What

Two changes so a host that serves one attested storage service for all modules (OpenHuman) can run TinyMCP 0.20.x:

  1. storage_callback may name the host's well-known storage service, ai.tinyhumans.tinystorage.Storage. setup then connects to the peer that owns the name (BusProvider::connect_service) instead of requiring a per-instance unique callback destination (connect_at). The name is explicit and exact: an absent destination, an invalid one, or a service nobody owns still fails the load. There is no memory fallback.
  2. Ports reached over the bus are host-managed. StoragePorts::prepare over a bus provider only re-declares the current collections; it no longer runs the in-module migrations, whose shared tsd.migrations ledger and v1 source collections lie outside any host grant. Before this, the first EnsureCollection for tsd.migrations was refused (schema-is-host-only) and the module faulted during setup.

Why

tinyhumansai/openhuman#8280: in a library-embedded OpenHuman runtime, every mcp_call_tool answered TinyMCP module is unavailable. The real startup errors, found by loading the module source-linked with a tracing subscriber, were, in order:

  • tinymcp has no host storage callback (host passed {})
  • storage callback destination must be a unique bus name (host named the well-known service)
  • (after the host side was fixed) mcp store failure while declaring the collections: ... schema-is-host-only for tsd.migrations

The host module host then reports Faulted, which is why the call fails in about 0 s (related masking bug: tinyhumansai/tinybus#109).

Tests

  • bus_provider_reaches_a_host_that_serves_the_well_known_storage_service (fails before: storage callback destination must be a unique bus name)
  • bus_provider_fails_when_the_named_storage_service_has_no_owner
  • a_host_bound_provider_leaves_the_schema_and_migrations_to_the_host (fails before: 7 ledger rows written, expected 0)

cargo test -p tinymcp (1489 lib tests plus integration), cargo clippy -p tinymcp --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --all -- --check: all green.

Notes

  • Public API: BusProvider::connect_service added. ModuleConfig is unchanged on the wire.
  • Behaviour change: over the bus, v1-to-v2 record migration no longer runs in the module; the host's import owns it. Nothing worked on this path before, since the module could not start.
  • A follow-up OpenHuman PR passes the destination, fixes its stream/secret grant selectors and storage backend lookup, and adds an end-to-end embedded tools/call test. It needs a release of this change to be re-pinned.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for connecting to a host-provided shared storage service. Services configured to use it can access host-managed storage.
    • Host-managed storage uses collections declared by the service; schema migrations remain the host’s responsibility.
    • Connections fail with a storage error if the service is unavailable; there is no memory-storage fallback.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for configuring and managing shared storage.

Add tests for the bus provider when the storage callback names the
well-known storage service: one verifies it connects to a host serving
that service, and the other verifies loading fails when no host owns it
rather than silently falling back to memory.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Hosts that serve one storage service for every module can now name it
instead of binding a private callback per instance. The shared name is
matched exactly, so an absent or unowned destination still fails rather
than falling back to memory.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reindented the error mapping chain in bus_provider so it aligns with the
preceding expression. No behaviour change.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Explain that a host serving one storage service for every module can name
that service as the destination, in which case setup connects to the peer
owning the name while still binding scope from the authenticated caller.
An absent destination or unowned service still fails the load rather than
falling back to memory.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Replace the err/expect pair with expect_err in the storage-owner test so the
intent is expressed in a single call.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Storage ports reached over the bus now carry a host-managed flag so that
prepare only verifies the collections the host already declared instead of
running migrations, which would touch collections outside the host's grant.
The bus provider marks its ports as host-managed when constructing them.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Add a bus test asserting that preparing a host-bound provider leaves the
shared migration ledger and v1 source collections untouched, since a host's
grant keeps them out of a module's reach.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The bus test now calls collections with an empty scope argument to match the updated documents API signature.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Rework the host-bound provider test to check collection counts instead of
listing declared names, so it verifies that the module's own collections
exist while the ledger and v1 sources were never created. Missing
collections are now expected to report a NotFound error.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test asserted that a host-bound provider leaves the schema and migrations to the host, but it probed for the absent documents with count, which does not exercise the same lookup path. Switching to get with a probe id keeps the assertion meaningful while matching the API the test intends to cover.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The bus test now probes only a key that is never declared, instead of
also asserting that host-bound providers omit tsd.migrations and
mcp_servers. This keeps the check focused on the absence behaviour it
actually intends to verify.

