Upgrade AgentMemory from iii 0.22.1 to 0.25.0 with Worker Compose, iii-sdk/helpers 0.25.0, and pinned state@0.22.20 and http@0.22.7 workers. Preserve the existing state store and Docker volume; retain the startup, shutdown, recovery and deployment fixes in this PR.

  • Synchronize engine pins across the installer, deployment templates, agent instructions, Python examples and translated docs. Verify all seven published engine archive checksums.
  • Serve authenticated viewer updates over SSE. Replace the retired engine console launcher and website instructions with migration guidance; document ADE's port conflict with the AgentMemory viewer.
  • Add built-CLI console and pin-consistency regressions, and make startup and graph readiness fixtures deterministic.

Compatibility changes: AGENTMEMORY_USE_DOCKER, AGENTMEMORY_III_CONFIG and bundled legacy engine configs are removed; self-hosting uses deploy/Dockerfile. Status reports service.enginePinnedVersion, port 3112 is retired, and agentmemory console prints guidance. See the upgrade guide.

Validation on 0.25.0: 3,810 tests passed, 3 skipped; evaluation typecheck and 22 tests passed; all 10 packed release scenarios, 15 vector recovery checks, four summary recovery checks and 18 graph migration checks passed. All 17 startup scenarios passed across the full and focused reruns. Real Pi, oh-my-pi and DSH hosts passed capture/recall checks. Docker preserved memory through state-worker failure and container restart. Authenticated live SSE and the built website were checked. Native Windows execution was not tested locally. Hosted Node 20/22/24/26 tests and both complete Linux/macOS packaged release gates passed at 3e667b4.

Pin the SDK helpers and runtime installer to the supported 0.24.6 engine release so local installations agree with the worker runtime.

Replace the removed stream relay with an SSE endpoint owned by the worker, keeping viewer updates and proxy requests on the REST port.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Generate an isolated Compose project per instance and supervise the pinned engine plus registry workers. Remove the CLI Docker/config-file lifecycle and surface actionable registry failures and legacy Docker recovery guidance.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Drop lifecycle regression cases that only exercised unregistered durable subscribers; the worker no longer has publishers for those topics.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Rename the status field to enginePinnedVersion so clients do not mistake the configured version pin for a live engine-version probe; align the report with the removed stream port.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Run the pinned engine and registry workers under Docker while keeping platform templates aligned with the same persistent, supervised Compose project.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Update installation guidance and deployment references for the Compose-managed 0.24 runtime, including its ports and removed legacy configuration options.

Co-authored-by: iii harness (claude-opus-5-5) <noreply@iii.dev>
Refresh the checked-in plugin bundles after updating the credential-scrubbing and explicit-credential handling in their sources.

Walkthrough

The pull request replaces managed Docker startup with per-instance Worker Compose. It removes the separate stream transport and moves viewer live updates to authenticated SSE over REST. Deployment files, configuration, tests, and documentation now use the new runtime, ports, secrets, and pinned versions.

Changes: Worker Compose runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compose lifecycle and project generation
src/cli.ts, src/cli/compose-control.ts, src/cli/compose-project.ts, scripts/release-gate/*
The CLI now generates and manages per-instance Worker Compose projects with pinned workers, persisted state, readiness checks, diagnostics, reconciliation, and verified shutdown.
Deployment runtime
deploy/Dockerfile, deploy/runtime/*, docker-compose.yml, deploy/*/docker-compose.yml
Shared Docker and Compose deployment paths now use Worker Compose, persistent /data, REST and viewer ports, and protected viewer configuration. Legacy platform-specific images and entrypoints were removed.
Viewer SSE transport
src/viewer/*, src/triggers/*, src/health/*, src/functions/*
Viewer events now use an authenticated SSE endpoint and bounded live-event hub. The stream relay, viewer-stream tracker, and stream-port configuration were removed.
Configuration and compatibility
src/config.ts, src/types.ts, src/version.ts, src/secret-store.ts, plugin/*, package.json
Configuration now supports independent data and environment-file overrides, reports live-event metrics, removes stream settings, handles legacy secret paths, and pins iii dependencies to 0.24.6.
Validation and documentation
test/*, README.md, INSTALL_FOR_AGENTS.md, READMEs/*
Tests, release-gate scenarios, deployment guides, installation guidance, and localized project metrics now reflect Worker Compose, SSE, authentication, updated ports, and pinned versions.

