Summary

Reference implementation for the idea in #14185.

While the sidebar is scoped to a project, New chat (the sidebar button and chat.new) creates the thread in that project instead of opening the "New thread in…" picker, which highlighted a different project first. The / landing draft picks from the scope too. Everything else (Shift+click, chat.newLocal, the palette's "New thread in X", SnapShot) resolves the viewed thread's project exactly as on main.

New chat (button, chat.new)
sidebar scoped? → the viewed project if it is in the scope, else the scoped project ← new
one project? → create in the current project
otherwise → open the "New thread in…" picker
  • useSidebarProjectScope resolves the persisted scope key to its project group. The legacy sidebar never shows the scope, so it never applies there.
  • resolveScopedNewThreadProjectRef keeps the viewed project only when it is a member of the scope, so a project on several machines keeps the viewed thread's machine. Otherwise it uses the scope's project: scoping does not navigate, so right after picking a scope you are usually still viewing a thread from another project.

Mobile is not changed: its project filter is local screen state and its New task flow does not read it.

Evidence

  • Before: scoped to React, New chat still opens the picker, with T3 Code highlighted.

    before

    before.mp4

  • After: from a T3 Code draft, scoped to React, the button opens a React draft. Scoped to Linux, Ctrl+Shift+O opens a Linux draft. Back on All projects, the picker returns.

    after

    after.mp4

  • Also checked in the running app: while scoped, Shift+click from a T3 Code draft stays in T3 Code, and / lands in the scoped project.

  • chatThreadActions.test.ts, Sidebar.logic.test.ts, useHandleNewThread.test.ts: 198 passed. apps/web typecheck passes.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way. No contract, server, or persisted-state change.
Blast radius: small. Only New chat and the / landing, only for web and desktop users with a sidebar project scope set.

Made with Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Closes #11895

Closes discussions

While the sidebar is scoped to a project, New chat (button and chat.new)
creates the thread in that project instead of opening the project picker,
and the / landing draft picks from the scope. Viewing a thread outside the
scope no longer sends new chats somewhere the scoped list would hide them.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes where new chats and initial landing drafts are created for users with a scoped sidebar, affecting several existing entry points across web and desktop. An unresolved hydration-timing concern could also cause the initial chat to target the wrong project before persisted settings are applied.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

When the sidebar has a project scope, new-thread actions use a project from that scope. The draft landing page also limits project selection to scope members. Without a scope, existing project-selection behavior remains.

Changes

Sidebar project scope

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve scope for project selection
apps/web/src/hooks/useSidebarProjectScope.ts, apps/web/src/routes/_chat.index.tsx
The new hook returns the project group matching the sidebar scope. The draft landing page filters candidate projects to scope members when a scope exists; otherwise, it considers all projects.
Resolve a scoped thread destination
apps/web/src/lib/chatThreadActions.ts, apps/web/src/lib/chatThreadActions.test.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useHandleNewThread.ts, apps/web/src/hooks/useHandleNewThread.test.ts
The resolver keeps the active thread or draft project when it belongs to the scope. Otherwise, it returns the scope’s representative project. useHandleNewThread exposes the resolved reference when scoped and null when unscoped. Tests cover in-scope and out-of-scope viewed threads.
Use the scoped destination for new threads
apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.tsx, apps/web/src/routes/_chat.tsx, docs/user/thread-sidebar.md
A non-Shift click on New in the scoped sidebar creates a thread in the scoped project and closes the mobile sidebar when applicable. The chat.new shortcut uses the resolved scoped project. The documentation describes this behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 69430

No concrete merge-blocking behavior is established. Maintainers should confirm that the shortcut and landing-page changes are within the intended scope.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 69430

New chats now follow the selected project scope, which can affect their target machine. Selection remains limited to known project groups, and no new permission bypass was identified. Downstream authorization has not been fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed effect is destination selection among projects represented in the client's current catalog, potentially spanning machines within a grouped project. It affects draft ownership and the environment queried for project defaults. The inspected changes do not demonstrate additional tenant, service, credential, or datastore authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The persisted scope key is a routing preference, not proof of authorization. Resolving it against current groups and matching both IDs constrains normal destination selection; bypassing the picker bypasses a destination-selection interface, not an evidenced permission control. Server-side authorization for project-file reads and eventual draft promotion remains outside the verified scope.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the behavior change, implementation details, verification results, evidence, and agent usage. However, it does not provide the required explicit maintainer approval for the expanded scope, especially the chat.new and / landing changes; the objectives note that this approval is still unresolved.

Resolution

Add a dedicated Scope and approval section. Link the triaged issue or discussion and include the maintainer approval comment confirming that chat.new and the / landing draft are within scope, or remove those additional changes until approval is documented.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The linked issue covers scoped sidebar New. The PR also changes the global chat.new shortcut and the / landing draft. The issue does not request these entry points. The review comments identify chat.new parity as a separate decision and report no maintainer approval for the added scope. CONTRIBUTING.md requires explicit maintainer approval for intentional product behavior changes beyond a linked issue.

This comment is posted by Julius' dot

Julius’s triage of #11895 approves scoped sidebar New, keeps Shift+click / chat.newLocal tied to the viewed project, and explicitly leaves chat.new parity for a separate decision. This PR additionally changes chat.new in _chat.tsx and the / landing draft in _chat.index.tsx; #14185 currently has no maintainer reply.

Can a maintainer confirm those two additional entry points belong in the approved scope, or should this PR stay with the sidebar button? The prior-approval rule requires agreement on direction and scope. Leaving this open for that specific decision; the approved sidebar enhancement remains useful.

This addresses my accepted request in #11895. I’d be happy to help with verification. Could we move forward with the approved sidebar-button behavior and handle shortcut/landing-page parity separately? I also see the workflows are awaiting maintainer approval.
