docs: completion architecture and ultracode plan - #786
Adds docs/COMPLETION-PLAN.adoc, a planning document for taking AffineScript to a complete language system. It is not a status authority; the capability matrix and the soundness ledger remain authoritative.
How it was built
Eight survey agents mapped AffineScript and its neighbours: typed-wasm, anytype, typell, the type-family repos, halting islands, absolute-zero, januskey with the MAA draft, and the ecosystem libraries.
Each agent labelled its claims RUN, READ, DOC or ABSENT, and ran builds and proof checks where the tools could be installed.
An adversarial reviewer then checked the draft against the maps. All 43 of its corrections are folded in, covering overclaims, omissions, ordering errors, banned-runtime slips and broken commands.
What it contains
A ground-truth snapshot per subsystem.
The target architecture, and where each estate repo plugs in.
Components that still need creating.
The fastest engineering route, as milestones M0 to M8 with commands.
The fastest proof route, as rungs P0 to P9 ordered by leverage on the shipped compiler.
Four rated strategic forks.
A ten-workflow ultracode plan, W0 to W9.
A cross-repo ledger and 15 owner questions.
Holes it records that the ledger lacks
I reproduced these four directly on a fresh build:
The interpreter ignores early return. g(5) gives 2, while WebAssembly gives 1.
A non-exhaustive match passes check, and the compiled WebAssembly returns 0 instead of trapping.
The survey also reports Bun-ESM and JS-text miscompiles of return, unchecked effect rows, and a typed-wasm verifier that fails open. I did not reproduce those myself.
For the owner
The new file carries the same CC-BY-SA-4.0 SPDX header as the sibling docs. Please confirm or replace it, since licence lines are yours to set.
The commit is signed with this session's configured SSH key, not id_ed25519_signing.
Checks run
bash tools/check-doc-truthing.sh reports OK.
asciidoctor --failure-level=WARN renders the file with no warnings.
Adds docs/COMPLETION-PLAN.adoc, built from an eight-cluster survey of
AffineScript and its estate neighbours (typed-wasm, anytype, typell,
the type-family repos, halting islands, absolute-zero, januskey/MAA,
and the ecosystem libraries), followed by an adversarial review pass.
It covers a ground-truth snapshot labelled RUN/READ/DOC/ABSENT, the
target architecture and where each estate repo plugs in, the fastest
engineering and proof routes, rated strategic forks, an ultracode
workflow plan, a cross-repo ledger and open owner questions.
It also records unledgered holes found by the survey, four of which
were reproduced directly: interpreter early return, non-exhaustive
match returning 0 on WASM, eval skipping the borrow checker, and
`total fn` being unchecked. Planning document only; CAPABILITY-MATRIX
and SOUNDNESS remain the status authorities.

Add the other Coq assertion keywords to the AllAssump.v grep.
The planned grep matches only Theorem, Lemma, Corollary and Example. Coq also accepts Proposition, Fact and Remark as assertion keywords. A proof declared with one of these and closed by Admitted would not appear in AllAssump.v, so the count check would still pass.

- Line 570: Update the M7 verification command’s grep filter to require a
positive type-verified count, matching the `L2 access typing: [1-9][0-9]*
type-verified` format. Preserve the existing compile and verifier steps.
- Line 660: Revise the translation-validation claim in section 5.1 to
distinguish the checks’ scope: state that P1 checks ownership and access-typing
annotations on each emitted .wasm, while P2 is a test-time differential check
against Coq limited to the int/bool/let/if fragment. Clarify that neither check
establishes semantic correctness or proves codegen.ml.
- Line 827: Expand the W1 fan-out scope in section 3 and the matching item in
section 3 to include H16–H18 alongside H1–H13. Keep the existing
one-agent-per-hole worktree and xfail-fixture/ledger-row requirements unchanged.
- Line 207: Update the H6 entry so only the eval borrow-checking gap is marked
RUN; identify the REPL gap as READ only because the REPL is not built. Leave the
trait-coherence scope and other status classifications unchanged.
- Line 498: Update the M1 check around the `dune runtest --force` command to
preserve and assert its exit status, then compare the `XFAIL-OK` and `FENCE-OK`
marker count against the existing pin count plus 13. Make both conditions
executable checks rather than leaving the threshold in a comment.
- Line 558: Add a count check immediately before the M6 loop over verified
`.affine` programs; fail the gate when fewer than 20 matching files are present,
while preserving the existing per-program compilation checks.
- Around line 481-485: Update the M0 package-install commands to pin apt package
versions using the settled versions in the W0 toolchain manifest, and pin each
cargo-installed tool to the versions already used by the repository’s
provisioning scripts. Establish the approved Coq version before pinning it; keep
the existing installation scope unchanged.
- Around line 559-560: Update the corpus loop so failures from compilation,
tw-verify, execution, or output comparison are recorded per member and make the
loop exit nonzero. Ensure the wasmtime run | diff pipeline propagates failures
from both commands by using pipefail in a shell that supports it, and preserve
reporting of each failed corpus member.

