📝 Walkthrough

Cross-file Markdown links now retain heading fragments for resolution after parse results are merged. Matching fragments resolve to a heading in the target file. When no heading matches, the reference retains the target file stem. Tests cover both outcomes.

Changes: Cross-file Markdown heading links

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture and bind cross-file heading fragments
src/ingest_docs.h, src/ingest_parsepool.h, src/ingest_cache.h, src/quality.h, test/mdsectioncheck.sh
The Markdown parser stores cross-file fragments as qualifiers. A post-pass resolves them to matching target headings and leaves the target stem unchanged when no heading matches. Parser version values and test assertions are updated.

After only a linked Markdown file is edited, a cached run can show a heading link that no longer exists or points to the wrong heading. A cold run would give a different answer. Save the unbound refs and bind after the cache write before merging.

Thanks @muayyad-alsadi, this is a good start on item 1 of #409. I built ebe399b and ran it on ripwire's own docs. --callees='What it answers' on our README now lists the seven docs/COMMANDS.md headings it links to ("understand a codebase cold", "navigate / answer a question", …, "--scan-skills[=DIR]", "knobs / modes"). Before this change it listed one file-level edge. Slugs with --, / and backticks all bind. Links inside fenced code stay out. A heading named like a Python function binds to the section, not the function.

Since this is a WIP, here is design feedback only, aimed at saving you a round.

1. Cache: +1 to CodeRabbit's comment, with a repro. guide.md has [steps](partner.md#install-steps). Run with --cache, and --callees=Usage gives [Install Steps]. Then rename the heading in partner.md only:

  • warm run: callees=[] with graph_unresolved=0, so the edge disappears silently;
  • cold run: callees=[partner], the documented fallback.

The cached ref holds the bound name, and its qualifier has already been cleared, so nothing can bind it again.

2. Bind to the exact target, not a bare heading name. The bind already knows which heading it wants. Renaming the ref to the bare heading text hands that choice back to the name resolver, and the resolver's same-file/same-dir preferences then pick the wrong target:

  • Self-collision: docs/a/guide.md has its own ## Install and links ../b/partner.md#install. The edge lands on guide.md's own Install section. Before this PR it was a correct, coarser edge to partner.
  • Link path ignored: the target file is chosen by stem, so ../b/notes.md#setup lands on docs/a/notes.md when both directories have a notes.md. One real case in our tree: docs/ARCHITECTURE.md links ../README.md#languages, and that edge goes to docs/README.md (the same-directory stem), not the root README.
  • Duplicate headings: the comment says "first slug match", but two ## Notes in one file give two edges for #notes.

A shape that fixes all of these and the cache issue:

  • the extractor stores the link as written (target path normalized against the linking file, plus the slug), which is stable per file and safe to cache;
  • the exact (file, slug) lookup runs where every def is known and nothing is cached (the model/graph build, the same way backtick doc→code mentions are resolved in buildGraph), or through a pinned-target field on the shared reference path.

resolve.h already has joinRel/lexicalNormalize for the ../ part, and siblift_detail::dirOf matches your parentDir. The same (file, slug) index would also give #409's item 2 (dead anchors in --doc-drift) for free.

3. Version constants. The 175 (skipping 174, the rich file tag) follows the convention. Other in-flight work also uses those numbers, though, so expect to renumber on rebase. If refs are cached unbound, the record format does not change, so kParserVer is the only bump needed and kCacheVersion can stay.

4. Tests that would fail first. These are suggested arms for test/mdsectioncheck.sh. Each one fails on this head:

  • the linking file has a heading with the same name as the target heading;
  • two notes.md files in different directories;
  • ../README.md#x from docs/ while docs/README.md exists;
  • warm equals cold after editing only the target file;
  • #notes with a duplicate heading gives one edge.

These near misses must keep passing:

  • a heading equal to a function name in a .py file next to the linking file;
  • a heading equal to a local variable name in code (no code edge);
  • a link inside a ```python fence (no edge);
  • #no-such-heading, which falls back to the stem.

