  • Pushes should reach consumers within a notification, not a sweep interval, without adding an HTTP listener to a process that otherwise talks only NATS.
  • The periodic sweep stays as the backstop, and finding work there is a signal that notifications are not flowing.

PR Summary

Medium Risk
Adds new NATS ingress (notifications and catch-up RPC) on the event publishing path; behavior is mostly delegated to existing catch-up logic but misconfigured notify subjects or overload could delay publishes until the sweep runs.

Overview
The NATS JetStream publisher can be woken without HTTP: bucket notifications on the configured notify subject (S3, GCS, {"key":…}, or {"repo":…}) trigger catch_up, with a periodic sweep still acting as the backstop.

A new $SRV microservice (walgit-events) exposes <prefix>.events.catch-up for on-demand catch-up reports, standard PING/INFO/STATS (stats include publisher counters), 503 when more than 64 catch-ups are pending, and a refused counter on overload.

Integration tests cover notify + service paths, invalid notifications, NATS restarts, sweep-only discovery, and operator freshness_ttl behavior with wake-ups.

Walkthrough

The crate adds NATS notification and periodic-sweep loops for repository catch-up. It also adds a NATS service endpoint for catch-up requests and publisher statistics. Integration tests cover request responses, notification handling, sweeps, and NATS restarts.

Changes

NATS catch-up

Layer / File(s) Summary
Notification and sweep catch-up
crates/walgit-nats/Cargo.toml, crates/walgit-nats/src/lib.rs, crates/walgit-nats/src/wake.rs, crates/walgit-nats/tests/jetstream.rs
The crate parses supported notifications, resolves distinct repositories under the configured store prefix, and runs catch-up for named repositories. It also runs a startup sweep and periodic sweeps. Tests cover notification filtering, recovery, and freshness TTL behavior.
NATS catch-up service
crates/walgit-nats/src/lib.rs, crates/walgit-nats/src/service.rs, crates/walgit-nats/tests/jetstream.rs
The service registers a queue-group catch-up endpoint, returns status codes and serialized reports, and exposes publisher counters. Tests cover request errors, service stats, and behavior after a NATS restart.

The NATS catch-up endpoint accepts an unbounded number of queued requests, which can use memory and delay push notifications during a burst. The new integration tests can also fail intermittently on slow machines because they wait a fixed time instead of waiting for readiness. Bound outstanding requests and replace the sleeps before merging.

A rabbit hears the NATS bell ring,
And hops to catch-up, message by string.
The sweep finds work that slipped away,
While service counters count the day.
Then streams stay bright when servers sway.

tokio::spawn, rather than spawning an unbounded task for every request; reject
excess requests explicitly while preserving the existing Publisher::catch_up
behavior for admitted work.

Review comments at @crates/walgit-nats/tests/jetstream.rs:
- Line 429: Replace the fixed sleeps in the JetStream and service tests with
explicit readiness signals: have notify_loop signal after subscribing and
service endpoints signal after registration, then await each signal with a
timeout before sending the first notification or request.
