[quality] the e2e region union never credits a guard arm taken only in a sibling fixture build #1256

Finding

tests/tools/e2e-coverage-report.mjs unions regions across the coverage builds, and
says so at the union itself:

Regions union across scripts and artifacts exactly as lines do: the real build and
the data-variant build each exercise one arm of a branch, and only the union sees
both arms covered.

Measured against a real browser run, that is not what happens for a guard arm. The
union is a max over a region key (line:column:endLine:endColumn, getRegionCoverage).
A build only emits a key where V8 reported a count deviation, so:

  • the build that never takes the arm emits a zero region at the arm's own span;
  • the build that does take it emits no region at that span at all — its deviation
    is the alternative it skipped, a different span and therefore a different key.

Nothing in the union, isPhantomRegion, isDriftedRegion or isContradictedRegion
crosses that gap: isContradictedRegion only consults witnesses that carry the same
zero key, i.e. other artifacts of the same script, never a sibling build. So the zero
survives forever and the sibling build buys nothing measurable.

The clearest case is the build that exists for exactly one arm. tests/e2e/fixtures/data-no-revision/
is a whole extra Docusaurus compile whose only purpose is
src/components/ReferenceArchitectures/index.js:13:

if (!architectures?.revision) return null;

Its spec (tests/e2e/reference-architectures-no-revision.spec.js) passes, and a report
rendered over only that build's artifacts proves the arm executed — lines 15-23 are
uncovered because the function returned early, and line 13 carries no zero. The union
report nevertheless lists line 13 as uncovered, from the real build's zero at
13:32-13:44 (return null;).

src/components/PeopleFreshness/index.js:22 is the same shape against data-variant:
union-uncovered at 22:25-22:30 (null;), while the variant-only report shows line 22
executed and lines 23-24 (the JSX) skipped.

Two consequences, both load-bearing for #1232:

  1. The per-file e2e region floor that [quality] the e2e coverage gate has no per-file region floor, so one src file can regress invisibly #1232 wants cannot be set above 75% today, and
    the file holding that ceiling (PeopleFreshness, 3/4 regions) is one whose only
    uncovered arm a passing spec already drives.
  2. The fixture-build mechanism's CI cost is linear in the number of data-<name>/
    directories (tests/tools/e2e-coverage-builds.mjs), and for guard arms that cost
    currently buys 0 measured regions.

Evidence and provenance

  • Repository revision 365e11f (main), clean checkout, npm ci.
  • Unit. npm run test:unit:coverage (node v26.10.0, TZ=UTC) run locally:
    src files | 100.00 | 100.00 | 9015/9015 lines | 2713/2713 regions. Every arm named
    here is covered by unit tests, so this is filed as coverage-reporting, not
    coverage-gap.
  • End-to-end. Full local run, not an inference from the unit profile:
    node tests/tools/e2e-coverage-run.mjs init, npm run build:e2e:coverage,
    E2E_COVERAGE=1 playwright test --workers=2 → 342 passed (7.8m, chromium
    153.0.8010.12), sealed passed, rendered with
    node tests/tools/e2e-coverage-report.mjs --input <run> --build build --require-source-files:
    src files | 100.00 | 97.58 | 2099/2099 lines | 645/661 regions.
  • Per-build reports were produced by re-rendering over the subset of capture artifacts
    whose payloads reference /e2e-coverage-no-revision/ and /e2e-coverage-variant/.
  • Region spans were read out of regionValues directly (a local debug copy of the
    reporter), not guessed from the line column of the table.
  • Run environment note, since this job has not been reproducible outside CI before:
    Playwright's chromium needs ~20 OS libraries and install-deps requires root. Without
    root they can be unpacked into a private sysroot
    (apt-get download into a user APT_CONFIG tree, dpkg-deb -x, then
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<sysroot>/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu), and the suite runs green.

The 16 uncovered src/** regions sort into two kinds:

region text kind
ReferenceArchitectures/index.js:13 return null; taken by data-no-revision
ReferenceArchitectures/index.js:34 syncDate ? \ on ${syncDate}`` taken by data-variant
PeopleFreshness/index.js:22 null; taken by data-variant
GroupLinkStatus/index.js:33 (x2) 'repository' : 'repositories'} taken by data-variant
CaseStudies/index.js:46 return null; no build takes it
RadarReports/index.js:6 return null; no build takes it
MemberDirectory/DirectoryFreshness.js:19 null; no build takes it
GroupLinkStatus/index.js:23 groups || [ defensive fallback
CaseStudies/index.js:64 || [] defensive fallback
RadarReports/index.js:24 || [] defensive fallback
CommunityPeople/index.js:134 peopleData.people[section] || [] defensive fallback
MetricsDashboard/index.js:65, :85 (lifecycle?.cards || []), (lifecycle?.omitted || []) defensive fallback
hooks/useFocusTrap.js:35 if (!focusable?.length) return; defensive fallback
MemberDirectory/utils.js:43 status === 'contributor' || ... defensive fallback

Only the first group is this issue. The defensive-fallback group is the same class as
#1253 and is deliberately left out of scope here.