Removing the bind call should make the first, second and fourth arms fail.

Smaller points: percent-encoded slugs (#caf%C3%A9-notes) and GitHub's -1 suffix for duplicate headings fall back to the stem. The PR also needs a CHANGELOG line.

One question for later, not this PR: a bare --callers=parseConfig unions a function with a same-named heading (disclosed as cross_kind), so count= adds a link to a call. Headings named after functions are common in API docs, so a via="link"-style marker on link-edge rows may be worth it eventually.

A heading that shares a function's name stays in the callers union, and the row says the edge is a link.

Thanks @muayyad-alsadi, this round fixes everything from the first review. I built 4d8dd11 and the parent commit on main, and ran the same probes as last time.

  • Cache: I renamed the target heading and edited only partner.md. The warm run now gives the same edge as a cold run (the partner file node). Renaming the heading back gives Install Steps again, warm and cold. Moving the bind into buildGraph and caching the link as written was the right call. It also resolves CodeRabbit's cache thread.
  • Self-collision, link path, duplicates: ../b/partner.md#install binds partner's Install, not the linker's own Install. ../b/notes.md#setup binds docs/b/notes.md. Two ## Notes give one edge. On our own docs, docs/ARCHITECTURE.md's ../README.md#languages now lands on the root README's Languages section.
  • Version numbers and caches: kCacheVersion stays put. A cache written by the previous binary is refused cleanly ("parser-version … rebuilt").
  • Output on code-only answers: I compared 33 commands on three other repos, and code rows did not change. In a docs-heavy Python repo, unresolved refs dropped from 250 to 85 because links now bind by exact path.
  • Tests: every new exact-bind and via="link" arm in mdsectioncheck.sh fails on main and passes here.

Here is what's left before this can land:

1. The new gate arm fails on macOS. CI has macOS legs, and mdsectioncheck runs there. At test/mdsectioncheck.sh:429, sed -i 's/…/…/' FILE is GNU syntax. BSD sed takes the script as the backup suffix and errors with invalid command code. The file never changes, so "warm equals cold" passes without testing anything, and the next arm fails. sed -i.bak (or a small python rewrite) works on both. Please also assert that the file actually changed before the warm/cold comparison.

2. A doc link is counted as a caller on --safe-delete and --impact, with no mark. Repro: src/app.py defines run(), called by main(). docs/api.md has ## run, and docs/guide.md ## Run Notes links to it with [run](api.md#run).

  • --safe-delete=run: callers="1" impact_reaches="1" on main, callers="2" impact_reaches="2" here. The added row is <c n="Run Notes" …/> with no via.
  • --impact=run: the Run Notes row has no via="link" either.

--callers=run handles this well: cross_kind is disclosed and the row says via="link". The two counting verbs need the same marking. Better still, give links their own count, so that callers=/reaches= stay call counts.

3. via="link" currently marks only cross-file links whose file was found. noteMarkdownLinkSite treats every other site as a real call, and that includes other markdown links. Today:

  • [x](#later) gives a Later row with no via;
  • [[api]] gives an api row with no via;
  • [x](/docs/api.md) (root-relative, which misses the path join and falls to the stem lookup) gives a row with no via;
  • a section containing both [a](api.md) and [b](/docs/api.md) loses the mark on the pinned link as well.

The legend line "a real call on the same pair keeps the row unmarked" therefore doesn't hold yet. Deciding link-ness by where the ref came from (lang == Markdown && !isDocLink) instead of by whether the pin found a file would fix all four. When I made markdownLinkBit ignore realCalls, no arm in the gate failed, so the "real call wins" rule needs an arm too. A small fixture is enough: a code call and a link on the same pair.

