Closes #355 (slice 5a of #354). Clojure's defining-head and special-form tables stay with #389, as agreed in the issue, and can drop onto this evaluator.

What changed

One predicate walk, three readers. src/infra/tspredicates.h (new) holds the step-group walk (forEachPredicate) and the string predicates decided on it: #eq?, #not-eq?, #any-of?, #not-any-of?.

  • passesPredicates (--match/--lint) and buildPredicateRegexTable now share that walk, so they can't disagree about which steps they consume.
  • As a side effect, #any-of? and #not-any-of? now filter in --match too. Before, they were ignored and matched everything (arms B4 and B5).
  • Nothing is allocated per match: the operator, the string arguments and the capture text are all views.
  • queryString keeps the two-statement form from the sequencing note in passesPredicates.

The tags pass runs string predicates only. captureTagsFacts and ElixirContext::prepare skip a match whose string predicates fail, before any capture is read or counted.

  • #match?/#not-match? stay out of the tags pass, per the cost note at the top of ingest_astquery.h.
  • An operator the tags pass doesn't decide filters nothing, as before, and arm A1 refuses any tags.scm that uses one.

Elixir's two tables are now queries/elixir/tags.scm data.

  • Definition keywords. elixirFunctionKeyword is deleted. Both keyword-headed @definition.function patterns carry (#any-of? @_keyword "def" "defp" "defmacro" "defmacrop" "defguard" "defguardp" "defdelegate") and (#not-any-of? @name "unquote" "when"). The call site in ingest_sidecap.h reads the match's own @_keyword capture instead of re-testing the target text.
  • Metadata attributes. elixirMetadataAttribute's list is now (#not-any-of? @_attribute "doc" "moduledoc" ...) on @definition.attribute. The five typed attributes (@type, @callback, ...) stay a C++ kind decision in elixirTypedAttribute, since they pick the symbol kind and its display name, not whether a match exists.
  • One copy of each list. The tree walks that recognise the same heads outside a match (an enclosing def, a reference inside @spec) read both lists back from the compiled query with predicateStrings.
  • Clones. ripwire src --clones no longer lists group 71 (elixirFunctionKeyword at 0.82 and elixirMetadataAttribute at 0.96 against macroBodyKeyword). 214 groups become 213.

Comments and docs. The "the tags pass does not evaluate predicates" notes now say "did not, before #355". They're in 7 tags.scm files plus ingest_names.h and ingest_importcap.h. CONTRIBUTING's known-gap paragraph becomes "Keyword heads are data", and row 5 of the table is updated. The gate count is regenerated with docs/gatecount_build.py (702).

kParserVer

I bumped kParserVer and kIngestParserVerMirror together to 216. That's a placeholder strictly above every live number I could see: main 206/207, #424 212/213 and #420 214/215. I also re-pinned test/qschemetrip.hash, as the gate instructs after a kParserVer move.

@joyful-ii-V-I, which number should I use? I'll renumber as soon as you reserve one.

Evidence

New gate test/tagspredicatecheck.sh, red on main first. It is registered in regression.sh between swiftshapecheck and taskechocheck, with one tiny fixture per predicate in test/tagspredicatefix/.

main 27eddee1:
PASS A1 every tags.scm predicate is one the tags pass evaluates
  FAIL A2 queries/elixir/tags.scm has no (#any-of? @_keyword ...) list
  FAIL A3 queries/elixir/tags.scm has 0 (#not-any-of? @_attribute ...) lists, want exactly 1
FAIL B7 a string where a def's name belongs became a definition: ['"not a name"']
  PASS B3 (#eq? @n "keep_one"): hits=1
  FAIL B4 (#any-of? @n "keep_one" "keep_two"): hits=3, want 2
  FAIL B5 (#not-any-of? @n "keep_one" "keep_two"): hits=3, want 1
head:
PASS A1 every tags.scm predicate is one the tags pass evaluates
PASS A2 Elixir's definition keywords live only in queries/elixir/tags.scm
PASS A3 Elixir's metadata attribute names live only in queries/elixir/tags.scm
PASS B1 #any-of? keeps every keyword head and no ordinary call; B2 #not-any-of? drops unquote heads; B6 drops metadata attributes; B7 keeps test titles, drops def "string"
  PASS B3 (#eq? @n "keep_one"): hits=1
  PASS B4 (#any-of? @n "keep_one" "keep_two"): hits=2
  PASS B5 (#not-any-of? @n "keep_one" "keep_two"): hits=1
ALL PASS

B1, B2 and B6 also hold on main, because the C++ tables made the same decisions there. They pin that nothing was lost when the tables moved.

Byte identity. bash test/langidentitycheck.sh <main 27eddee1> ./build/ripwire --jobs=7 --repo=ex:plug --repo=ex:phoenix --repo=go:cobra:

PASS 1274 argv over 34 corpora: 1274 SAME (374 with zero rows in both), 0 DIFF (0 intended), 0 EMPTY, 0 ERROR
  PASS  ratchet: shared-file "== Lang::" predicates 338 (ceiling 339) -- lower the ceiling in ratchet.tsv to 338

The real repos were elixir-plug/plug @ 6955eb3 and phoenixframework/phoenix @ e5880ef for Elixir, and spf13/cobra @ adbc881 for Go, a language this change doesn't touch.

On the ratchet: it reads 338 on main as well. The Elixir logic that moved lived in ingest_elixir.h, a per-language file the ratchet doesn't count, so the number doesn't fall. I left the ceiling alone because that slack isn't from this change. I'm happy to lower it to 338 here if you'd like.