🟠 Major · Propagate the resolved data directory to local clients. · secret-store.ts:17-22

src/secret-store.ts:17-22
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Propagate the resolved data directory to local clients.

On macOS and Linux, a default CLI start uses ~/Library/Application Support/agentmemory or ~/.local/share/agentmemory, while the generated hooks and MCP clients fall back to ~/.agentmemory. The Compose worker therefore generates or reads its secret from a different path.

The connect-generated MCP block does not set AGENTMEMORY_DATA_DIR, and the OpenCode adapter writes no environment block. On a fresh default install, these clients send no matching bearer token to /agentmemory/mcp/*, whose checkAuth guard returns 401. Pass the resolved data directory to every generated hook and MCP process, or make their fallback resolver use the same platform-default logic. Regenerate the bundled scripts after changing the source resolver.

🟡 Minor · The "Engine config" section documents removed features. · REFERENCE.md:87-96

plugin/skills/agentmemory-config/REFERENCE.md:87-96
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The "Engine config" section documents removed features.

The generated list drops AGENTMEMORY_III_CONFIG. Lines 87-89 still tell agents to set AGENTMEMORY_III_CONFIG and to use the packaged iii-config.docker.yaml. That config lookup is removed, and the file is no longer packaged. Lines 94-96 still describe engine pub/sub for live viewer events and require one Redis server per instance. The README now says live events use SSE and that a separate database is enough. Replace these sections with the Worker Compose and AGENTMEMORY_WORKER_BIN_DIR model.

AGENTMEMORY_WORKER_ENV_ALLOWLIST (Line 82) is a TypeScript constant in src/cli/compose-project.ts, not an environment variable. The generator should exclude it.

The Architecture section still pins iii 0.22.1.

Line 7 says "iii-sdk 0.22.1 with @iii-dev/helpers 0.22.1 (WebSocket to iii-engine 0.22.1...)". This PR moves to 0.24.6 with Worker Compose and registry workers state@0.22.20 and http@0.22.7. Agents read this file as instructions, so update the line to match package.json and src/version.ts.

Review comments at @deploy/runtime/worker-compose.yaml:
- Around line 13-15: Update the iii-worker-manager host binding to loopback so
the unauthenticated engine WebSocket is reachable only from this container; also
replace the wildcard REST allowed_origins setting with VIEWER_ALLOWED_ORIGINS or
loopback origins.
- Around line 47-70: Update the agentmemory worker environment in the Compose
manifest to mirror the deployment-variable allowlist used by compose-project.ts,
including the secret, provider, model, agent, and team variables. Add
AGENTMEMORY_STATE_BACKEND and AGENTMEMORY_REDIS_URL to the state worker’s
environment as well, so its adapter can be configured for Redis.

Review comments at @README.md:
- Line 1330: Update the README health-monitor description to match the
in-process SSE transport: remove the claim that a Redis test event runs every 30
seconds and that restarting agentmemory restores live updates, and describe only
health behavior supported by the current implementation. Apply the same
correction to the repeated claim in the agentmemory configuration reference.
- Line 1382: Update the README statistics block and other cited test-count
references to match the current synchronized counts: 245 source files, 322
functions, 65 KV scopes, and 3,600+ tests. Use the established documentation
synchronization flow so the generated values remain consistent.

Review comments at @READMEs/README.pl-PL.md:
- Line 1449: Update the Polish noun phrase in the statistics summary so “245”
uses the genitive plural form “plików źródłowych”; leave the other statistics,
including “322 funkcje,” unchanged.