Smaller points:

  • Dangling anchors are silent. [gone](api.md#removed-section) produces exactly the same row as a plain [x](api.md). The fallback to the file is right, and the CHANGELOG states it. Still, bindOneMarkdownLink already knows when it fell back with a non-empty slug. An anchor="missing" attribute or a header count would make the miss visible, and support markdown as a language #409's item 2 could reuse it for --doc-drift.
  • One negative arm can't fail. At line ~409, --callers='docs/a/tools.py:do_work' | grep -q via=link passes even if the command prints nothing. The fixture has no code caller of do_work (count is 0). A .py caller of do_work and a check that count ≥ 1 would make the arm real. --quality-delta flags this as vacuous-assert.
  • Two surfaces don't show via="link": --format=columnar (its via column is built from the name-only bit alone) and the MCP callers/callees twin (it emits only "via":"name"). CLI --json has it.
  • --quality-delta=main..HEAD gates 14 findings. The main ones are the clones linksOutAny/namesOnlyOutAny and pathHasLinkHop/pathHasNameOnlyHop, and nesting 4→5 in extractMarkdown and runCallHierarchy. Folding the link bit into the existing name-only helpers (an edge-kind enum instead of a second bool) would clear most of them.
  • Small perf guard: noteMarkdownLinkSite inserts every bound call pair into realCallEdges, even in a tree with no markdown links. I couldn't measure a difference on mid-size repos, but if( !mdLinkPin.empty() ) makes it free.
  • Two notes for comments: memberPath now also holds the markdown link. Every consumer gates on memberCall/isCompose/lang, so this is safe, but the field comment in model.h should say so. Also, kParserVer 185 will likely need renumbering on rebase, the same as last time.

The CI workflow run is waiting for maintainer approval (first-time contributor), so it hasn't run on this head yet.

@muayyad-alsadi, thank you, really. You took a fairly abstract design note from the first round (exact bind in the graph, cache the link as written, never rename to a bare name) and turned it into working code within a day, and every case we raised is now fixed. Markdown links becoming real, path-exact edges is a genuinely useful step for #409, and the way you did it gives the dead-anchor work (item 2) a clean index to build on. We appreciate the time you've put into this.

To make the last stretch as easy as possible, here is exactly what we'd suggest for the three items in my previous comment. Line numbers refer to 4d8dd11.

1. The warm/cold test on macOS (test/mdsectioncheck.sh:429)

macOS ships BSD sed, which reads the next argument after -i as a backup suffix. So sed -i 's/…/…/' FILE never edits the file there. Two small changes:

sed -i.bak 's/^## Install$/## Install Steps Renamed/' "$TMP/anchorcopy/docs/b/partner.md"
rm -f "$TMP/anchorcopy/docs/b/partner.md.bak"
grep -q '^## Install Steps Renamed$' "$TMP/anchorcopy/docs/b/partner.md" || no "fixture edit did not apply (sed)"

The grep -q guard is the important part: it turns a silent no-op edit into a visible failure, on any platform.

2. A doc link must not look like a code caller on --safe-delete and --impact

For this PR, the bar is just marking, not a new count. --callers already gets this right with via="link". The two counting verbs should do the same:

  • --safe-delete (runSafeDelete, src/verbs_navigate.h): on each <c …/> caller row, append the same attribute the path/connect renderers already emit: viaEdgeAttr( edgeNameOnly( g, caller, target ), edgeIsLink( g, caller, target ) ) (see src/mcpverbs.h:4087 for the pattern).
  • --impact: on each <s …/> row, mark it via="link" when the edge that reached it is a link edge (edgeIsLink( g, parent, node ) for the hop the walk took).
  • Legends: the safe-delete and impact entries in src/compactlegend.h (and the long legend in src/graphlegend.h) should define via="link" the way the --callers legend does, so a reader knows that row is a doc link, not a call.
  • Test arm: the probe from my last comment makes a good fixture: src/app.py with def run() called by main(), docs/api.md with ## run, and docs/guide.md linking [run](api.md#run). Assert that the Run Notes row carries via="link" on both --safe-delete=run and --impact=run.

callers= and impact_reaches= will still include the link for now. That's fine for this PR. Splitting links into their own count changes a contract several verbs share, so we'll handle that separately on our side after this lands. You don't need to do it here.

