Closes #533

What

  • Move to dbkit/sqlite 0.3.0, which brings modernc.org/sqlite 1.61.0, modernc.org/libc 1.79.0 and Go 1.27.3.
  • GOPHENBERG_SQLITE_BUSY_POLL now only paces opening a new connection. Every other wait for a lock tries again on SQLite's own schedule, which slows down to one try every 100ms. The docs, .env.example and the settings code now say so.
  • The busy poll test now checks a first connection to a new file, the one wait the setting still paces.
  • golang.org/x/exp moves too. libc 1.79.0 needs golang.org/x/tools 0.52.0, which turns off the export data call the pinned apidiff made, so the SDK compatibility check failed until x/exp took an apidiff that uses the supported call.
  • The note for the next release is corrected before it ships. It says the busy poll only paces opening, and names the two steps that still wait up to the busy timeout after Ctrl-C: storing an account command's record and saving what update:check found. Building from source needs Go 1.27.3.

Why

dbkit/sqlite 0.3.0 leaves the lock wait to the SQLite driver, which now ends the wait with the call's context, and drops dbkit's own busy handler. The driver release alone does not work on dbkit/sqlite 0.2.0, so the move comes through dbkit.

Testing

  • make cover GOTESTFLAGS=-race and make cover-sqlite GOTESTFLAGS=-race: every package passes, coverage 100%.
  • The old busy poll test failed 3 of 3 on 0.3.0. The new one passes 40 of 40 under race, and fails 3 of 3 when dbkit's open retry is changed to 1ms.
  • Twelve mutants of the settings code and of dbkit's open retry: eleven fail a Gophenberg test, and dbkit's own tests catch the last one.
  • By hand, 20 rounds each, with two and with eight migrate runs at once on a new file, with and without a held lock: every run passed, on main and on this branch.
  • Ctrl-C still stops a command waiting on a busy file within 2ms. The error now reads context canceled alone.
  • A write behind another write now starts 6 to 60ms after the lock frees, where 0.2.0 took 3 to 15ms. No timing test needed a wider margin.
  • The SDK compatibility tests failed 6 of 6 with x/tools 0.52.0 and pass 24 of 24 after the x/exp move.
  • Nothing sets PRAGMA busy_timeout or reaches the driver through sql.Conn.Raw, and no code outside the tests checks a BeginTx error against dbkit.ErrBusy.
  • Lint, cyclop, doclint, gofmt, go mod tidy, make generate and the docs build are clean. CodeScene scores every changed Go file 10.0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that the configured SQLite polling interval applies while opening connections waiting on a lock; other lock waits follow SQLite’s retry schedule.
    • Added detail on how command cancellation affects SQLite waits, including operations that may continue waiting up to the busy timeout.
    • Updated the documented Go version requirement for building from source to 1.27.3.
  • Chores
    • Updated the project’s Go version requirement to 1.27.3.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request upgrades the SQLite dependencies and Go version requirement. It clarifies that GOPHENBERG_SQLITE_BUSY_POLL applies to connection opening, updates related documentation, and changes the lock-retry test to check db.PingContext.

Changes: SQLite driver and busy-poll behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
SQLite dependency and Go version update
go.mod, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/updates-and-backups.md
The Go version requirement changes to 1.27.3. The SQLite-related and listed indirect dependencies are upgraded. The source-build documentation reflects the new Go version.
Busy-poll scope and connection-opening test
.env.example, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/configuration.md, docs/src/content/docs/self-hosting/updates-and-backups.md, internal/sqlite/open.go, internal/sqlite/open_test.go
Comments and documentation specify that busy polling applies to connection opening, while other lock waits follow SQLite’s retry schedule. The test holds a write lock through a driver connection and checks the timing of db.PingContext.

Explanation

Issue #533 requires dbkit/sqlite 0.3.0 with the related SQLite, libc, and Go versions. The PR description reports those dependency and Go updates. The changed documentation, .env.example, and internal/sqlite/open.go describe busy polling for connection opening. internal/sqlite/open_test.go now tests opening a connection with db.PingContext. The PR description also reports rechecked writer-wait timing and passing race-enabled test suites.

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #533. The x/exp, x/tools, libc, SQLite, and related dependency updates support the dbkit/sqlite upgrade and its SDK compatibility requirements. The documentation, settings text, test changes, and reported timing checks support the requested SQLite lock-wait behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Describe the changed lock-wait schedule.

The previous dbkit busy handler paced lock waits. After this upgrade, other waits use SQLite’s schedule. Replace “as before” with “now” so operators can identify the change in write-lock retry timing.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] No blocking findings remain. The changes since the previous review clarify the two operations that can still wait up to the busy timeout after Ctrl-C.

Summary

Moves dbkit/sqlite to 0.3.0 and raises the required Go version to 1.27.3.

  • SQLite opens use the busy poll, while other lock waits follow SQLite.
  • Source builds and SDK checks use newer Go tooling.

Since the previous review, only the cancellation exceptions were added. No actionable new issue was found.

Code Review ✅ Approved

🟡 Medium risk · Upgrading dbkit/sqlite changes lock-wait timing and retry behavior, which could delay writes or alter how quickly SQLite operations respond to cancellation.

Moves to dbkit/sqlite 0.3.0, which brings newer modernc.org/sqlite, libc and Go 1.27.3, and narrows GOPHENBERG_SQLITE_BUSY_POLL so it only paces opening a new connection while other lock waits follow SQLite's own schedule. No issues found.
