What

Closes the remaining TOML literal-multiline injection sinks identified in LOG-9752 (FIND-004), a follow-up to LOG-9704 / #3390 which fixed only the drop-filter sink.

Why

go-toml v1 emits struct fields tagged multiline:"true" literal:"true" (transforms.Remap.Source, transforms.Filter.Condition) verbatim between ''' delimiters with no escaping. A value derived from an untrusted ClusterLogForwarder spec that contains the ''' terminator breaks out of the TOML string and injects arbitrary TOML into the generated collector configuration, crash-looping the tenant's collector.

How

Two layers:

  1. Structural guard (internal/utils/toml): toml.Marshal walks the config and rejects any literal-multiline field containing the terminator. This is the single choke point every VRL sink funnels through, so it covers output user-templates, prune/drop FieldPath, kubeAPIAudit wildcards, and any future literal sink. A malformed config is never rendered — the reconciler reports the error instead of deploying a broken collector.

  2. Defense-in-depth admission validation (clear status condition before generation):

    • outputs: cloudwatch.groupName, elasticsearch.index, googleCloudLogging.logId, kafka.topic, loki.tenantKey, splunk.index
    • filters: prune/drop FieldPath quoted segments
    • filters: kubeAPIAudit rule strings (users, groups, verbs, namespaces, nonResourceURLs, resources) — previously had no controller validation
    • backed by a shared common.ValidateTOMLLiteralSafe helper

Only the ''' terminator (plus newlines in single-line fields) is rejected, so legitimate values containing a single ' (e.g. VRL raw regex r'x', fallback literals) are unaffected.

Testing

New unit tests for the marshal guard and all three validation paths. Full internal/generator/..., internal/validations/..., and internal/utils/... suites pass; no legitimate config trips the guard.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Configuration validation now flags newline characters and TOML literal delimiters in supported filter field paths, Kubernetes audit rules and fields, OpenShift labels, and output template values. Validation messages identify the affected field.
    • TOML encoding now returns a field-specific error instead of encoding a literal multiline string that contains its closing delimiter. Other fields containing that delimiter are not affected by this check.

…config

go-toml v1 emits struct fields tagged `multiline:"true" literal:"true"`
(transforms.Remap.Source and transforms.Filter.Condition) verbatim between
''' delimiters with no escaping. A value derived from an untrusted
ClusterLogForwarder spec that contains the ''' terminator breaks out of the
TOML string and injects arbitrary TOML into the collector configuration.

FIND-001 (LOG-9704) fixed only the drop-filter sink. This closes the
remaining sinks that share the same encoder gap:

- Structural guard (internal/utils/toml): toml.Marshal now walks the config
and rejects any literal-multiline field whose value contains the terminator.
This is the single choke point every VRL sink funnels through, so it covers
output user-templates, prune/drop FieldPath, kubeAPIAudit wildcards, and any
future literal sink. A malformed config is never rendered; the reconciler
reports the error instead of deploying a crash-looping collector.

- Defense-in-depth admission validation, so a bad spec is rejected with a
  clear status condition before generation:
  - outputs: cloudwatch.groupName, elasticsearch.index, googleCloudLogging.logId,
    kafka.topic, loki.tenantKey, splunk.index
  - filters: prune/drop FieldPath quoted segments
  - filters: kubeAPIAudit rule strings (users, groups, verbs, namespaces,
nonResourceURLs, resources) which previously had no controller validation
A shared common.ValidateTOMLLiteralSafe helper backs all three.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds TOML literal-safety checks to observability filter and output validation. It also validates tagged literal multiline fields before TOML marshalling.

Changes

TOML Literal Safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
TOML marshalling guard
internal/utils/toml/toml.go, internal/utils/toml/toml_suite_test.go, internal/utils/toml/toml_test.go
Marshal validates tagged literal multiline strings before encoding. Tests cover nested field paths, accepted values, and fields without the tags.

The shared check rejects the TOML literal multiline terminator, newlines, and carriage returns. Filter validation checks field paths, API audit values, and OpenShift label keys and values. Tests cover accepted values and validation errors.
Output template validation
internal/validations/observability/outputs/validate.go, internal/validations/observability/outputs/validate_toml_literal_test.go
Output validation checks configured template fields across supported output types. Tests cover accepted values and validation messages.

Extend admission-time TOML literal-multiline injection guards to every
user-controlled string that reaches a Vector remap source:

- filters: validate openshiftLabels keys/values; validate kubeAPIAudit
rule Level, rule OmitStages, and filter-level OmitStages
- outputs: validate splunk source/sourceType/payloadKey, s3 keyPrefix,
  and syslog facility/severity/appName/procId/msgId/payloadKey

Splunk IndexedFields flow through GenerateQuotedPathSegmentArrayStr into the

literal-multiline terminator, so validate each entry at admission time.

Validate only the configuration selected by output.Type.

Validate uses every message from validateOutputTemplates to set the output condition. The API rules require the selected configuration but do not reject additional configuration objects. Therefore, an unsafe inactive Cloudwatch.GroupName can invalidate a Kafka output even though Kafka generation ignores that object. Apply the active-type guard to each template branch.

Result: CLF invalid, no DaemonSet created ✅

Test 3: kubeAPIAudit Injection — BLOCKED

CLF:

filters:
- name: audit-test
  type: kubeAPIAudit
  kubeAPIAudit:
    rules:
    - level: Metadata
      users:
      - "admin'''inject"

Validation Error:

kubeAPIAudit user "admin'''inject" must not contain the sequence "'''"

Result: CLF invalid, no DaemonSet created ✅

Test 4: Valid CLF — ACCEPTED (Control Test)

CLF:

filters:
- name: valid-prune
  type: prune
  prune:
    in:
    - .kubernetes.labels # No ''' injection

Result: Validation passed, DaemonSet created, valid TOML generated ✅

Why this matters: Proves the fix only blocks the attack pattern (''') without breaking legitimate field paths.

Fix Validation

Two-layer defense confirmed working:

  1. Admission validation (verified):

    • Output templates (kafka.topic, splunk.index, loki.tenantKey, etc.) ✅
    • FieldPath (prune/drop quoted segments) ✅
    • kubeAPIAudit rules (users, groups, verbs, namespaces, etc.) ✅
    • Shared common.ValidateTOMLLiteralSafe helper active
  2. Structural guard (internal/utils/toml/toml.go):

    • Not triggered in tests (admission validation caught all malicious CLFs first)
    • Provides fallback protection during config generation

Before vs After

Aspect Before (v6.6.0) After (PR #3492)
Attack outcome CrashLoopBackOff Rejected at admission
Error visibility Pod logs only CLF status condition
Cluster impact DoS (all nodes) None
Legitimate CLFs Work Work

Conclusion

PR #3492 successfully mitigates LOG-9752. The fix:

✅ Blocks all three injection vectors with clear validation messages
✅ Prevents collector deployment before config generation
✅ Preserves legitimate CLF functionality
✅ Provides defense-in-depth (admission + generation guards)

Recommendation: Merge and backport to active release branches.
