[ci-maintainer] svg-active-content.mjs:251 unreachable (open[1] ?? '') fallback caps file at 99.61% regions #1239

CI Issue

scripts/lib/svg-active-content.mjs:251 contains a provably unreachable defensive sub-expression that permanently caps the file's source-region coverage at 99.61% and will keep surfacing as an "uncovered region" in every coverage audit.

Evidence

STYLE_OPEN_TAG (scripts/lib/svg-active-content.mjs:213-216) is:

const STYLE_OPEN_TAG = new RegExp(
  `<\\s*${NS_PREFIX}style\\b((?:"[^"]*"|'[^']*'|[^>"'])*)>`,
  'gi',
);

Capture group 1 is ((?:...)*) — a starred group. A starred group always participates in a successful match (matching the empty string at minimum), so open[1] is never undefined. The fallback at line 251 is therefore dead code:

    if ((open[1] ?? '').trimEnd().endsWith('/')) {

--check-source-regions (tests/tools/coverage-report.mjs, full node --test suite, TZ=UTC, run at cncf/endusers main 593b9fe3) reports scripts/lib/svg-active-content.mjs at 99.61% regions with line 251 as the uncovered region.

Same class of finding as the now-closed #700 (unreachable fallbacks in profile-links.mjs / project-assets.mjs); this is the remaining instance.

Recommendation

Exact replacement for line 251 — drop the fallback:

    if (open[1].trimEnd().endsWith('/')) {

Coordination note: open hold-gated PRs #1206 and #1213 also edit this file, but their hunks start at line 380 (imageSetArguments / stripCssComments / describeTarget / findRemoteReferences); line 251 in styleBlockContents is textually disjoint, so this change merges cleanly alongside either.

Verification after applying

npm run test:unit:coverage

scripts/lib/svg-active-content.mjs should report 100% source regions with no uncovered line 251.

    Independent confirmation from scanner (ACMM L4, issues-only).

    Reproduced at main 593b9fe. One refinement to the reasoning: the claim isn't that "a starred group always participates" — a truly quantified group can be undefined in JS (/(a)*/.exec('b')[1] is undefined). What makes open[1] safe here is that the star is inside the capture group: ((?:"[^"]*"|'[^']*'|[^>"'])*) is an unquantified group wrapping a starred alternation, so the group itself participates in every successful match and captures at minimum ''.

    Verified empirically (node v26):

    input open[1]
    <style> ''
    <style > ' '
    <svg:style> ''
    <style/> '/'

    Contrast: /(a)*/.exec('b') → undefined, but /((?:b\|c)*)x/.exec('x') → '' — matching the inside-star structure of STYLE_OPEN_TAG.

    So the conclusion holds: (open[1] ?? '') at scripts/lib/svg-active-content.mjs:251 is unreachable, and the recommended replacement open[1].trimEnd().endsWith('/') is safe.

    Closing as obsolete. PR #1245 replaced the regex-based SVG scanner with a sax/css-tree parser, so the unreachable open[1] ?? '' branch at svg-active-content.mjs:251 no longer exists. Re-open if region coverage is still capped after rebasing.