Auto-committed-on: cuttlefish
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The host-bound provider test now checks the shared migration ledger directly,
confirming that a module run over the bus records no ledger rows while the same
module run locally does. The previous assertions on individual collections were
replaced because the ledger count captures the schema-ownership boundary more
precisely.

Features

  • Added — Well-known storage service destination: A host serving one storage service for every module can set `storage_callback` to `ai.tinyhumans.tinystorage.Storage` and setup connects through `connect_service` to the peer owning that name instead of requiring a per-instance unique destination; absent, invalid, or unowned destinations still fail the load with no memory fallback. (crates/tinymcp/src/tinybus_module/mod.rs pub(super) async fn bus_provider(, crates/tinymcp/src/storage/bus.rs impl BusProvider {, crates/tinymcp/src/storage/mod.rs)
  • Added — BusProvider::connect_service public constructor: Exposes a public constructor for an ordinary, non-attested bus connection to the shared storage service, so the storage provider is reachable outside the crate; its doc comment says the host binds the scope and enforces the grant, and there is no memory fallback. (crates/tinymcp/src/storage/bus.rs impl BusProvider {)
  • Modified — Host-managed storage ports: Ports reached over the bus are flagged host-managed, so `prepare` only re-declares the current non-`tsd.` collections and no longer runs in-module migrations that reach the shared progress ledger and v1 source collections kept outside a host grant; v1-to-v2 record migration becomes the host's import responsibility. (crates/tinymcp/src/storage/ports.rs impl StoragePorts {, crates/tinymcp/src/storage/ports.rs pub struct StoragePorts {, crates/tinymcp/src/storage/bus.rs impl BusProvider {)
  • Modified — Documented storage-ports behavior: Documents the well-known destination, that `prepare` over the bus only re-declares collections, and that v1 record migration is the host's import. (docs/specs/storage-ports.md fails the load rather than falling back to memory, which would lose every)

Tests

No supported feature-to-test mapping was produced. Test execution is not inferred.

critique

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a `host_managed` flag to `StoragePorts` so that ports reached over the bus declare only the module's granted collections and skip the owner migrations, plus a `refuse_ledger` knob on the failing documents test double and two new tests. I found no defect: the bus provider sets the flag, the flag also propagates through `clone()` and `run`, the `tsd.` filter matches the ledger name, and the two new tests exercise both branches. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `661b1164f172`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

security

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a host-managed flag to StoragePorts so that prepare() over host-bound (bus) ports only declares the module's non-`tsd.` collections instead of running the owner-local migrations, plus a FailingDocuments knob and tests that reproduce a host grant refusing the `tsd.migrations` ledger. The logic is test-only infrastructure plus a narrow branch on ports the module itself constructs; I found no security-relevant defect in the reviewed files. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `661b1164f172`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The change adds a host-managed mode to StoragePorts and a well-known storage service connection path, with tests covering both: a host-owned-schema prepare that skips the tsd. migrations ledger and a bus test that reaches the well-known service. One assertion in the bus test does not exercise the new host-managed path, so the stated invariant that a bus provider never touches the ledger is only pinned by an in-process fixture test. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `661b1164f172`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The added tests match the PR's stated tests: the well-known-service connect path, the no-owner failure path, and the host-managed prepare behaviour, with a FailingDocuments ledger refusal standing in for a host grant. The description stays accurate for these commits; I found nothing reportable. _The code index is behind this pull request (indexed at `661b1164f172`), so retrieved context may be out of date._

📝 Walkthrough

TinyMCP can connect to the well-known shared storage service. The resulting ports are host-managed: preparation ensures declared collections but does not run in-module schema or audit-stream migrations. Other configured destinations retain their existing connection path.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title says the code runs under a host that serves one storage service and skips in-module migrations. The changeset matches both points. It adds BusProvider::connect_service, which connects through the well-known storage service name. It also adds a host-managed flag to StoragePorts, so prepare only re-declares collections and skips schema and audit-stream migrations. The title names the two main behaviors, so it is a clear and specific summary.

P1 Badge Exclude the migration ledger from host-managed prepare

When the shared-service host omits the migration ledger from its grant as documented, tinymcp_bus::storage::collection_specs() still includes MIGRATIONS (tsd.migrations) as its final spec. Store::open calls prepare, so this ensure_collection loop sends the forbidden ledger declaration and receives the same schema-is-host-only error, faulting module setup; the new test only checks that no ledger rows were written and therefore misses that the collection was touched. Filter MIGRATIONS or expose specs containing only host-managed runtime collections.

