fix(biometrics): stop a stale heart-rate level from doubling a whole night - #899
On the night of 2026-10-30, the pod stored the left side's heart rate at 114 bpm (61–134) all night. The Apple Watch read about 55 that night, as did the pod on the nights before and after, so the app's Watch comparison showed a +56 bpm bias.
From vitals and vitals_quality on the pod (run 3ee7936a):
05:02 UTC (10 pm local), a 5-minute sit on the bed. The run's first reading was 110 bpm, and HRTracker keeps its first reading as the baseline unconditionally.
05:14–10:14, the bed was empty for 5 hours. Nothing resets the tracker when the bed empties; only a process restart or a config change does. The 110 baseline survived.
The night itself. Each true reading of about 57 failed the consistency check against ~110. The "sub-harmonic" correction then doubled it to ~114, which passed and went into history. Every later reading was doubled too: 240 of 244 stored values were exactly 2 × hr_raw. FALLBACK_RESET_STREAK never fired, because doubling always "explained" the reading.
The tracking tolerance (10 vs 15 bpm; a profile revision was active on that side) doesn't matter here: a ~55 bpm gap fails both.
What
HRTracker: doubling only applies when the doubled value is still a resting rate (MAX_DOUBLED_BPM = 100). A reading of 57 against a stale 114 now falls through to the existing fallback, which re-seeds after 3 readings. The existing 40 → 80 sub-harmonic correction still works.
HRTracker.reset(): new.
WindowEstimator: resets the tracker when the last accepted HR is more than HR_STALE_AFTER_S = 600 s old, so a level from an evening sit or a pet never steers the night that follows. The shared estimator applies this to live processing and replay alike.
The bad night was repaired on the pod from vitals_quality.hr_raw (heart_rate = hr_raw where it equalled 2 × hr_raw). After the repair, the night averages 57.6 bpm. A backup is at /persistent/sleepypod-data/biometrics.db.bak-hr-doubling-20261031.
Test plan
New test_stale_high_level_never_doubles_a_resting_rate: replays the incident (a 110 seed, then readings of 57) and expects 57 every time, re-seeding at 57
New test_reset_forgets_the_tracked_level, test_tracker_level_goes_stale_after_the_bed_was_empty and test_tracker_level_survives_short_gaps
piezo-processor pytest .: 294 passed. common: 424 passed, 5 skipped. The golden fixture default-processing-v1.json is unchanged and passes
vitest run src/biometrics: 929 passed, including registry.test.ts
Deploy to the pod and check the next night's left-side HR against the Watch
Heart-rate tracking now starts with fresh history after a gap of more than 10 minutes without a reading, while shorter gaps preserve existing history.
Double-rate correction is now limited to readings at or below 100 BPM, reducing incorrect adjustments for higher readings.
The tracker can be reset so subsequent readings begin a new history.

Walkthrough
HRTracker now supports resetting its history and uses a lower upper bound for double-rate correction. WindowEstimator resets tracking when a non-null heart-rate candidate follows a gap longer than 600 seconds. Regression tests cover these behaviors.

Summary
Tracker reset and double-rate correction modules/common/biometrics/signal.py, modules/common/biometrics/manifest.v1.json, modules/piezo-processor/test_main.py
HRTracker adds reset() and limits double-rate correction to 40–100 BPM. Tests cover reset and stale high-rate history. The manifest records the updated source hash.
Reset tracking after stale gaps modules/common/biometrics/signal.py, modules/piezo-processor/test_shared_signal.py
WindowEstimator resets tracking when a new heart-rate candidate arrives more than 600 seconds after the last non-null result. Tests cover gaps longer than the threshold and exactly at the threshold.
The stale heart-rate reset can still be defeated by a single unmatched reading inside the 10-minute window, so a stale level may keep distorting readings in that case. Track the time the tracker history last changed and add a regression test before merging. The common stale-night case reported in the PR is otherwise handled.