3. Mark every markdown link, not only path-pinned ones

Today noteMarkdownLinkSite (src/graph.h:6363) treats a site as a link only when mdLinkPin found a file. Every other site goes into realCalls, including in-file [x](#later), [[wikilinks]] and root-relative [x](/docs/api.md). Because "a real call wins", a single unpinned link on the same pair also erases the mark from a pinned one.

The fix is to decide link-ness by where the reference came from, not by whether the pin succeeded:

  • A site is a link when r.lang == Lang::Markdown && !r.isDocLink. Note that isMarkdownLinkRef also requires !r.memberPath.empty(), which is not true for in-file anchors and wikilinks, so use the origin test directly.
  • Only non-markdown sites (real code calls) go into realCalls.
  • The stamping pass (graphHasMarkdownLink / markdownLinkBit, around src/graph.h:9187–9221) must then run whenever the tree has any markdown link, not only when mdLinkPin is non-empty.

Test arms (one small fixture covers them all):

  • [down](#later) → the Later row has via="link".
  • [[api]] → the api row has via="link".
  • [abs](/docs/api.md) → via="link".
  • A section with both [a](api.md) and [b](/docs/api.md) → still via="link".
  • "Real call wins": a pair that has both a code call and a link → the row is unmarked. This is the arm that's missing today. When I made markdownLinkBit ignore realCalls, nothing in the gate failed.

Smaller items (nice to have in this PR, fine as a follow-up if you prefer)

  • Make the vacuous negative arm real (line ~409): add a .py caller of do_work to the fixture and assert count>=1 before checking that no row says via="link".
  • Dangling anchor: when bindOneMarkdownLink falls back to the whole file with a non-empty slug, an anchor="missing" attribute (or a header count) would make the miss visible.
  • --format=columnar and the MCP callers/callees answer should carry via="link" too, the same as CLI XML and --json.
  • --quality-delta=main..HEAD: most of the 14 findings go away if the link bit and the name-only bit share one edge-kind field (a small enum) instead of two parallel bools and two near-identical helpers (linksOutAny / namesOnlyOutAny, pathHasLinkHop / pathHasNameOnlyHop).

If any of this is unclear, or you'd like a different approach for any item, just say so here and we'll work it out with you. Once 1–3 are in, we'll take another look. Thanks again for the great work on this!

… is a dot.

find_symbol and find_referencing_symbols omitted the mark. A root of `.` stored `./docs/a.md`, so the lookup missed the file.

thank you for your effort and following with me.
your input is highly appreciated and invaluable.

I was working before I got your comments. it was the via= and --json and found different behavior between running ripwire $PWD (abs. path) vs. ripwire . (vs. relative path), I'm fixing this first. so I'll do another push, then I'll reread your comments carefully and get back to you.

One question for later, not this PR: a bare --callers=parseConfig unions a function with a same-named heading (disclosed as cross_kind), so count= adds a link to a call. Headings named after functions are common in API docs, so a via="link"-style marker on link-edge rows may be worth it eventually.

@muayyad-alsadi, thank you, this is great work. I built 31e0fc4 and its parent on main and ran the same probes as last time. All three items are fixed:

  • macOS test (1): sed -i.bak plus the grep -q guard. test/mdsectioncheck.sh now passes end to end on macOS, including the warm == cold arm.
  • --safe-delete / --impact (2): with the run fixture, --safe-delete=run gives callers="2" and the Run Notes row has via="link". --impact=run and --impact --json mark it the same way, and main stays unmarked. The MCP impact answer matches.
  • Every markdown link (3): in-file #anchor, [[wikilink]], /root-relative.md, and a section that mixes a relative link with a root-relative one are all via="link" now. A code caller of the same name stays unmarked.
  • . vs absolute root: normalizing the fileByPath key is the right fix. . and an absolute root now give identical rows. I also checked that the new arm really guards it: when I removed the normalization, exactly that arm failed.

