Route data often contains large sections of overlapping lines so that all but one line are obscured in these sections. Offsetting these sections of data is desirable so that all lines are visible. However in many cases, deciding how to offset the various lines to minimise unecessary crossing and unecessary gaps between lines is a complex problem.
