# Getting started with Samtendo Network on 3DS

Before starting this guide, we need to check if custom firmware (CFW) is already installed on your console, alongside other potentially conflicting applications.

### Section I - CFW Check

1. Power off your 3DS
1. Ensure the SD Card is inserted into your console
1. While holding SELECT, press POWER.
1. You should see the Luma3DS menu.

::: warning

If you do not see the Luma3DS menu or you see another CFW's menu, **STOP** - you do not have Luma3DS installed. Continue from [here](https://3ds.hacks.guide) and return once you have finished.

:::

::: warning

If your Luma3DS version is not the latest (v13.4), you should update it now to prevent any issues. Do so [here](https://3ds.hacks.guide/checking-for-cfw.html#what-to-do-next).

:::

### Section II - Version Check

1. Launch System Settings
1. Look at the top screen. In the bottom right, you will see your console's version (e.g. Sys 11.17.0-50E).

Your console's version should be **11.17.0-50X**, with X being either C, E, J, K, T or U depending on your region. If not, you should update your console before continuing.

If all is good, you're ready to continue!

# SD Preparation

Power off your 3DS and remove the SD Card. Insert it into your computer, phone or other device that can read SD Cards.

## Conflicting files

::: warning

While there are safety measures in place to prevent any conflicts, we can never 100% guarantee that other services will prevent them. We recommend only having Cirrus (Samtendo Network's switcher) installed at the same time.

::: danger

Before beginning the guide, you must know the risks of Wii U hacking: **EVERY** time you modify your system, there is always the potential for an **UNRECOVERABLE** brick. Bricks are rare but still a possibility... so make sure you follow **ALL** directions **EXACTLY!**
By modding your console, you subject it to the remote (but non-zero) possibility of the console being bricked (rendered non-functional). Incorrect file placement will NOT brick your console, but purposely skipping instructions might.

**In short:** Modding your console is safe, but it's your responsibility if something goes wrong.

This guide will work on all Wii U consoles in all regions on the latest firmware (5.5.6 for North American consoles, 5.5.5 for all other regions) or below.