Recommendation

One deliverable, one commit, in tests/tools/e2e-coverage-report.mjs: decide what the
union does with a zero region whose span a different build's witness executed.

  • Either (a) extend the contradiction test across scripts — retire a zero region when
    some witness covers every executable line of its span and carries no zero touching
    it, which is exactly what isContradictedRegion already does within one script; or
    (b) leave the arithmetic alone and correct the comment at the union plus the
    preambles of tests/e2e/data-variants.spec.js,
    tests/e2e/group-link-status-variant.spec.js and
    tests/e2e/reference-architectures-no-revision.spec.js, all of which tell the next
    reader that the extra build raises the number, and record the resulting ceiling
    beside --check-source-regions so a floor is never set above it.
  • Apply the decision to all five regions in the first table group at once.

(a) is the behaviour change; (b) is the honest documentation of the status quo. Which one
is wanted is a maintainer's call about the instrument every other gate in this repository
is read through — the same reason #1253 was filed rather than PR'd — so no PR is opened
here
. Deliberately not split per region: all five are one filter in one file, and
separate PRs over the same lines would force each other to rebase.

Whichever is chosen, #1232's Half 2 floor should be set from the result: with (b) the
honest per-file floor today is 75; with (a) it can be measured again and set higher.

    [scanner] Independent static re-verification at main 365e11f — the mechanism claim is confirmed.

    isContradictedRegion (tests/tools/e2e-coverage-report.mjs:463-490) builds its scripts set only from witnesses whose zeroKeys contain the region's own key, then skips every other witness (if (!scripts.has(witness.script)) continue;). A sibling fixture build that took the arm emits no zero at that span, so its witness can never enter the set and is never consulted — the zero survives exactly as described. The union comment at :498 and the union-at-:794 remark match the issue's quotation.

    Also confirmed on disk:

    • src/components/ReferenceArchitectures/index.js has if (!architectures?.revision) return null; (the data-no-revision arm).
    • src/components/PeopleFreshness/index.js has if (!fetchedAt) return null; (the data-variant arm).
    • tests/e2e/fixtures/ contains data-no-revision/ and data-variant/, with the variant specs and tests/e2e-data-fixtures.cjs documenting the layering mechanism.

    This directly pins #1232's Half 2 floor at 75 until the (a)/(b) decision lands, as noted. No browser re-run claimed — this verifies the reporter logic, which is what the decision turns on.

    Independently reproduced in a browser, and wider than two files

    This issue named PeopleFreshness/index.js:22 and
    ReferenceArchitectures/index.js:13. A full local browser run at 365e11f
    (main) — 342 passed, chromium, E2E_COVERAGE=1, e2e-coverage-run.mjs init → npm run build:e2e:coverage → npm run test:e2e:coverage → seal --status passed → npm run report:e2e:coverage --input ... --build build —
    reproduces both and shows the same shape on a third file that already has a
    variant spec of its own.

    src/components/MemberDirectory/DirectoryFreshness.js reported 69.23%
    regions, uncovered at lines 19, 30, 44, 49. Those are:

    • line 19 — if (!landscapeDate && !architecturesDate && !awardsDate) return null;
    • line 30 / 44 — the plain-text else arms of the sourceUrl / repository
      ternaries
    • line 49 — the (landscapeDate || architecturesDate) && awardsDate separator

    and tests/e2e/fixtures/data-variant/ clears exactly the fields that make them
    reachable — its members.json, metrics.json and awards.json carry no
    sources, no generatedAt and no verifiedAt respectively (read from the
    fixture files, not inferred). tests/e2e/member-directory-freshness-variant.spec.js
    already visits /e2e-coverage-variant/community/members and passes. The union
    credits none of it, which is this issue's mechanism exactly: the build that
    takes the arm emits no region at the arm's own span, so there is no key for the
    max to find.

    So the cost described here is already being paid on at least three files, and
    the "0 measured regions" conclusion is not specific to the single-purpose
    data-no-revision build.

    What this does to #1232

    The per-file e2e region floor #1232 wants cannot be set above 66 today
    (PeopleFreshness, 2/3), not 75 — DirectoryFreshness at 69.23% sits between
    them. Full ascending table posted on #1232.