Review comments at @READMEs/README.ru-RU.md:
- Line 1449: Update the Russian README wording in the sentence near “3,400+
тестов” to use the correct noun form “322 функции” instead of “322 функций”;
leave the surrounding text unchanged.

Review comments at @READMEs/README.uk-UA.md:
- Line 1450: Update the Ukrainian README statistic from “322 функцій” to “322
функції,” correcting the noun form after 322 while leaving the surrounding text
unchanged.

Review comments at @scripts/release-gate/graph-index.mjs:
- Line 109: Update the packaged graph-index test setup around the config
replacement so it no longer reads iii-config.yaml from the installed package;
build the required config inline or move this gate to Worker Compose, preserving
the port and data-path substitutions.

Review comments at @scripts/release-gate/run.mjs:
- Around line 643-645: Update refreshContainerRssSnapshot() to call
this.stateStoreFile() inside its existing try block, initializing statePath
beforehand as needed so lookup failures are handled by the method’s existing
catch path.
- Line 505: Update shutdown() and ensureUp() to base Compose cleanup on whether
the Compose process is still alive, not solely on cliExit; ensure shutdown still
calls stop() for an active Compose process and ensureUp force-kills an existing
CLI process when recovery is needed.

Review comments at @scripts/release-gate/startup.mjs:
- Around line 164-185: Update the `raw` YAML construction in `startup.mjs` to
ensure the joined base configuration ends with a newline before appended
entries, including `iii-worker-manager` and `unrelated-exec`, so each entry
begins on its own YAML line.

Review comments at @scripts/release-gate/vector-recovery.mjs:
- Around line 84-85: Update the configuration-loading logic in the vector
recovery gate to read a configuration file included in the installed package
instead of `iii-config.yaml`, which is not published. Preserve the existing
configuration transformations and `start()` flow.

Review comments at @src/cli.ts:
- Around line 1095-1109: Update composePidMatches to resolve the process
executable portably: retain the /proc lookup where available, and on platforms
without it use the executable path from ps or the command’s argv[0]. Preserve
the existing identity checks and Windows behavior.
- Around line 706-719: Update the Compose startup failure checks in the stopped
callback and other Compose log-read paths to inspect only bytes written by the
current daemon; capture the log’s starting offset before launch and carry it in
the Compose state for each read.

Review comments at @src/cli/compose-control.ts:
- Around line 18-36: Update composeRegistryFailureMessage to match only registry
and package-download failures; remove broad Compose and worker-exit patterns so
unrelated failures surface their own last_error. Also remove the trailing space
from the returned message when workerBinDir is unset, while preserving the
configured-directory guidance when it is set.

Review comments at @src/cli/doctor-diagnostics.ts:
- Around line 220-223: Update the engine-version-mismatch diagnostic’s
fixPreview to describe installing the pinned iii-engine binary and restarting
the managed Worker Compose project. In moreInfo, correct the engine name and
remove the obsolete worker-model fragment so the remaining explanation reads
continuously.

Review comments at @src/viewer/index.html:
- Around line 7748-7749: Update reconnectNow so aborting the active request does
not prevent reconnection: after aborting it, ensure the old controller cannot
block a new connectWs call, and always start the new connection. Keep the live
status consistent with the reconnect state.

Review comments at @test/compose-project.test.ts:
- Line 41: Update the path assertions in the compose-project tests to build
their expected prefixes from the temporary `root` returned by `mkdtempSync`,
rather than assuming `/tmp`. Apply this to the worker path, `env_file`,
`AGENTMEMORY_ENV_FILE`, and other `path:///tmp/agentmemory-compose-` assertions.

The startup scenarios now drive the Compose runtime instead of a native engine with iii-config.yaml and built-in workers; packaged worker fixtures stay outside the installed artifact.

Startup only scans log bytes written by the current Compose run, and registry hints are limited to registry and download errors; other failures show their own error and the log tail.