P2 Badge Keep host-managed state probes within the grant

When a shared-service host also omits the v1 sources as this mode documents, McpService::has_stored_state still reaches StoragePorts::has_state, which unconditionally counts every LEGACY_COLLECTIONS entry and enumerates mcp_audit. Those out-of-grant calls are propagated as store errors (only NotFound is swallowed), so HasStoredState fails rather than reporting current state; make that probe branch on host_managed too or delegate it to the host.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

…tions

Add a failing document store that refuses the storage layer's own tsd.
collections, mirroring a host grant, and expose ports built on it. Host-managed
prepare now skips those collections so it no longer starts a migration it
cannot finish, and a test asserts the granted collections are declared while
the module's own migration still reaches for the ledger.

<title>Collection not found — nocobase</title>
<location>https://errors.standardbeagle.com/nocobase/nocobase/collection-name-not-found/</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search0 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago;       if (e.message === `Collection ${targetName} not found`) { ... Thrown at `packages/plugins/@nocobase/plugin-collection-tree/src/server/commands/sync-path.ts:72` ...             throw new Error(`Collection ${name} not found`);

nocobase/nocobase · error

# Collection not found

## Error message

    Collection ${name} not found

## What it means

sync-path resolves the collection via app.db.getCollection(name) after validating the name is non-empty. If no collection with that name is loaded (typo, collection belongs to another data source, plugin not loaded, name given before app start), it throws this error.

## Solutions

  1. Correct the collection name (check /api/collections:list or the collections table).
  2. Ensure the collection&#39;s plugin/data source is enabled and loaded before running the command.
  3. For non-main data sources, run the command within that data source&#39;s app context or adjust setLoadFilter.

### Example fix

    // before
    yarn nocobase sync-path -c categores
    // after
    yarn nocobase sync-path -c categories

Defensive patterns

Strategy: validation

### Validate before calling

    // confirm the collection is loaded before running sync-path
    const collections = await api.resource(&#39;collections&#39;).list({ pageSize: 100 });
    const exists = collections.data.data.some((c) =&gt; c.name === targetName);
    if (!exists) throw new Error(`collection ${targetName} not loaded; check name/plugins`);

### Try / catch

    try {
      await runCommand(&#39;sync-path&#39;, [&#39;-c&#39;, targetName]);
    } catch (e) {
      if (e.message === `Collection ${targetName} not found`) {
        // fix typo or enable the plugin/data source owning the collection
      }
    }

### Prevention

  * Copy collection names from the admin UI or collections:list, don&#39;t retype them.
  * After renaming a collection, update all operational scripts.
  * For multi-datasource setups, confirm which source owns the collection.

## When it happens

Trigger: `yarn nocobase sync-path -c categores` (typo); collection lives in a non-main data source while the command loads only the main one (setLoadFilter by name); running before collections are loaded.

Common situations: Refactoring renamed a collection but old scripts still reference the previous name; multi-datasource setups where the tree collection is on a secondary source.

## Understand the failure class

Background: &#39;Could not be found&#39;, &#39;does not exist&#39;, &#39;not found in database&#39;: the resource-not-found family when an ID, slug, key, or URI lookup comes back empty — this error&#39;s family across 20 libraries.

Skip legacy collection probes for host-managed ports.

has_state still calls ports.documents.count(...) for every LEGACY_COLLECTIONS entry. Host-managed ports exclude the v1 source collections from their grant. The bus proxy preserves a refusal as a non-NotFound storage error, so an empty host-managed scope can return an error instead of false. Keep the current and legacy audit checks, but run legacy collection probes only for non-host-managed ports.

In has_state, keep the current and legacy audit checks, but skip probes for
LEGACY_COLLECTIONS when the port is host-managed; retain legacy collection
probes for non-host-managed ports so an empty host-managed scope returns false
rather than a storage error.

P2 Badge Filter migration resources out of the public host grant

The new prepare filter resolves the earlier module-side ledger declaration, but when a bus host builds its allowlist/provisioning from the documented public storage::grant(), that API still adds tsd.migrations through collection_specs(), every LEGACY_COLLECTIONS entry, and the legacy audit selectors (storage/grant.rs:49-60). The host-managed deployment therefore advertises access to exactly the shared ledger and v1 inputs that this branch and docs/specs/storage-ports.md:84-88 designate host-only, so the host must either violate that isolation or ignore the module's grant; expose a grant/spec set containing only current runtime resources.
