Week 1: Introduction to Compilers

Students will be introduced to the concept of language translation. Compilers, Interpreters and the theory and techniques in the compilation process will be introduced. Intermediate experience with one or more programming languages is essential.

Learning Objectives

After completing the material for the week, students should be able to:

  • Define a compiler and more generally language translators, their role and relevance in the development of Computer Science
  • Distinguish between compilers and interpreters
  • Give a detailed explanation of the processes involved in each of the phases of the compilation process
  • Clearly state and describe at least one compiler construction tool for each of the phases and their uses
