Description

#19588 moved every disaggregated E2E test and perf config to the C++ transfer-agent bounce buffer, so the Python bounce buffer is no longer used. This PR deletes it, makes kv_cache_bounce_size_mb the only bounce switch, and removes max_tokens_in_buffer from configs where it has no effect.

Review found that a failed or cancelled bounce transfer could let the generation worker free KV pages that a late scatter still writes. The C++ bounce had this before, and this PR makes it reachable with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb alone, so the PR also fixes it (see "Review fix" below).

The branch is rebased onto main after #17495 (KV cache manager V2 and the Python transceiver by default), and the max_tokens_in_buffer changes were re-audited for those defaults.

What changes for users

  • cache_transceiver_config.kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 always enables the C++ transfer-agent bounce buffer at that size (per rank); 0 disables it. Previously a positive size without agent_bounce_buffer_enable selected the Python bounce.
  • agent_bounce_buffer_enable is deprecated and ignored. Existing configs still parse; setting it to true logs a warning once per process. It will be removed in a later release.
  • agent_bounce_params now requires kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 (instead of the flag).
  • TRTLLM_KV_CACHE_BOUNCE_MIN_BLOCKS / TRTLLM_KV_CACHE_BOUNCE_MIN_BYTES are no longer read.
  • On a build without bounce support (no libzmq), kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 now fails at startup with a message that says how to fix it, instead of falling back to the Python bounce.
  • enable_pipelined_transfer with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 is now allowed (the restriction applied only to the Python bounce) and has a GPU test.
  • The C++ transceiver and the pure-Python NIXL agent ignore kv_cache_bounce_size_mb with a warning. The FP4-MLA ownership bridge still requires kv_cache_bounce_size_mb == 0.
  • Set kv_cache_bounce_size_mb on both the context and the generation servers. With a positive value, cleanup of a failed or cancelled request can take longer: the generation worker keeps the request's KV cache until every context rank it requested the KV cache from has reported.
    • With live context servers that also have the bounce on, this takes about a round trip, or until the context server has finished its own transfers for that request.
    • It takes up to another kv_transfer_timeout_ms (then a WARNING) when a context server is dead or stuck, runs an earlier release, or has the bounce off. A context server with the bounce off does not answer for requests it never started or already finished.

Review fix: KV pages are freed only after bounce scatters into them have stopped

A failed C++ bounce transfer could be reported while the receiver still had a chunk queued or running in its scatter workers. The generation worker then freed pages that the late scatter could still overwrite.

Separately, after one writer's failure or a cancel, the generation worker freed the pages while chunks from other writers, or from the cancelled transfer, could still be scattered into them.

The C++ bounce had both before; this PR makes them reachable with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb alone. The removed Python bounce avoided both.

  • C++
    • The sender holds a failure until the receiver has answered every chunk whose DATA went out (ACK: scattered, NACK: will not be scattered).
    • On the cancel, the receiver drops and NACKs the flow's scatter jobs that have not started, so the wait is normally one round trip. A job a worker took but has not started scattering is NACKed instead of scattered.
    • With no answer within min(request_timeout_ms, 5 s), the sender reports anyway (WARNING).
    • No message format change.
    • Cost: while a failure is held, the context's KV sender thread waits. There is one sender thread by default (TRTLLM_KV_TRANSFER_NUM_THREADS), so a dead or hung generation worker can delay that rank's other transfers by up to 5 s for each failed request that still had chunks being scattered.
  • Python, generation side (with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0)
    • A failed or cancelled receive keeps its KV pages until every context rank it sent REQUEST_DATA to has sent its final report, for at most another kv_transfer_timeout_ms. After the C++ fix, a writer reports only after the generation side has scattered or dropped every chunk it sent.
    • When the wait starts, the generation worker tells its writers to stop.
    • Under attention-DP generation-first broadcast, it waits for every rank it asked, not only the assigned group.
    • With several generation ranks (TP without attention DP, or PP), only the consensus sweep retires such a request, so every rank frees its pages in the same iteration. If the request never reaches consensus (another generation rank never got it), a rank closes it on its own twice kv_transfer_timeout_ms after the failure or cancel, with a WARNING. By then every other rank has ended its own wait.
    • A synchronous receive that gives up cancels its writers and blocks until they report.
    • Retained requests count against the generation worker's free KV, and graceful shutdown waits for them.
  • Python, context side (with the context's own kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0). A context rank now answers for requests it will not write:
    • A cancel for a request it has no session for (not started yet, already timed out, or failed before the transfer) is answered with a final FAILED right away. So is a REQUEST_DATA that arrives after such a cancel. A session created later for that request starts cancelled and writes nothing.
    • A failed or cancelled session that closes with no task in transfer sends every receiver a final FAILED through that receiver's worker queue, so it follows any write still running for that receiver.
  • Not covered
    • Pages are released without that confirmation only in two cases: a writer stays silent for that extra kv_transfer_timeout_ms, or a scatter on the generation GPU is stuck for more than 5 s. That takes a dead or wedged context server or GPU, or a context rank stuck behind a hung transfer to another generation rank. The generation worker logs a WARNING.
    • A context server from an earlier release, or one with the bounce off, does not answer for requests it has no session for, so such a request waits the full bound.
    • Under attention-DP generation-first broadcast, a non-assigned context rank forgets a request's info after 120 s. With kv_transfer_timeout_ms above that, such a rank may not answer either.
    • Writes the bounce declines (below its descriptor gate, or to a peer with a mismatched handshake) and the auxiliary buffer keep standard NIXL semantics.
    • With the bounce off, release behavior is unchanged.