To your question about via_link_note: yes, that's the right way. It mirrors via_note for "via":"name", so an agent reading the JSON gets the same explanation the XML legend gives.

On code-only repos, the output is byte-identical to main across 23 commands on tmux. On doc-heavy repos, the only changes come from the new link edges (for example textual's graph_unresolved goes from 250 to 85), and no code row changes.

What's left, in order of importance:

  1. --quality-delta=main..HEAD still gates on 14 findings. Most of them come from the link bit and the name-only bit living side by side as two bools with twin helpers (linksOutAny / namesOnlyOutAny, pathHasLinkHop / pathHasNameOnlyHop). One small per-edge "kind" enum with a single helper would remove most of them. The rest are one extra nesting level in extractMarkdown and runCallHierarchy, and two functions that grew past the complexity bar. Each remaining finding needs either a fix or a one-line reason.
  2. The "real call wins" rule can no longer happen. That's a good thing, and it follows from your fix. Link-ness now depends on where the reference came from. An edge's from is the section the link sits in, and a markdown section only produces markdown sites. So a pair can't be both a link and a code call. When I made markdownLinkBit ignore realCalls, the gate stayed green, and now that is the expected result. I'd suggest removing realCallEdges / realCalls along with the sentence "A real call on the same pair stays unmarked" (legend, CHANGELOG, comments). That also removes the per-site inserts on trees that contain markdown links. If you see a reachable case I'm missing, an arm that fails under that mutation would settle it instead. (The new "code call to api stays unmarked" arm is still worth keeping: it checks a different pair, main → api.)
  3. The do_work negative arm (around test/mdsectioncheck.sh:414) still can't fail, because the fixture has no code caller of do_work. Adding a .py caller and asserting count>=1 before the absence check fixes that.
  4. One more arm, please: --path / --connect with a link hop, for example --path=Hub,Later on your new kinds fixture, asserting via="link" on the hop. On current main, path-hop rows are emitted by one shared function, so the rebase will touch exactly this code. This arm makes sure the mark survives the rebase.

These are fine as follow-ups if you'd rather keep this PR focused:

  • A dangling anchor ([x](api.md#removed)) still looks identical to a plain file link. A small anchor="missing" marker would make it visible and feeds directly into support markdown as a language #409 item 2.
  • --format=columnar callers, callees and impact have no via column yet. --impact --json marks the row but doesn't add via_link_note.
  • /docs/x.md links could be joined to the crawl root rather than falling back to the file-name lookup.
  • Two one-line comments: memberPath in model.h now has a markdown meaning too, and a link from a section to itself is dropped on purpose.

Rebasing onto main and renumbering kParserVer are on us. Main has moved quite a bit, and the version numbers are assigned when we merge, so please don't spend time on either. I've approved the CI run for 31e0fc4, so it's running now. We'd love to include this in our next release. If you'd like a hand with item 1 (the quality-delta cleanup) to get there sooner, just say so and we can push a commit to your branch (maintainer edits are enabled). Otherwise it's all yours.

Thanks again, it's been a pleasure working through this with you.

One more note, @muayyad-alsadi: your markdown work here directly inspired our next doc-graph step. We opened #417, "HTML as a graph". It applies the same ideas to HTML: headings become sections, id= attributes become anchors, <a href="page.html#id"> binds to its exact anchor the way your markdown links do, via="link" keeps doc links from counting as code callers, and missing anchors are disclosed. It also adds edges from markup back into code (script includes, onclick handlers, querySelector ids/classes).

#417's slice B, anchored links, is essentially "#414 for HTML", and it's yours if you want it once this lands. Either way, thank you again. This PR set the pattern the next contributors will copy, and we're really grateful for the care you've put into it.