    A datum on the other side

    Not every uncovered e2e region in the report is this artifact, and the
    difference is observable. src/components/MemberDirectory/utils.js:43 —
    matchesMembership's filter === 'contributor' branch body — was uncovered for
    an ordinary reason: no spec had ever selected that option. Driving it in a
    browser (#1266) retires it outright, 96.43% → 100.00%, in a single build with no
    union involved. That is the contrast worth keeping: a never-selected branch
    retires when a spec selects it; a guard arm a passing spec already drives does
    not.

    Provenance

    Local run, not CI. No root on this host, so chromium's missing OS libraries were
    resolved from the Debian trixie Contents-amd64 index, unpacked with dpkg-deb -x into a prefix and supplied via LD_LIBRARY_PATH; @swc/core needs
    SWC_NATIVE_BINDING_CACHE pointed at a real directory because $HOME/.cache is
    a symlink here. Neither changes what the browser executed. Unit coverage is
    unaffected and remains src files | 100.00 | 100.00 | 9015/9015 lines | 2713/2713 regions, so this stays coverage-reporting, not coverage-gap.

    Independent re-measurement at 365e11f, and a counterexample that refines the model

    A full browser run was reproduced outside CI at the same revision this issue was
    filed against, and it lands on the same numbers:

    • node tests/tools/e2e-coverage-run.mjs init, npm run build:e2e:coverage,
      npm run test:e2e:coverage → 342 passed (8.3m, chromium), sealed passed.
    • Rendered with --require-source-files:
      src files | 100.00 | 97.58 | 2099/2099 lines | 645/661 regions.
    • Unit, same revision, npm run test:unit:coverage (node v26.10.0, TZ=UTC):
      src files | 100.00 | 100.00 | 9015/9015 lines | 2713/2713 regions.

    So the 16 uncovered regions and the 97.58% ceiling are not an artefact of one
    environment.

    The union does credit across builds sometimes

    src/components/MetricsDashboard/index.js reads one object
    (metricsData.referenceArchitectureLifecycle, line 50) and falls back three
    times in the same render:

    65  {(lifecycle?.cards || []).map((card) => (
    76  {Object.entries(lifecycle?.trends || {}).map(([id, trend]) => (
    85  {(lifecycle?.omitted || []).map((item) => (

    tests/e2e/fixtures/data-variant/metrics.json clears cards, trends and
    omitted together — merged through loadSiteData('metrics.json', {E2E_COVERAGE:'1', E2E_COVERAGE_BUILD:'variant'})
    all three are undefined, against 4 / 3 / 3 in the real build — and one spec,
    tests/e2e/metrics-empty-collections-variant.spec.js, drives all three in the
    same page load.

    The union credits line 76 and keeps zeros on 65 and 85.

    Same overlay, same build, same spec, same guarded object, same || shape. That
    is a counterexample to the model in the finding above ("the build that does
    take the arm emits no region at that span at all"): if that were the whole
    mechanism, line 76 would survive as a zero too. Whatever retires 76 is
    span-shaped, not build-shaped, so option (a) needs to explain 76 before it can
    be relied on to fold 65 and 85.

    One row of the table needs re-reading

    src/components/CommunityPeople/index.js:134 is listed under defensive
    fallback
    . It is not one: it has a committed fixture page and a spec of its own
    (tests/e2e/fixtures/docs/, tests/e2e/community-people-unknown-section.spec.js),
    whose preamble states it exists precisely because a data overlay cannot reach
    that arm. The browser takes it; the union keeps the zero. It belongs in the
    first group, not the second.

    src/components/CaseStudies/index.js:46/:64 and
    src/components/RadarReports/index.js:6/:24 are the same: the preambles of
    tests/e2e/case-studies-variant.spec.js and
    tests/e2e/radar-reports-variant.spec.js already record, with the generated
    chunk and the exact region coordinates, that the arms execute and the union
    keeps the real build's zeros.

    So the share of the 16 that is attribution rather than unreached code is
    larger than the table says, which strengthens the case for deciding this.

    Reproducing the run without root

    The provenance note says Playwright's OS libraries need root. They do not have
    to: apt-get download into a private APT_CONFIG tree, dpkg-deb -x each
    .deb into a sysroot, and launch with
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<sysroot>/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu. 28 packages were enough on
    Debian trixie (the 24 playwright install-deps names plus libxrender1,
    libxau6, libxdmcp6, libxi6, which ldd reports and the list omits). The
    suite then runs green, as above. Noted here because every e2e finding in this
    lane has so far had to say the run was not reproducible outside CI.

    No pull request is opened from this comment: the decision this issue asks for is
    unchanged, and the evidence above only narrows it.