…a dirs

With a custom data dir or --instance the daemon wrote the secret where bundled clients do not look. The secret now stays in the data dir and is mirrored to ~/.agentmemory/secret, so every instance shares the secret clients read.

Thanks for the thorough review, @rohitg00. Both passes are addressed on 66444e5.

First pass

Concurrent first starts: the server adopts the canonical secret that wins the race and rewrites its local file to match; an interleaving test covers it (e03fc8b).
stop --port against another instance is refused before any signal or metadata change (fb9f8cc).
Docker ownership: the entrypoint migrates a legacy 65532-owned volume once, guarded by a marker (201ba42). Tested with a real 0.22.1 store: old memories read, a new one written, both recalled after restart.
Trace directories are created and owned by the runtime user (a0382e0).
/data/.hmac is migrated by ensureServerSecret() (d19a7d7) and stays readable from the entrypoint (82dee2b); an explicit AGENTMEMORY_SECRET still wins. Tested: old token 200, wrong token 401.
AGENTMEMORY_TOOLS and the viewer overrides reach the worker, with precedence tested (01006ea).
Docs: relative links fixed and checked (3,350 links) (b78c36a). AGENTMEMORY_STATE_SAVE_INTERVAL_MS is wired to the state worker again, so its docs are accurate (66ead9f). The SSE route is in the generated references (34f25ce). Website, architecture, Redis and CONTRIBUTING wording are updated, and the legacy Docker migration guide is added (c3e1470, 595a7aa) and translated into every README (32bae49, aa1b50e, 95ca9b0, d02fca1). The description no longer mentions a translation follow-up. The legacy Docker status test and a native removal test no longer depend on host port 3111 (1a41dbb, 30a5d27).

Second pass

Worker crashes: state, http and agentmemory restart with bounded backoff in both the native renderer and the Docker manifest, and disableRestartPolicy is honored (f15abd4). With the real 0.24.6 engine, each worker killed independently comes back ready, a SIGKILLed state worker returns with the memory intact, and an exhausted budget leaves the worker failed with status reporting the last error (8a77204, 5b83314).
Worker commands are shell-quoted for sh -c and cmd /C, tested with spaces and metacharacters by running the rendered commands; Windows is covered by unit tests only (0f8520c).
An explicit AGENTMEMORY_URL is preserved even with Compose state on the same port, tested with local and [::1] endpoints (5337c72, be863f3). Compose readiness now probes the instance's own loopback REST with short per-probe timeouts (66444e5), which also fixed an intermittent release-gate roundtrip timeout.
The console command is fixed in the README and every translation, checked against consoleArgs() (c817910).
The Python snippet is namespace-aware, drops connect(), and documents native vs Docker namespaces in code comments (9d282d0). I ran it against a non-default instance (--instance 9, namespace agentmemory-4011); it returned the memory created over REST.
Railway and Fly build from the repository root with the platform config selected separately (954f9ea), and the buttons are updated (c3e1470). I have not deployed to a hosted account.
III_VERSION, STATE_VERSION and HTTP_VERSION are wired as build args; the agentmemory version is the checkout (1535e13).
Also: the Fly volume command has --app, the viewer health check sends an allowed Host, the streams/"port quartet" wording is gone from the skills and translations, and observability defaults are back to 10% sampling with console log output off (c63ce88).

Validation on 66444e5: npm test 3,808 passed; release gate 10/10 (the roundtrip scenario also passed 10 times in a row with the fix); packaged startup gate 17/17 with the installed package unchanged; Docker legacy-volume upgrade, fresh volume, .hmac migration, Redis and version overrides tested locally. Not covered: hosted Railway/Fly deployments and native Windows.

Discover the pinned iii engine from the test override, PATH or user install, use pinned registry worker packages, and skip live supervision tests when unavailable.

codex-local-package rebuilt dist/plugins/agentmemory-codex-local while the live plugin e2e test read it, which failed intermittently in CI. package-codex.mjs accepts AGENTMEMORY_PLUGIN_OUT_DIR, and the packaging test uses a temporary directory.
