Pre-flight checklist

  • I have read the Contributing Guidelines on pull requests.
  • If this is a code change: I have written unit tests and/or added dogfooding pages to fully verify the new behavior.
  • If this is a new API or substantial change: the PR has an accompanying issue (closes #0000) and the maintainers have approved on my working plan.

Motivation

Fixes #11920.

On Windows, Git Bash / MSYS reports repository paths as POSIX "mount" paths such as /c/Users/foo (or /p/projets/my-repo) instead of C:\Users\foo. getGitRepoRoot / getGitSuperProjectRoot passed this output straight to fs.realpath, where Node resolves the leading /p as a directory under the current drive root — producing P:\p\projets\... instead of P:\projets\... and failing the build with ENOENT: ... realpath 'P:\p\projets\...'.

This normalizes the output of git rev-parse --show-toplevel and --show-superproject-working-tree on Windows, converting a /<drive>/... mount path back to a real Windows path before fs.realpath. Standard Git-for-Windows output (C:/...) and POSIX paths are left unchanged.

Test Plan

Added unit tests for the new fromGitBashPath helper covering mount-path conversion (/p/projets/my-repo → P:\projets\my-repo), drive-letter upper-casing, and pass-through of standard Windows (C:/...) and POSIX (/home/user, /usr/local, /c) paths. yarn test (in packages/docusaurus-utils).

This is a build-time path-handling fix with no UI impact, so no dogfooding page applies.

Closes #11920

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved repository path handling on Windows when Git returns paths in Git Bash or MSYS format, helping Docusaurus resolve repository locations correctly.
    • Git Bash drive paths, including paths pointing directly to a drive root, are now recognized as standard uppercase-drive Windows paths before repository locations are resolved.
    • Standard Windows drive-letter paths and POSIX paths continue to be handled unchanged.

On Windows, Git Bash / MSYS reports repository paths as POSIX "mount"
paths such as `/c/Users/foo` instead of `C:\Users\foo`. Passing these to
Node's filesystem APIs resolves `/c` as a directory under the current
drive root (e.g. `C:\c\Users\foo`), so the build fails with an ENOENT on
a path like `P:\p\projets\...` instead of `P:\projets\...`.

Normalize the output of `git rev-parse --show-toplevel` and
`--show-superproject-working-tree` on Windows, converting a `/<drive>/...`
mount path back to a real Windows path before calling `fs.realpath`.
Standard Git-for-Windows output (`C:/...`) and POSIX paths are unchanged.

Walkthrough

The change adds conversion for Git Bash mount paths and applies it to Git repository root paths on Windows before fs.realpath resolution.

Changes: Git path normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Convert Git Bash paths
packages/docusaurus-utils/src/vcs/gitUtils.ts, packages/docusaurus-utils/src/vcs/__tests__/gitUtils.test.ts
Adds fromGitBashPath to convert single-letter mount paths to uppercase-drive Windows paths. Tests cover converted paths and inputs that remain unchanged.
Normalize Git root paths

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #11920 requires correct Windows conversion of Git Bash/MSYS mount paths before filesystem resolution. fromGitBashPath converts /p/projets/my-repo to P:\projets\my-repo and uppercases the drive letter. normalizeGitPath applies this conversion only on Windows. getGitRepoRoot and getGitSuperProjectRoot use the normalized value before fs.realpath. Tests cover both resolvers on Windows, non-Windows pass-through, drive-root paths, standard Windows paths, and POSIX paths.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed source adds the path conversion required by issue #11920. The unit tests cover the helper and both Git root resolvers. The non-Windows test verifies that valid POSIX paths remain unchanged. No unrelated code or test changes are shown.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The regex requires a slash after the drive letter, so fromGitBashPath('/c') returns /c rather than the Windows drive root. Both Git-root resolution paths would then pass that value to fs.realpath.

Root resolution may fail with ENOENT or resolve a different directory instead of C:\.

This can occur when: On Windows, Git Bash reports a repository or superproject located at a drive root as /c.

Make the subpath optional in fromGitBashPath so a repository located at a
drive root, which Git Bash reports as `/c`, maps to `C:\` instead of being
passed through unchanged to fs.realpath.

Add a Windows-mode test for the repository root resolvers.

The new drive-root assertions only call fromGitBashPath. No test runs getGitRepoRoot or getGitSuperProjectRoot with Git Bash output and process.platform set to win32. Removing normalizeGitPath from the fs.realpath calls at gitUtils.ts:295 or gitUtils.ts:326 leaves the suite passing. Stub the Git command output and the platform, then assert the path passed to fs.realpath.

Add Windows-mode tests for getGitRepoRoot and getGitSuperProjectRoot that
stub the Git command output, force process.platform to win32, and assert each
resolver passes a normalized Windows path to fs.realpath. The tests fail if
normalizeGitPath is removed from either resolver. They live in a separate file
so their module mocks do not affect the real-Git integration tests.

Add a POSIX case for the platform guard in normalizeGitPath.

Both resolver tests in this file force win32. Removing the process.platform === 'win32' check in normalizeGitPath still passes this suite and the real-Git tests. On Linux, a Git-returned path such as /c/project is a valid absolute path that passes through unchanged today. Without the guard, fromGitBashPath rewrites it to C:\project. fs.realpath can then fail on that relative path.

Add a test that sets process.platform to linux and expects both resolvers to pass the POSIX path through unchanged. The afterEach hook restores the original platform.

Add a non-Windows case to the resolver wiring tests: with process.platform
set to linux, a Git-returned `/c/project` path reaches fs.realpath unchanged.
This guards the win32 check in normalizeGitPath, so the test fails if that
guard is removed.
Use the i flag and named capture groups in the drive-path regex, as regexp/use-ignore-case and prefer-named-capture-group require, and wrap the comments to 80 columns. Behaviour is unchanged.

🐛 Windows: incorrect path conversion from Git POSIX paths (/x/...) to Windows paths (X:\...)
