Summary

  • Adds a "What stays the same, what changes" table to docs/from-a-loop.md: six unchanged areas (SDK call, tools, messages, retries, model, usage) and six changed ones (idle on human wait, maxModelCalls default 100, in-process timers / timers option, ignored events, input validation, executor errors to onError). Every default verified against src/run-agent.ts and src/text-logic.ts.
  • Rewrites Steps 1–4 to reference example files and adds Step 5: the tests, so the page ends on index.test.ts.
  • New examples/port-walkthrough (before.ts loop, index.ts port, four tests: mock run, step limit settles done, idle + snapshot resume, canReach proves no unapproved send). Registered in examples/index.ts, README, suspension.test.ts.
  • Moves one paragraph from the removed "Make model work explicit" section into docs/machines.md.

Notes

  • Timers row links steps.md#host-owned-timers (hosts.md has no timers section).

Verify

pnpm vitest --run examples/port-walkthrough examples/suspension.test.ts src/examples.test.ts, typecheck:examples, docs:check, format:check, lint all pass.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR adds a runnable support-agent loop and a machine-based port. The machine handles replies, continued assistance, and approval-gated email sending. Documentation, tests, and the example catalog cover the port and its execution.

Changes: Support loop port

Layer / File(s) Summary
Baseline loop and result contract
examples/port-walkthrough/before.ts, docs/from-a-loop.md
The runnable loop defines search and email tools, three result shapes, and an eight-iteration limit. The walkthrough links to the example and compares its behavior with the machine port.
Machine states and approval flow
examples/port-walkthrough/index.ts, docs/from-a-loop.md, docs/machines.md
The machine routes among reply, continuation, and email proposal states. Approval leads to sending; rejection returns a pending result. The documentation describes the machine’s explicit model invocation and state transitions.
Runner, resumption, and example integration
examples/port-walkthrough/index.ts, examples/port-walkthrough/index.test.ts, docs/from-a-loop.md, examples/port-walkthrough/metadata.json, examples/README.md, examples/index.ts, examples/suspension.test.ts
The runner handles idle approval snapshots and returns completed output. Tests cover result compatibility, the step limit, JSON snapshot resumption, and approval-gated sending. The example is listed and exported in the catalog.

🟡 Minor · Use responseMessages for the next loop iteration. · before.ts:38-65

examples/port-walkthrough/before.ts:38-65
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use responseMessages for the next loop iteration.

The example imports generateText directly, but it reads response.messages. In the pinned AI SDK version, the response transcript is exposed as responseMessages. A search tool call therefore can reach this line and fail before the next generateText call.

Suggested fix
-    const { toolCalls, text, response } = await generateText({
+    const { toolCalls, text, responseMessages } = await generateText({
...
-    messages.push(...response.messages);
+    messages.push(...responseMessages);

Update runSupportAgent to use generateText’s responseMessages field for the next
loop iteration instead of reading response.messages. Preserve the existing
message-append behavior.
