Test what your agent does, not just what it says.
Local, code-first behavioral testing for TypeScript and Node.js agents.
Ethogram runs a scenario against your agent and checks the tool calls that matter. A Story can require the agent to check a policy, forbid it from granting access directly, and verify that it requested approval instead.
Stories live in your repository as TypeScript. Ethogram runs them locally and shows the current result in a read-only browser interface.

You need Node.js 20.9 or newer and a TypeScript or Node.js project whose package.json has a name. Run these commands from the project root:

Select Admin Access Requires Approval, choose Run Story, and you should see PASS for all three expectations. The starter is local and deterministic: it calls no model and creates no external side effects. Its job is to show how a Story, an execution profile, observed tool calls, and evaluation fit together.
ethogram init is non-destructive. It writes nothing if one of its target files already exists with different content.

})given describes the situation. when is the request. expectations names the tool calls that must or must not occur. execution.profile selects the adapter that turns this Story into a real run.
Edit either the Story or its profile while ethogram dev is running. Ethogram reloads relevant TypeScript and JavaScript files automatically and invalidates the old result. Run the Story again to evaluate the current code.

Ethogram is not an agent framework. Your agent keeps its entry point, tools, model provider, policies, and runtime.
Install Ethogram and create the configuration file without adding the starter:

The profile may translate Story input into the shape your agent expects. It must not copy the agent's policy, branch on Story ids, call tools because an expectation names them, or fabricate a trace.
If your framework owns tool dispatch, return tool-call facts from that same invocation as external execution evidence. Do not re-run tools just to produce evidence.

Ethogram currently supports tool-called and tool-not-called. A failed tool attempt still counts as called; it does not prove that the tool succeeded. Execution errors, timeouts, stale source revisions, and cancelled runs are operational failures, not behavioral FAIL results.
@ethogram/mcp lets a compatible MCP host explain Ethogram, inspect a configured project, diagnose setup, and deliberately run one revision-bound Story.
After inspecting the MCP trust and execution model, start the published server with an absolute project path:

Its worker contains protocol crashes and hangs, but it is not an operating-system sandbox. Running a Story can call external services, spend money, or cause irreversible effects. Ethogram therefore requires an inspected revision, an exact Story digest, and an explicit external-effects acknowledgement; it never retries automatically.

A PASS covers only the declared matchers for one completed execution. It is not proof that an agent is generally safe, correct, compliant, or ready for production. Read the full alpha limitations before using Ethogram in a critical workflow.
package.jsonis missing or unnamed: run Ethogram from a Node project root and add a non-emptyname.ethogram initreports a conflict: no files were changed. Move, rename, or reconcile the listed file, then run the command again.- No Stories were found: check the directories in
ethogram.config.mjsand use the*.agent.stories.tsnaming convention. - The default port is busy: run
npx ethogram dev --port 4318. - The result became stale: source changed after inspection or during execution. Review the change and run the Story again; never retry an effectful run automatically.
Run npx ethogram --help for all CLI options. When reporting a problem, include the Ethogram version, Node version, operating system, reproduction steps, and sanitized terminal output. Do not post credentials, prompts, tool inputs, model responses, or raw evidence without reviewing and redacting them.

npm run test:existing-agentTests 01–09 are frozen architectural records. Preserve their historical wording when changing executable tests or current documentation.
Releases are published from GitHub Actions through npm Trusted Publishing. The workflow uses short-lived OIDC identity and npm provenance; the repository stores no npm write token. Maintainers should follow the release procedure, including the one-time trusted-publisher setup required for each package.
