Cubby

A lightweight pop-out media controller for Windows. Simply glide your mouse to the top-center of the screen and a Dynamic Island inspired panel will pop down, featuring a dynamic artwork-themed gradient progress bar, transport controls and click-to-seek. Move the mouse away and it slides back out of sight.

Features

  • ~429KB, fully self contained. Idles around 25MB of RAM with a focus on being lightweight. No Electron, no logins, no manual configuration aside from start on boot.
  • Cubby uses the same mechanism behind Windows' native media controls, so it works with any app that publishes now playing info, including but not limited to: Spotify, YouTube/Twitch in a browser, Apple Music, VLC, foobar2000, you get the idea.
  • Click the media title or artwork to immediately bring the currently playing application into focus
  • Dynamic album artwork derived progress bar and now playing visualizer (only visual)
  • The window never steals focus so clicking play/pause won't yank you out of whatever you're doing.
  • Autostart available by right-clicking the tray icon and toggling "Open on Startup". It takes effect at next login, and if you move the exe later, Cubby will fix the registered path on the next app launch.
  • Spotify pushes position updates to SMTC on state changes (play/pause/seek/track change), so the app interpolates the playhead locally between updates. It's accurate within a fraction of a second.

How to Run

  • Navigate to the releases page, Extract the ZIP somewhere safe and launch Cubby.exe. It will park itself in your system tray, and you can move your mouse to the top center of your screen to access the media controls.

  • Cubby is also available on the Microsoft Store
