Negated absolute paths in skipFiles have no effect. With

"skipFiles": [
  "${workspaceFolder}/node_modules/**",
  "!${workspaceFolder}/node_modules/my-lib/**"
]

scripts in node_modules/my-lib are still skipped. The same happens with a relative positive entry (**/node_modules/**) and an absolute negation. Relative negations such as !**/node_modules/my-lib/** work. Negated node internals are ignored too: ["<node_internals>/**", "!<node_internals>/events"] still skips node:events.

Absolute paths. preprocessAuthoredGlobs turns absolute entries into file:/// URLs, but it calls urlUtils.isAbsolute() on the raw pattern. The leading ! makes a negated entry look relative, so it stays a bare path (!/proj/node_modules/my-lib/**) while the positive entry becomes file:///proj/node_modules/**. The lookahead built from it, ^(?!\/proj\/node_modules\/my-lib\/)file:\/\/\/proj\/node_modules\/, can never match a file:/// URL, so the exception is dropped, both in isScriptSkipped and in the patterns sent to Debugger.setBlackboxPatterns. This came in with #1422, which added the file URL conversion.

This change converts the glob without its ! (through rebaseLocalToRemote as well, so negations get the same remote mapping as positive entries) and then puts the ! back. The result has the same !file:///... form that setIsUrlBlackboxSkipped already writes when a file is toggled.

Node internals. preprocessNodeInternals only takes entries that start with <node_internals>/, and preprocessAuthoredGlobs drops every entry that contains the token, so !<node_internals>/events was dropped by both. This part is older than #1422. The regex now also accepts a leading ! and keeps it on the glob, which micromatch applies as a negation. The list is only used when at least one <node_internals> entry has no leading !. On its own, micromatch would read a lone negation as "every other module", while today it skips nothing, so that case stays as it is. A negation matches the same names as the positive entry would: <node_internals>/events for node:events, and <node_internals>/events.js on Node 14 and older.

  • Added src/adapter/scriptSkipper/scriptSkipper.test.ts. It builds a ScriptSkipper with a fake CDP and checks isScriptSkipped and the regexes sent to setBlackboxPatterns.
    • Four cases fail on main (expected true to be false) and pass with this change: absolute entry with absolute negation, relative entry with absolute negation, !<node_internals>/events (node: names), and !<node_internals>/events.js (Node 14 names).
    • Three pass on both and cover behavior that must not change: a relative negation, a lone !<node_internals>/... entry (still skips nothing), and <node_internals>/!(events), whose glob starts with ! itself.
  • Tests, run by the agent on macOS with Node 22 (CI uses Node 24, which was not run locally):
    • npm run test:unit: 312 passing. With only implementation.ts reverted to main, the four cases above are the only failures.
    • npm run test:types, plus dprint check and eslint --max-warnings=0 on the touched files: all clean.

I prepared this change with an AI coding agent (Claude Code). I am responsible for it and will answer review comments.

preprocessAuthoredGlobs turns absolute skipFiles entries into file URLs,
but it called isAbsolute() on the raw pattern. The leading "!" makes a
negated absolute path look relative, so "!${workspaceFolder}/foo/**"
stayed a bare path while the positive globs became file:/// URLs, and
the negation never matched a script. Convert the glob without its "!"
and put the "!" back afterwards.

Negated node internals ("!<node_internals>/events") were dropped for
the same reason: preprocessNodeInternals only matched entries that
start with "<node_internals>/", and preprocessAuthoredGlobs skips any
entry with the token. Keep the "!" on the node internals glob, which
micromatch applies as a negation, and only use the list when at least
one entry has no leading "!", so a lone negation still skips nothing.

Contribution License Agreement

This Contribution License Agreement (“Agreement”) is agreed to by the party signing below (“You”),
and conveys certain license rights to Microsoft Corporation and its affiliates (“Microsoft”) for Your
contributions to Microsoft open source projects. This Agreement is effective as of the latest signature
date below.

  1. Definitions.
“Code” means the computer software code, whether in human-readable or machine-executable form,
that is delivered by You to Microsoft under this Agreement.
“Project” means any of the projects owned or managed by Microsoft and offered under a license
approved by the Open Source Initiative (www.opensource.org).
“Submit” is the act of uploading, submitting, transmitting, or distributing code or other content to any
Project, including but not limited to communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control
systems, and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the Project for the purpose of
discussing and improving that Project, but excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or
otherwise designated in writing by You as “Not a Submission.”
“Submission” means the Code and any other copyrightable material Submitted by You, including any
    associated comments and documentation.
  2. Your Submission. You must agree to the terms of this Agreement before making a Submission to any
Project. This Agreement covers any and all Submissions that You, now or in the future (except as
described in Section 4 below), Submit to any Project.
  3. Originality of Work. You represent that each of Your Submissions is entirely Your original work.
Should You wish to Submit materials that are not Your original work, You may Submit them separately
to the Project if You (a) retain all copyright and license information that was in the materials as You
received them, (b) in the description accompanying Your Submission, include the phrase “Submission

property rights in Your Submission by contract or applicable law, You must secure permission from Your
employer to make the Submission before signing this Agreement. In that case, the term “You” in this
Agreement will refer to You and the employer collectively. If You change employers in the future and
desire to Submit additional Submissions for the new employer, then You agree to sign a new Agreement
and secure permission from the new employer before Submitting those Submissions.
