Supply-chain hardening for the engine download, ahead of 0.10.0.

Changes

Verified iii engine download (CLI)

  • src/cli/engine-install.ts pins the SHA-256 of every iii v0.22.1 release archive the CLI knows about (macOS arm64/x64, Linux x64/arm64/armv7, Windows x64/arm64). The hashes were checked three ways: the release's .sha256 assets, the digests GitHub reports for the assets, and a local shasum -a 256 of the downloaded archives.
  • The auto-installer now downloads the archive, verifies it in Node, and only then extracts it. On a mismatch it deletes the download, installs nothing and prints the manual install command.
  • A version or platform without a pinned hash (for example AGENTMEMORY_III_VERSION set to another release) is not auto-installed; the CLI prints the manual command and points at the matching .sha256 file.
  • The manual install command (printed on failure and in the "needs iii-engine" instructions) checks the hash with sha256sum/shasum before tar. The Windows instructions show the expected Get-FileHash value.
  • The download and extract scripts are fixed strings; the URL and paths are passed as positional shell arguments instead of being interpolated into the script text.
  • README manual install and the eval sandbox hint verify the hash before extracting.
  • Tests: match, mismatch, unknown platform/version (no download attempted), timeout cleanup, shell-syntax in the install path, and the manual command refusing a bad hash.

Refreshing the hashes

  • npm run engine:hashes [version] downloads each archive, checks it against the release's published .sha256, and rewrites the III_RELEASE_SHA256 table. Without an argument it uses III_PINNED_VERSION. Run against 0.22.1 it reproduces the committed table exactly.
  • An engine bump is: change III_PINNED_VERSION, run npm run engine:hashes, commit. A test fails if the pinned version has no entry.

CI workflow

  • ci.yml declares permissions: contents: read. Actions stay on their version tags.
  • publish.yml is unchanged.

Docker

  • Base images stay on version tags so they keep receiving upstream security patches.
  • The four deploy Dockerfiles run iii --version after copying the binary from iiidev/iii:${III_VERSION} and stop with a clear message if it is not III_VERSION.

Interaction with other PRs

Not covered

  • The deploy Dockerfiles were not built locally because no Docker daemon was available. Please run one image build (for example docker build deploy/fly) before merging.
  • Translated READMEs still show the unverified curl | tar one-liner; the English README has the verified version.
  • The install.iii.dev script that agentmemory suggests as an alternative is outside this repo.

Gate

  • npm run build, npm run skills:gen (no drift), npm run skills:check
  • npx vitest run --exclude test/integration.test.ts: 2281 passed, 1 skipped
  • npx tsc --noEmit: 28 errors, all already on main

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • iii-engine installation now verifies the archive’s pinned SHA-256 checksum before extraction and rejects archives with missing or mismatched checksums.
    • Installation guidance now includes checksum verification steps for manual downloads across supported platforms.
    • Docker image builds now report an error when the bundled iii-engine version does not match the configured version.

The automatic engine installer now downloads the release archive, checks
its SHA-256 against a hash pinned in the CLI for each platform of iii
v0.22.1, and only then extracts it. A mismatch deletes the download and
prints the manual install command, which also verifies the hash before
extracting. A version or platform without a pinned hash is not
auto-installed.

The hashes match the .sha256 assets of the iii-hq/iii v0.22.1 release
and the archives themselves.
actions/checkout and actions/setup-node now reference the commit behind
the v6 tag they already used, with the version kept next to the pin so
Dependabot can update it. The CI workflow declares contents: read.
The deploy Dockerfiles pin node:22-slim and the iiidev/iii image by
digest. The iii image digest is a build argument next to III_VERSION,
and the build stops with a clear message when the binary in the pinned
image is not III_VERSION, so the two are overridden together. The
busybox init container in docker-compose.yml is pinned the same way.
The download and extract scripts are now fixed strings, and the release
URL, install directory, archive and binary paths reach them as
positional arguments, so a home directory containing shell syntax is
never evaluated.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI now verifies pinned SHA-256 checksums before extracting iii-engine archives. Installation guidance includes checksum verification, and deployment Dockerfiles check the installed binary version during builds.

