Had A Crash

I don't think this is a bug report. Pcbasic crashed and generated a log and I couldn't remember where to send it! I've been using pcbasic for a couple of years now. I love it! This is my first crash. I wasn't doing anything too complex, just heapsorting an array of strings. This program ran previously and subsequently without crashing, so IDK. This was a freshly downloaded pcbasic, so I think the latest version. It was running on an Ubuntu flavor called Zorin.

A crash is always a bug, and from the log I can see that this is indeed the latest version.

The question is, can we reproduce it to investigate? From what you write you've seen this issue once but running the same thing later did not crash, which is unfortunate (from the point of view of investigating it).

• Can you recall doing anything different the time it crashed? Not sure what it could be, so any even trivial detail might help.
• Are you able to share your input file (the NAMES.TXT file? I have the program from the log, with the input I could try and see if I can make it crash on my side. I could create my own but the closer we stay to what made it crash the better.

Hi Rob! Say, while I have you here, Let me just say I love pcbasic and it has provided me many happy hours of hobby coding. Anyways, yes I will forward the file I used. As to your first question, i had just spent a couple of hours installing a bunch of software from the Zorin software store. The Zorin was freshly updated and upgraded, but I hadn't restarted the computer since all those different installations. I have run this program many times as i wrote and debugged different parts. And sometimes just for my own satisfaction, once I got challenging parts running. Anyway, don't laugh at my ridiculous code, Rob! haha This program is just a demonstrator for some sorting methods, I'm sure you could tell. Be aware that it will write several .TXT files to whatever directory you are using. Thanks for everything! Mike P.S. did you know QB64PE will compile pcbasic? Some things have to be changed, such as file handling, but the nuts and bolts, lower common denominator code compiles and runs oh so very fast

I'm wondering why there is a garbage collection triggered by that BASIC line? Isn't assigning one string to another just copying the string descriptor, i.e. address and length from the existing source string to the position in the target array?

Hi, unfortunately I can't reproduce this bug - when I try to run the program with this text file it completes without any crash. Perhaps the crash would occur with a different names file (maybe longer? it is hard to say).

That said, this issue does sound familiar to the crash in #251 in that garbage collection and a detached string are involved; it is possible that they have the same root cause. Hypothesis is that something goes wrong in the mapping of string pointers during/after garage collection.

No, because that would mean both are references to the same string, and afterwards an in-place change to one (with LSET, RSET, or MID$) would affect the other. That is the behaviour for FIELD strings, but not regular strings as used here.