@muayyad-alsadi, the CI run for 31e0fc4 has finished. I see you have already pushed 6f3ffe4 with the anchor="missing" marker, thank you! Unless that commit already covers them, the items below still apply. Most of the red comes from one cause, so it is quicker to fix than the list looks.

From the PR (please look at these):

  • Golden and pin gates (about 11 of the red ones). test/fixture has two [[wikilink]] edges (notes and related). They now print via="link" and the map gains the new legend comment, which is the intended change. So test/golden.xml and the pins built on it need a re-bless: UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 test/regression.sh, then UPDATE_GOLDEN=1 bash test/printffmtparitycheck.sh. Please check that the diff is only the two via="link" attributes, the new comment and est_tokens. test/compactlegendfix/pre_l1_full/map.xml is re-anchored by hand (the log at the top of that block in compactlegendcheck.sh shows how).
  • langidentitycheck: 352 > 346. The PR adds six Lang::Markdown comparisons in graph.h. Please don't raise the ceiling. A LangFacts column (say linkSections, set on the Markdown row, read through langFacts( r.lang )) takes all six back out.
  • gateexitcheck G2. test/mdsectioncheck.sh:511 reports its verdict as ... && ok ... || no ... on one line. An if ...; then ok ...; else no ...; fi fixes it.
  • compactlegendcheck legend pins. The three new via=link readings add about 68 B to the compact legends of map-diff, pack-signatures, metrics, query and pack-top-n, so their pins trip. The sentence we suggested deleting ("A real call on the same pair...") helps here. Then re-measure and re-pin with a one-line reason.
  • pack-signatures / pack-top-n rows differ between full and compact. I think it is the via="link" legend comment that pack writes after the rows, but I have not confirmed it. Writing it where the via="name" comment goes should make the two dialects match.

Ours, at the rebase and merge (no need to chase them): the qschemetrip hash (we renumber kParserVer anyway) and the showcase capture seed and legend-dict figure. Those are regenerated when we merge.

These all fail the same way on every Linux and macOS leg, and main is green, so none of it is a flake or something you broke by accident. If the golden and pin re-bless is a hassle, say so and we'll push it to your branch. Thanks again, this is close.

@muayyad-alsadi, a quick heads-up so we don't duplicate work: the branch now conflicts with main, and GitHub doesn't start the CI run for a PR while it has conflicts (that's why 6f3ffe4 has no run yet). So we'll take the mechanical part off your plate tonight, as offered:

  1. Merge main into your branch (a merge commit, not a rebase or force-push, so your local checkout keeps working; just pull before your next push). This includes keeping via="link" on the path-hop rows, which moved into one shared function on main.
  2. Re-bless the golden files and pins for the two [[wikilink]] edges in test/fixture, after checking that the diff is only the intended via="link" attributes, the legend comment and est_tokens.
  3. The one-line verdict at test/mdsectioncheck.sh:511 (gateexitcheck G2) and the compact-legend re-pins.

That leaves the design pieces with you, if you'd like them: the LangFacts column for the six Lang::Markdown comparisons, and the quality-delta cleanup. We'll post here when the push is up and CI is running. Thank you again!

sure, I'll wait your merge.
my last push 4438031 to my branch. It adds the LangFacts column for the six markdown comparisons. The same commit also re-pins the golden, the printf hashes, and the compact legend sizes, and it rewrites the one-line verdict.

Train 30 lowered the shared Lang:: ceiling to 339, so the column still belongs on this branch. I will score quality-delta against main again after the pull.

Brings the branch up to date with main so CI can run on it. A merge, not a
rebase, so the author's checkout keeps working.