Changes

iii-Engine Artifact Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned checksum data and update script
src/cli/engine-install.ts, scripts/engine-hashes.mjs, package.json
The installer defines checksums for seven release assets. The new script fetches published checksums, verifies them against the archives, and updates the checksum table.
Verified archive installation and tests
src/cli/engine-install.ts, test/engine-install.test.ts
The installer requires a pinned checksum, downloads and hashes the archive, and extracts it only after a match. Tests cover success, failure outcomes, cleanup, and shell-path handling.
CLI and manual installation instructions
src/cli.ts, README.md, eval/scripts/sandbox.sh
The CLI uses the archive installer and provides checksum details in manual instructions. The README and sandbox instructions verify archives before extraction.
Deployment version checks and CI permission
deploy/*/Dockerfile, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Deployment Dockerfiles check that the binary version contains III_VERSION and fail the build otherwise. The CI workflow sets contents: read permissions.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa449

Two small issues remain. The deploy version check could accept a similar but different release. The hash refresh script can delete the default version's pinned checksums when run for another version. Both are easy to fix and do not block the core checksum verification.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa449

Checksum verification strengthens engine installation, and CI credentials are restricted. The CI actions still use mutable tags despite the stated pinning goal, but that exposure predates this change. No newly introduced security finding was established; incomplete policy, recovery, and deployment evidence prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined installation path writes and starts the engine under the invoking CLI user's authority in the user's home directory. CI executes pull-request-controlled installation, build, and test commands, but the workflow declares read-only repository permission and contains no explicit deployment, secret, or artifact-publication step. External permission settings and referenced action internals remain outside this assessment.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The deferred CI candidate does not establish an introduced or worsened attack path. Mutable action references predate this PR, while the changed permission declaration restricts authority. Whether an external policy requires immutable pins remains unresolved and is not itself evidence of a vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Downloaded archive bytes must match a checksum embedded in the package before automatic extraction. This control trusts the packaged checksum catalog and local filesystem ownership; it does not independently authenticate an already-installed engine or a manually supplied binary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Verification and extraction separately open the fixed .iii-download.tar.gz pathname, and extraction writes directly into the destination directory without locking or atomic publication. Concurrent mutation or interrupted extraction therefore lacks an established transaction guarantee. Because the destination is user-owned, the evidence does not establish new attacker authority; interrupted and concurrent recovery remain coverage limitations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use private per-install staging, preserve verified archive identity through extraction, and publish the completed binary atomically under a destination lock. This would strengthen integrity and recovery under concurrent or interrupted installs; it is a hardening proposal, not a verified exploit finding.

The version guard accepts substring matches instead of requiring an exact version. For example, III_VERSION=0.11.2 matches output containing 0.11.20, so a digest for a different release can pass the guard. Parse the reported version and compare it exactly.

  • deploy/coolify/Dockerfile#L17-L18: replace the substring search with an exact parsed-version comparison.

Digest-pinned base images stop picking up the security patches published
under node:22-slim and busybox:1.36 until someone bumps the digest, and
the CI workflow runs with read-only permissions and no secrets, so SHA
pins on its actions add upkeep without protecting anything that matters.
Actions and images go back to version tags. The CI workflow keeps
contents: read, and the deploy Dockerfiles keep the check that the iii
binary copied from iiidev/iii matches III_VERSION.
npm run engine:hashes [version] downloads every iii release archive the
CLI installs, checks each against the .sha256 file published with the
release, and rewrites the III_RELEASE_SHA256 table in
src/cli/engine-install.ts. Without an argument it uses III_PINNED_VERSION.
An engine bump becomes: change III_PINNED_VERSION, run the script, commit.

Preserve checksum entries for other versions.

When a maintainer supplies a different version, this replacement deletes the 0.22.1 entries while III_PINNED_VERSION remains 0.22.1. The installer then returns no-checksum and refuses automatic installation for the default version.

Update only the selected version's entry. Preserve the other entries.
