Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Ticker and NTP now provide read-only, disposable signals that update with time ticks and NTP calibration data.
  • Changes
    • Several legacy Tempo APIs and format tokens are no longer available. Use the documented canonical alternatives, such as Tempo.use, Tempo.enums, eon, woy, and dd.
  • Documentation
    • Added a v5 migration guide and documentation version selector, with links to v4 docs and the migration guide.

Walkthrough

The pull request removes deprecated Tempo APIs and formatting tokens, adds ticker and NTP reactive signals, and moves several modules to plugin SDK imports. It also updates migration documentation, tests, review filters, and documentation deployment triggers.

Changes: Tempo v5 API and formatting changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove deprecated Tempo APIs
packages/tempo/src/tempo.class.ts, packages/tempo/src/support/*, packages/tempo/src/tempo.type.ts, packages/tempo/test/core/*, packages/tempo/test/discrete/parse.locale.test.ts, packages/tempo/test/engine/*
Tempo removes deprecated static and instance APIs, enum and helper exports, and related type aliases. Tests use use() and canonical getters where applicable.
Remove deprecated formatting tokens
packages/tempo/src/engine/engine.lexer.ts, packages/tempo/src/engine/engine.pattern.ts, packages/tempo/src/module/module.format.ts, packages/tempo/src/support/support.default.ts, packages/tempo/src/support/support.symbol.ts, packages/tempo/src/tempo.type.ts, packages/tempo/test/core/intl.locale-info.test.ts, packages/tempo/test/discrete/format.test.ts, packages/tempo/test/discrete/timezone_token.test.ts, packages/tempo/doc/2-core-concepts/tempo.format.md
Timezone and composite week-year aliases and modifiers are removed from parsing, formatting, token registries, and format types. Tests and documentation reflect the remaining tokens.
Document v5 migration changes
packages/tempo/doc/8-project-and-support/migration-guide.md, packages/tempo/.vitepress/config.ts, packages/tempo/doc/2-core-concepts/tempo.getters.md
The migration guide lists removed APIs and tokens with replacements. The documentation navigation adds version links, and the getters page removes its deprecation note.

Plugin SDK imports and value types

Layer / File(s) Summary
Use SDK exports and ValueOf types
packages/tempo/src/plugin/plugin.sdk.ts, packages/plugins/dialects/src/compiler/*, packages/plugins/dialects/src/index.ts, packages/tempo/src/engine/engine.term.ts, packages/functions/src/celestial/solar.ts
Dialect compilers consolidate utility and enum imports through the plugin SDK. Several token and value types use ValueOf, and the SDK re-exports getRuntime.

Ticker and NTP reactive signals

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add ticker signal APIs
packages/plugins/ticker/src/index.ts, packages/plugins/ticker/test/ticker.signal.test.ts, packages/plugins/ticker/doc/reactive-clocks-and-events.md, packages/library/test/common/runtime/reactive.class.test.ts
Ticker exposes cached and factory-created signals with disposal support. Tests cover signal updates and lifecycle behavior, and the reactive-clock example uses the ticker signal. The reactive getter-error test verifies logging and restores its spy.
Expose NTP state and clock signals
packages/plugins/ntp/src/types.ts, packages/plugins/ntp/src/engine.ts, packages/plugins/ntp/src/index.ts, packages/plugins/ntp/test/ntp.signals.test.ts
NTP exposes offset, calibration, and drift signals. Its clock signal updates on ticker or timer cadence and when calibration changes. Tests cover state updates, disposal, and ticker integration.

Review and documentation deployment configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update review filters and deployment triggers
.coderabbit.yaml, .github/workflows/deploy-docs.yml
The review filter excludes public v4 documentation and no longer excludes all Markdown files. The documentation workflow retains manual dispatch and comments out its push trigger.

  • magmacomputing/magma#108: Adds dialect compiler modules and shared utilities that this pull request migrates to the plugin SDK, and introduces exports removed or replaced here.
  • magmacomputing/magma#109: Adds Signify and reactive signal APIs used by the ticker and NTP signal changes, and defines v5 API removals documented here.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 544f4

The new ticker and NTP signals have lifecycle and scheduling defects that can silently stop updates or cause bursts of timer callbacks. The dialects plugin may not load under its declared Tempo 4.7 peer range. Typed callers using the {ww} format token will fail to compile. The migration guide gives inaccurate replacements for three removed APIs. Resolve these before merging.

Preserve Tempo 4 compatibility for getRuntime.

The package still declares @magmacomputing/tempo ^4.7.0 || ^5.0.0. Tempo 4.7 does not export getRuntime from plugin/sdk; it exports the helper from @magmacomputing/tempo/support. This named import prevents the dialect package from loading under Tempo 4.7. Import getRuntime from /support separately, or raise the peer minimum to ^5.0.0 and update the development dependency. Use a local ticker cadence for the NTP clock signal.

If calibration moves NTP time forward after this ticker has pulsed, ntp: true leaves its next scheduled time behind the new clock. TickerInstance.#delayMs() then returns zero until the ticker catches up. A large offset can produce a burst of timer callbacks. getCurrent() already applies NTP time to each signal value. Use a local cadence here, or rebase the ticker schedule when calibration changes.

Keep the ticker alive while its instance signal is in use.

If a caller retains only Tempo.ticker({ seconds: 1 }).signal, the ticker proxy can be collected while the signal remains in use. createTicker() then stops the ticker through its proxy finalizer, and the signal stops updating. Make the returned signal retain its ticker until signal disposal, or define another explicit ownership rule. The Reactive.toSignal() accessor does not retain the ticker proxy. Correct the day-getter replacements.

t.dd returns a number, not a padded string. t.d is not a getter. A reader who uses t.d will get an invalid property access. State that t.dd is the numeric replacement for t.day; use t.format('{dd}') when padded text is needed. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Preserve instance configuration in the clone replacement.

In v4.7.0, t.clone() called from(t, t.config). The documented Tempo.from(t) creates a new instance without those options. For an instance with a local locale or formatting configuration, the replacement can change the clone’s output. Document Tempo.from(t, t.config) when the migration must preserve that configuration. Include the compact-offset replacement.

In v4.7.0, {tz:zzz} produced an offset without a colon. None of the three replacements listed here preserves that output. The v5 formatter supports {tz:offsetcompact}. Add it to the migration mapping so existing formatted values do not change from, for example, +0530 to +05:30. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the supported ww format token in TempoFormatTokens.

ValidateFormat<'{ww:month}'> now reports an invalid token, but the formatter still handles ww and the formatting guide still documents {ww:month}. Restore ww in this interface so token validation matches the supported format API. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