Conflicts, resolved to keep both sides:
- kParserVer: renumbered again at merge to 206 (rich file tag 207), above
  every live number (main 196, train 31 198, lanes 202 and 204), with the
  quality.h mirror. kCacheVersion stays main's 36.
- --path and MCP path_between: main moved the hop rows into one shared
  emitter (rw::emitPathHopRows in defattrib.h). The link and anchor marks
  now live there, so both transports keep via="link" and anchor="missing".
  The branch's separate MCP row loop is dropped, and both legends keep
  main's path-owner clause beside the link and anchor clauses.
- --callers/--callees JSON and the impact legend: main's pattern_dispatch
  counts and legend are carried into the helpers this branch split out.
- ImpactView keeps both seeds (this branch) and patternSites (main).
- compactlegendcheck: both re-anchor notes are kept.

…hemetrip

The merge renumbered kParserVer (and quality.h's mirror) to 206, rich file
tag 207, above every live number: main 196, train 31 198, and the branch
reservations 202 and 204. The PR's own 185 is below main's 196, so it had
to move. qschemetripcheck watches those lines; the only watched text that
moved is the version, so the hash is re-pinned with a log line.
kCacheVersion stays 36. The CHANGELOG versions note says 206 where it
said 196.

@muayyad-alsadi, the merge is up, and CI is finally running (no more conflicts). You were faster than us: by the time we started you had already pushed the golden re-bless, the :511 if/else, the compact pins and the LangFacts column (4438031c), plus the one-byte edge-kind fold (d9153624). Thank you, that's exactly the shape we hoped for.

What we pushed on top, as a fast-forward of your branch (no force-push; please git pull before your next push):

  • 30b4fe09 merges main (939dbb6). Five conflicts, both sides kept. One needed care: main moved the path-hop rows into one shared function (rw::emitPathHopRows), so the link and anchor marks now live inside it. --path, --connect and MCP path_between all print via="link" on your kinds fixture, and your two arms pass. That made the separate MCP row loop redundant, so it's gone.
  • 3a3f0a61 bumps kParserVer to 206 (above every live branch) and re-pins qschemetrip. We renumber once more at merge time, so please don't spend time on version numbers.

After the merge, test/golden.xml is byte-identical, and the default map's diff against main is only your two via="link" attributes, the legend comment and est_tokens. On a code-only repo (tmux), output is identical to main across 23 commands.

One red you can ignore: showcasecapturecheck (H)/(I) wants the showcase capture regenerated, and the capture script can't run across a merge commit. We regenerate it on main when this lands.

What's still yours, if you'd like it: the remaining --quality-delta findings, plus the optional follow-ups from the earlier list. Thanks again, this has been a pleasure.

@muayyad-alsadi, thank you for "all done". We checked the new head end to end.

What you closed since the last round, all checked on the head binary:

  • Quality-delta against main is now clean. The gate count went from 14 to 0, and the kind-byte fold (one byte per edge for call, name-only and link) is the shape we hoped for.
  • The Python caller of do_work makes that test arm real, so it can no longer pass on an empty answer.
  • The unreachable "real call wins" state is gone, and so is the sentence about it in the legend and the CHANGELOG.
  • --path and --connect carry via="link", with arms that check the row and not the legend text.
  • The last commit (folding the section-end walk into the section index) is a clean refactor.

One thing we want to fix before the 0.6.8 tag, and we are pushing it ourselves now on top of your branch, the way we did last time (no force-push; please hold off on pushes until it lands so we don't race). The same push merges the latest main, which moved when the previous integration batch landed: anchor="missing" fires on links whose heading does exist. A heading with non-ASCII letters (## Überblick, ## 概要), GitHub's -1 duplicate suffix (#dup-1), a percent-encoded slug (#real%20heading), and a file that is only one heading line all fall back to the file node, as the CHANGELOG says. The new mark now turns that fallback into a statement that the heading is absent. That was our suggestion in the review, so the missing guard is on us. The fix is small: skip the mark for those shapes, plus an arm for each.