Addresses the CodeRabbit review on the completion plan:
- M0 pins cargo tools to the repo's existing versions.
- M1 checks dune's exit status and compares the marker count.
- M6 requires at least 20 programs, uses pipefail, and exits
non-zero when any member fails.
- M7 requires a positive type-verified count.
- H6 marks the REPL gap as READ only.
- 5.1 narrows the per-output assurance claim to what P1 and P2 check.
- W1, M1 and section 3 now cover H16-H18.
- The AllAssump.v grep includes Proposition, Fact and Remark.
The M1 and M6 snippets were exercised against stubbed tools: an empty
corpus, a wrong output, a crashing run and a failing dune all exit 1.

Preserve failures in the stdlib validation loop
When any stdlib module fails after effect checking is tightened, || echo FAIL $f converts that failure back to status 0, so this command still completes successfully and cannot enforce the stated M3 exit criterion. Track a failure flag or otherwise return nonzero after the loop so broken stdlib modules block the milestone.

Enumerate all examples in the blast-radius experiment
Under Bash's default settings, ** is not recursive: this expands only one directory level below examples and currently checks 7 of the repository's 20 .affine examples, omitting every root-level example and the deeper consumer fixture. The resulting count can therefore materially understate the exhaustiveness blast radius used for the owner's decision; enable globstar or use find/git ls-files.

Create the empty module inside the W5 workflow
When W5 runs in a fresh session, /tmp/empty.wasm has not been created by this workflow; its only creation appears in the separate M5 example. The verifier command would therefore test a missing-file error rather than rejection of a carrier-free valid module—and could even produce the expected exit code—so W5 should construct the eight-byte module immediately before invoking tw-verify.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Use repository-qualified paths for every W9 gate
When W9 is executed from the repository root as described, the latter two commands are not in PATH; both scripts live under tools/, like the first gate. This makes truth reconciliation stop with command not found before checking either capability anchors or the soundness ledger.

Point the emitter task at an existing handoff
The cited docs/developer/handoff-typed-access-sites-codegen.adoc does not exist in this commit, and a repo-wide search finds neither that file nor another occurrence of its name. An implementer reaching the regions/access-sites task therefore cannot follow the only referenced handoff; add the document or replace this with an existing design source.

Gate the Cadre E2E migration too
W8 requires both the DOM and Cadre harnesses to be ported and wired into CI, but its acceptance gates invoke only the DOM harness. A broken or still-Node-based affinescript-cadre/e2e/run.sh can therefore pass this workflow unchecked; add the Cadre script alongside the DOM gate.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Test quarantine with an existing source file
There is no x.affine in the repository and this name is not marked as a fixture to create, so the command returns nonzero for a missing input even if Lua remains usable without --experimental. Use a known compilable fixture and assert the diagnostic is specifically the experimental-backend guard so M8 cannot report a false pass.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Initialize the baseline marker count before checking M1
In a fresh M1 shell, EXISTING is never assigned, and Bash arithmetic treats the unset name as zero, so this requires only 16 total markers rather than 16 new markers beyond the existing baseline. The current harness already emits baseline XFAIL/FENCE markers, allowing some newly required pins to be absent while this check passes; capture or explicitly set the pre-M1 count before comparing.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Run the echo-types gate from its repository
When W0 follows the listed commands, the echo-types invocation has no cd or repository-qualified path, unlike the typed-wasm and Coq gates. Neither AffineScript nor typed-wasm provides the referenced proofs/agda/All.agda, so the command fails or checks the wrong checkout depending on the caller's ambient directory; define the echo-types root and run the gate from there.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Exercise the wasmtime gate adapter in W5
Although W5 explicitly includes delivery of a wasmtime adapter for typed-wasm-gate, its runtime command invokes plain wasmtime directly and therefore bypasses that adapter. The listed tests can all pass with the adapter absent or accepting unverified modules; add acceptance and rejection cases that load modules through the new adapter itself.
