With notificationRepeat at 10, chime::wav runs on the UI thread and blocks it until synthesis finishes. Cache the WAV bytes per (volume, repeats), or synthesize on a worker thread.

Update chime::wav to reuse cached WAV bytes keyed by (volume, repeats), so
repeated calls avoid running the sample synthesis loop on the UI thread.
Add a success-path test for set_notification_repeat.
The only test reference to set_notification_repeat is the failed write at line 544. That assertion runs inside failed_config_writes_preserve_all_in_memory_preferences, which uses server(true). No test calls the setter on a writable config, and no test checks the saved notificationRepeat value after the write. A change that drops the assignment in the setter, or stops saving it, would still pass the suite. The config unit test parses and serializes notificationRepeat but does not call the setter, so it cannot detect this loss.
Add a test that sets a repeat count on a writable config, then checks the saved notificationRepeat value. This covers the persistence path used by the tray panel's repeat control.

Add a test that places a metadata chunk before fmt .
riff() writes the optional LIST chunk only after the fmt body, and no test places an extra chunk before fmt . The parser skips a non-required chunk that appears before fmt , but the suite does not exercise that order. A change that required fmt to come first would still pass the current tests.
Add an option to the fixture that places the extra chunk before fmt . Assert the same decoded output as stereo_files_with_extra_chunks_keep_both_channels.

Update the `riff()` test fixture to optionally place the extra `LIST` chunk
before the `fmt ` chunk, then add a test asserting that this ordering produces
the same decoded output as `stereo_files_with_extra_chunks_keep_both_channels`.
Add a test that exercises the repeat selector's send path.
the_panel_offers_one_to_five_repeats_within_the_config_limit checks NOTIFICATION_REPEATS and its bounds only. The notification-repeat selector sends BridgeCommand::SetNotificationRepeat inline, inside its combo box closure. No test runs that closure. Removing the send_command call would leave the test suite passing. The backend setter has direct coverage in tests/backend_local_profiles.rs, but the selection-to-command link does not.
A helper that maps a choice to a command would not catch this regression, because the selector would still skip the helper. The test must run the selector and assert the command it sends. This needs a way to render the panel and observe the sent command. The repository has no UI test harness, so this adds test infrastructure.

Stop trimming the configured sound filename.
On Linux, a filename can end in a space. The value is trimmed in two places before File::open receives it. Changing only normalized() does not fix the problem, because resolve_sound_path trims the value again. Remove the whitespace trimming at both places. Keep the quote removal, because the documented quoted form depends on it.
Surrounding whitespace then becomes part of the file name. A value with a leading or trailing space must match the file name exactly. If it does not match, the built-in chime plays and the panel reports the reason.

Log and stop the player when the chime writer thread fails to start.

Read custom notification sounds off the GUI thread.
Overlay::chime opens and reads a custom WAV file on the GUI thread. A stalled mounted drive blocks refresh_overlay, and the tray panel stops responding until the read returns. Read and decode the file on a worker thread, then send the result back over a channel.
Suggested direction
Keep the custom_wav call off the refresh_overlay path. Start the read on a worker thread when the notice arrives. Play the chime when the worker returns the bytes or an error.

OverlayHandle::chime falls back only when the custom WAV cannot be read or decoded. A speaker.play error propagates, and TrayApp::present only logs it, so no sound plays. On Windows, waveOutOpen can reject a format that parse_encoding accepts. Retry playback with chime::wav(volume, repeats) when the custom sound fails, and report the error as the notice problem.

Update OverlayHandle::chime to distinguish a custom WAV from the built-in chime
and retry playback with chime::wav(volume, repeats) if playing the custom WAV
fails. Route the resulting playback error through the notice problem path in
TrayApp::present rather than only logging it.

Show the custom sound warning even after a successful command.

Show the custom sound warning even after a successful command.
send_command clears last_error after any successful send. The custom-sound warning is stored in last_error and in sound_problem, but the panel renders only last_error. After an unrelated command, the reason the custom sound is not used disappears from the panel. Render sound_problem on the home view while it is set.

Review comment at @src/desktop.rs around lines 902 - 903:
Update the home view’s warning rendering to show sound_problem whenever it is
set, independently of last_error, so a successful send_command does not hide the
custom-sound warning.

Qualify the README notification fallback for the case with no banner.
When the banner cannot be created, TrayApp::present shows a system notification and never reads the custom .wav. The built-in chime and the tray-panel reason do not occur, so the README sentence is inaccurate for that case.

Update the README notification fallback description to distinguish banner
playback from the no-banner case: when TrayApp::present uses a system
notification, clarify that the custom .wav is not read and neither the built-in
chime nor tray-panel reason is shown.

Summary
Lets users repeat the notification sound and play their own
.wavfileinstead of the built-in chime.
Settings > Notifications.
notificationRepeatinconfig.json(1-10, default 1): how many times thesound plays in a row. The panel setting writes this value.
notificationSoundPathinconfig.json(default empty): a.wavfile playedinstead of the built-in chime. A bare file name is looked up next to
config.json; other paths must be absolute.Defaults keep the current behaviour (built-in chime, played once), so existing
configs are unaffected.
Details
config.rs: two new fields with serde defaults;normalized()clamps the repeat count to 1-10 and trims whitespace/quotes around the path.service.rs: newset_notification_repeat, saved through the sameupdate_configpath as the other notification settings. The two values are added toBridgeSnapshotbut marked#[serde(skip)], soGET /v1/statusis unchanged and a local file path is not exposed to web origins.desktop.rs: a Notification repeat combo box (disabled while the notification sound switch is off, like Volume) sends a newSetNotificationRepeatcommand. The Settings view is already scrollable, so the panel height is unchanged. If a custom sound cannot be used, the reason is shown on the panel's error line.overlay/chime.rs: the built-in chime can repeat; new WAV reader for custom sounds (PCM 8/16/24/32-bit and 32-bit float, mono or stereo, extra chunks such asLISTskipped). At most the first 10 seconds play per repeat, with a short fade at the cut. Volume applies to custom sounds too.overlay/mod.rs:Overlay::chimetakes the repeat count and sound path. If the file cannot be used (missing, MP3, unsupported encoding), the built-in chime plays instead and the reason is returned.overlay/linux.rs: the WAV is now written topaplay/aplayfrom background thread. With longer sounds the previous synchronous write would have blocked the UI thread for as long as the sound plays.README.md: documents the new settings. Not included: MP3 support (would need a new decoding dependency) and a file picker for the sound in the panel; the sound file is config-only for now.
Testing
set_notification_repeat.LISTchunk) and with MP3, ADPCM, 6-channel and missing files.WAV via notificationSoundPath works.

Note
Add notification repeat count and custom WAV sound file support
notificationRepeatCount(1–10, default 1) andcustomNotificationSoundPathconfig settings, normalized in config.rs. Relative paths resolve against the config directory.Overlay.chimein mod.rs now takes volume, repeat count, and custom path, and LinuxSpeaker.playwrites WAV bytes on a background thread.GET /v1/status; the built-in chime now repeats per the configured count instead of playing once.Macroscope summarized dcb67df.
