fix(layers): bidirectional rnn gradient and time alignment; lstm stale eval cache - #2280
Conversation
…l cache WordCharEmbeddingLayerTests.TapeGradient failed in CI on every PR that ran the W shard, and passed alone. Its weights come from the shared generator, so test order picked the initialization, and about one in eight exposed two real defects: - bidirectionallayer reversed its input with an untracked setslice copy, so no gradient reached the input through the backward direction, and it merged the backward output without reversing it back into time order (the gpu path, pytorch and keras all reverse it). both reversals are now tape-tracked flips along the wrapped layer's time axis, which was also wrong at rank 2 (it flipped the feature axis) - lstmlayer's eval-mode stacked-weight cache ignored in-place writes, so inference kept the old weights after an optimizer step or a finite-difference probe; it is now stamped with the source tensors' mutation versions The real gradient check passes at 41 of 41 generator positions (5 failed before; 6 still fail with only the bidirectional fix reverted). Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. WalkthroughThe bidirectional layer uses tensor-engine flips to reverse backward-pass inputs and restore output order. The fused CPU LSTM cache tracks source tensor mutation versions and repacks when they change. Regression tests cover gradients, sequence alignment, and in-place weight updates. The test-impact script lowers its matrix character limit and changes passthrough outputs. Workflow checks validate the limit and output fallbacks. ChangesRecurrent Layer Correctness

…ed test sources The 20-PR replay found two escalations that are neither R9 categories nor explained. - #2275 escalated on api/package-lock.json, an Azure Function with its own deploy workflow. The R7 reference rule now covers every top-level tree except src/, tests/ and dot directories. A tree counts as referenced when an MSBuild file, solution or sonarcloud.yml names it as a path, or a test reads it (as a path or a Path.Combine/Path.Join argument). Product .cs files are not searched: [Route("api/...")] is a route, not a path. On the current tree this makes api/, scripts/, examples/, templates/, schemas/, results/, review-tests/, TemplateEngineHost/ and PhaseATestRunner/ non-runtime. benchmarks/, testconsole/, samples/, docs/, data/ and ci-proof/ stay referenced. - #2280 escalated on a new test file no shard filter selects. The full matrix would not run those tests either, and the Build job's inventory gate now fails the PR until a filter selects them, so the file is recorded as unassigned instead of escalating. Both get self-test cases; the old behaviour fails each of them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
GitHub caps a job's outputs at 1,048,576 bytes counted in UTF-16, two bytes per ASCII character. Select-AffectedTests budgeted matrix + ledger_matrix at 800,000 characters as if they were bytes, so a broad plan (this PR touches the shared model test base, reaching most model classes) passed the check and the Build job then failed with "Job outputs exceed 1,048,576 bytes", cancelling every shard. The budget is now 400,000 characters (~800 KB), leaving room for the job's other outputs, and the workflow contract asserts it stays at or under 450,000 (positive control: the contract fails at 800,000). Re-publishing select-shards' matrices added their full size to the Build job's outputs, which a large selection can push past github's 1,048,576 byte utf-16 cap. every consumer already reads needs.build.outputs.x || needs.select-shards.outputs.x, so an empty value is the passthrough. the workflow contract now asserts both the fallback on every consumer and that the passthrough no longer re-publishes. OutputAxesForreturningnullonly makes shape inference decline. It does not reject the tensor beforeForwardTraced. LSTM and GRU accept rank-greater-than-3 inputs as[..., time, features], but this branch flips axis1, which is a leading dimension. The backward layer therefore receives the original time order, and the tape-tracked input gradients use the wrong reversal axis.Suggested fix

Problem
WordCharEmbeddingLayerTests.TapeGradient_ShouldMatchNumericalGradientfails in the "ModelFamily - Generated Layers W" shard on every PR that runs it (#2279, #2277, #2267), and passes alone. The analytical gradient had the wrong sign (−0.054 vs +0.137).Cause
The layer's weights come from the shared random generator, so test order chose the initialization. Running the real check after 0–40 generator draws failed for 5 of 41 positions. Those initializations exposed two real defects:
BidirectionalLayer(CPU)SetSlicecopy, so no gradient reached the input through the backward direction. Measured input-gradient directional derivative: analytical 0.056 vs numerical 1.962.LSTMLayereval-mode stacked-weight cache ignored in-place weight writes. After an optimizer step or a finite-difference probe, inference kept using the old weights: every LSTM tensor showed a numerical derivative of exactly 0.Fix
Engine.TensorFlipcalls along the wrapped layer's time axis:RecurrentLayer, which is time-major.Versionof its 12 source tensors and repacks when that sum changes.Evidence
BidirectionalRecurrentRegressionTests(3 tests). Each fails without its fix and passes with it:Behaviour change: a CPU
BidirectionalLayernow produces the standard, time-aligned output, which its GPU path already produced. Models trained with the old misaligned CPU output will see different outputs.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