What we take as follow-ups, none of which needs anything from you:

  • Regenerate the showcase capture and the --legend-dict figure once this lands on main (two checks in showcasecapturecheck are red on this branch for a history-shape reason, not your change).
  • Lower the shared Lang:: ceiling from 339 to 338, which your LangFacts column made possible.
  • Delete two helpers that are no longer called (graphHasMarkdownLink, linkOutPtr), and tidy a few long parameter lists the fold left behind (for example emitCallHierarchyAlt).
  • The separate links= count card, and an anchor-miss column for --format=columnar.

CI on your last head finished with two reds, neither from your change: the showcase capture checks (history shape, as above) and a 30-second timeout in the ASan job on a gate that does not touch markdown (runner load; the same step failed on another branch at the same hour). Our push will start a fresh run.

Thank you for taking this from the first heading-binding idea to a link mark across every verb, and for being so quick to reply to every round. We will credit you by name in the CHANGELOG entry and the release notes.

… branch

Ten files conflicted; none needed a design choice, only carrying main's new
behaviour into the helpers this branch had extracted:
- verbs_navigate.h: emitCallHierarchyAlt takes main's closure blocks (<in>,
  closures=) and the callees page next= / expand_next=; emitImpactLegend and
  ImpactView take main's <dc> rows (declined sites); --path keeps the shared
  emitPathHopRows (link and anchor marks) and gains main's bridge and
  near-sink rows.
- mcpverbs.h: symbolQueryNextField now holds main's callees page next=;
  path_between gains the bridge and near-sink rows beside the link legend.
- serialize.h: the pack hops sink keeps main's row cap and next= beside the
  branch's link bits.
- langfacts.h: both columns (linkSections, noNestedNamedFunctions).
- kParserVer stays 206 (rich 207), strictly above main's 198 (199); the
  versions note in the CHANGELOG now names main's 198. qschemetrip re-pinned.

The mark said a link named a heading the file does not have, but the slug
function is ASCII-only and a file that is one heading line has its heading as
the file node, so it also fired on headings that exist: a non-ASCII slug
(#überblick, #概要), a percent-encoded one (#real%20heading, #%C3%BCberblick),
GitHub's duplicate suffix (#dup-1 for a second ## Dup), and one.md#title for a
file that is just `# Title`. Those keep the file edge and carry no mark. A plain
ASCII slug that no heading has is still marked.

Nine arms in test/mdsectioncheck.sh: six unmarked (each fails on 2254f8e) and
three that keep the mark.

again, which hashes to the value the branch pinned before the merge. RE-PIN LOG

@muayyad-alsadi, the fix is in and this is ready.

What we pushed on top of your branch (fast-forward, no force-push):

  • 18565fd merges the latest main, which moved when the previous integration batch landed. All conflicts were mechanical, and main's new rows were carried into your extracted helpers.
  • cddf0f0 marks anchor="missing" only when the heading is provably absent. There is no mark for non-ASCII or percent-encoded slugs, for a -N duplicate suffix whose stem exists, or for a file that is a single heading line. Nine new test arms: six fail on 2254f8e and pass now, and three keep the mark on plain missing slugs.
  • 5f3f83d re-pins the schema trip hash after the merge.
  • e1a9d7f spells the out-of-model slug test without a second ASCII scan, so quality-delta stays at zero.

The earlier CodeRabbit thread on the cache (bound refs stored before saveCache) is resolved: binding now happens at graph build.

How it lands: the 0.6.8 release PR (#419) already contains this exact head (e1a9d7f), together with the regenerated showcase capture that the showcasecapturecheck red on this PR is about. Merging #419 brings your commits into main with your authorship, and GitHub will mark this PR as merged. The 0.6.8 CHANGELOG, README and release notes credit you by name for markdown section links.

Follow-ups we take, nothing needed from you: deleting the two helpers that are no longer called, tidying the long parameter lists, a links= count, and an anchor-miss column in --format=columnar.

Thank you again. It was a pleasure working on this with you.