The one intended output change, pinned by arm B7: invalid Elixir def "not a name" do ... end used to be indexed by the C++ table as a function "not a name"/0. Now it defines nothing, because the string-title pattern carries no @_keyword. ExUnit's test "title" do is unchanged. None of the 34 corpora contains that form, which is why the run above reads 0 DIFF.

Other gates (dev build, no build type), all green:

  • Elixir: elixircheck, elixirsemanticcheck, elixirnamearitycheck, eliximportcheck.
  • Predicates and queries: astqueryregexcheck, matchcapturecheck, matchgrammarcheck.
  • Gate hygiene: gateexitcheck (G1 contract), manifestcheck.
  • Parser version: qextractionkeycheck, qschemetripcheck.
  • Gate count: docs/gatecount_build.py --check.

Full suite (python3 test/pargates.py . ./build/ripwire, 717 gates, on a Linux box running as root): 707 green.

  • The first pass at -j 14 had 48 failures. 38 of them are green on a second look:

    • 21 probe compiles had picked up the box's default c++, gcc 11, which has no <format>. They pass with c++ set to g++-13, the build compiler.
    • All 8 timeouts pass with less load.
    • clojurecheck passes once ripgrep is installed.
    • Six unit arms read CMakeFiles/ripwire.dir/flags.make, which my Ninja tree doesn't have. They pass on a Makefile-generator build: decltodefcheck, extentcheck, includeprecisecheck, jsonwalkcheck, macroreparsecheck, sarifcheck.
    • infraportcheck (C) caught the project name in a comment of the new src/infra/tspredicates.h. Fixed.
    • ripwirepubliccheck arm 7 sweeps git ls-files, so it can't see the new header before the commit. It passes on a scratch clone with the change staged.
  • The other 10 fail the same way on main 27eddee, rerun side by side with the same settings:

    • binoverridecheck, doctorcheck, qualitystalecheck, savecachecheck and skillevalcheck, whose unwritable or read-only probes can't fail as root. binoverridecheck's false-green is editplanrollbackmsgcheck skipping as root.
    • landingcheck, mapinventorycheck, memguardcheck, optremarkscheck and regexguardcheck.

I'll look at any of those if CI disagrees.

  • binoverridecheck and gateexitcheck both see the new gate. It goes red against the failing stub, and its ok() meets the G1 contract.

Sanitizers and output shape.

  • asan/ was rebuilt at the final tree, and tagspredicatecheck passes on it.
  • LSAN_OPTIONS=suppressions=lsan_suppressions.txt ./asan/ripwire exits 0 with no reports on test/tagspredicatefix/ex, test/elixirfix, plug, phoenix and this repo.
  • Determinism (two runs, cmp) and xmllint --noout pass on plug, phoenix and this repo.

📝 Walkthrough

The tags pass now evaluates supported string predicates. Elixir keyword and metadata lists are declared in tags.scm and used during extraction. The changes also add regression coverage, update parser-version values, and revise related documentation and comments.

Changes: Tree-sitter tags predicate evaluation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared predicate evaluation and tags-pass integration
src/infra/tspredicates.h, src/ingest_astquery.h, src/ingest.cpp, src/ingest_sidecap.h
Shared helpers group and evaluate eq?, not-eq?, any-of?, and not-any-of? predicates. The tags pass uses them to reject matches that fail string predicates before processing captures.
Elixir query-driven keyword filtering
queries/elixir/tags.scm, src/ingest_elixir.h, src/ingest_sidecap.h
Elixir query patterns declare definition-keyword allowlists and metadata-attribute exclusions. Elixir extraction reads these lists from the query and uses them when filtering matches and classifying definitions.
Regression coverage, versioning, and supporting records
test/regression.sh, test/tagspredicatecheck.sh, src/ingest_cache.h, src/quality.h, CONTRIBUTING.md, README.md, docs/EVALS.md, present/deck5_ripwire_build.js, queries/*/tags.scm, src/ingest_importcap.h, src/ingest_names.h
The regression suite includes checks for supported predicates and Elixir extraction. Both parser-version values increase from 206 to 216. Gate counts and predicate-related guidance and comments are updated.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #355. The shared predicate helpers, tags-pass evaluation, Elixir query data, regression gate, parser-version invalidation, tests, and documentation support the requested predicate evaluation and keyword-table migration. The deferred Clojure, macroBodyKeyword, Ruby, and typed-attribute work is not included. No unrelated implementation change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #355 requires the joint kParserVer and kIngestParserVerMirror bump to a number reserved by a maintainer. The PR sets both values to 216 but identifies 216 as a placeholder pending reservation. The shared string-predicate walk, tags-pass filtering, Elixir query migration, red-first gate, and reported byte-identity checks address the other coding requirements. The excluded hash and fixture files prevent direct inspection, but the PR summary reports their required updates and test results.

Resolution

Obtain a maintainer-reserved parser version, update both kParserVer and kIngestParserVerMirror to that value, and regenerate or repin the required parser-version test artifact.

Use the maintainer-reserved parser version before merge.

216 is explicitly a placeholder. Replace it with the reserved number and keep quality::kIngestParserVerMirror equal to kParserVer. If another build reuses both the parser and cache versions for different extraction results, the cache checks can accept that cache.

Fail the gate when a Python check cannot run.

If python3 is unavailable, this command substitution produces an empty bad value. A1 then reports PASS. A2, A3, and the Elixir output check also treat empty results as PASS, so the gate can report ALL PASS while none of those checks ran. Check each Python command’s exit status before interpreting its output.

Scan the full predicate operator name.

The regular expression omits underscores. For example, it does not report (#foo_bar? @name "x"), so A1 accepts an unsupported predicate that the tags pass will not evaluate. Tree-sitter permits application-defined predicates; scan their complete operator names before applying the allowlist. (github.com)