Upgrade together

Upgrade context and generation servers together.

  • A new context server still serves an older generation server, unless that server uses the Python bounce (kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 without agent_bounce_buffer_enable). Those requests fail at once, and the context log says how to fix that server's config; it logs this once per generation server.
  • A new generation server works with an old context server, with two caveats:
    • The old context server reports C++ bounce failures before the receiver has stopped scattering.
    • It does not answer for requests it has no session for, so with the bounce on, such a request's KV cache is kept for up to another kv_transfer_timeout_ms.

max_tokens_in_buffer

The Python transceiver does not read it. The executor uses it on generation servers to cap the prompt tokens received at once, except with the Python transceiver on KV cache manager V2 with PP1 and asynchronous transfer, where the cap is skipped.

Since #17495 those are the defaults. A config gets the C++ transceiver only with an explicit transceiver_runtime: CPP, and KV cache manager V1 only with an explicit use_kv_cache_manager_v2: false (or a sleep_config).

Kimi K3

The released K3 checkpoint runs on KVCacheManagerV2, whose pools are fabric memory on GB300 NVL72, so standard NIXL writes KV pool to pool across nodes (cuda_ipc). The K3 example and the two K3 perf configs therefore drop the bounce setting (with the default gate the C++ bounce would decline every K3 write anyway). End-to-end results, main vs this PR:

GB300 NVL72, 1 ctx + 1 gen, DEP16 both sides, one rack, 8k/1k random prompts main (Python bounce) this PR (no bounce setting)
c4: output tok/s / TPOT mean (3 runs each, same nodes, interleaved) 104.9 / 34.84 ms 105.1 / 34.80 ms
c64: output tok/s / TPOT mean (median) (9 vs 8 runs over 3 node sets, interleaved per set) 925 / 59.5 (58.2) ms 931 / 59.1 (58.1) ms
c256: output tok/s / TPOT mean (3 runs each, same nodes, interleaved) 2064 / 93.9 ms 2077 / 94.0 ms
GSM8K strict 0.9666 0.9651
gen-side KV transfer p50 per 8k request 12–17 ms 37–44 ms (rack-dependent)

In every arm about 17% of decode steps are ~190 ms spikes, and only ~4% of them coincide with a KV arrival; the occasional run with more spikes shows TPOT 62–65 ms in both arms. Every rank runs MambaHybridCacheManagerV2; cross-node KV goes over cuda_ipc (MNNVL).

These numbers were measured before the review fixes and before the rebase onto #17495. The fixes change only the failure and cancel paths, and the K3 configs already set KV cache manager V2 and the Python transceiver.

The README documents an optional C++-bounce setting for K3 that shortens per-request KV transfer (~40 ms → ~10 ms) at the cost of 1 GiB per GPU; end-to-end throughput was the same either way.

Internal changes

  • Deleted tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/bounce/ and the Python-transceiver code that existed only for it:
    • the bounce_dst_base request field and the KV result tail;
    • send-slot ids;
    • the receiver reservation lifecycle and fan-in gate;
    • the scatter-thread completion callback and deferred local completion;
    • recurrent-state sizing for the bounce region;
    • KVRecvTask's ownership lock. Every complete() and fail() on a registered session runs under RxSession.lock; the incompatible-peer path now takes it too.
  • A REQUEST_DATA that still carries bounce_dst_base is decoded: None is dropped, and a set value fails that request at once (LegacyBounceRequestError).
  • Removed the KVCacheManagerV2 PooledPhysMemAllocator / VirtMem introspection hooks (Python forwarders and nanobind classes) that only the Python bounce used.
  • C++: the bounce failure reporting described above. User-facing strings that named the deprecated flag are reworded.
  • These changes apply in every mode and change nothing that is sent:
    • Each DEALER socket that several threads share now serializes its own sends: the context's sockets to receivers and the generation's sockets to context servers. ZMQ sockets are not thread-safe, and the new answers add listener sends on paths where the executor thread and the workers also send.
    • At shutdown no new socket is opened, and the sockets are closed within one shared 5 s wait for sends in progress. A socket whose send is still stuck is left open with a WARNING rather than closed under it.
    • A closing session's request info is removed before the session itself.
    • A writer's FAILED that arrives after the transfer has already ended is logged at DEBUG. The transfer has ended by then because of a cancel, or another writer's failure that was already logged at ERROR.
  • test_transfer_ownership_regressions.py::test_cancel_after_publication_cannot_overtake_request_data no longer asserts that the writer's report thread is still alive right after it starts.
    • Since [None][fix] Bound unproven KV retirement with non-resettable deadlines #19673 nothing orders that report after the REQUEST_DATA publication, so the check was timing-dependent on main.
    • It held only while logging the report at ERROR was slow, and that report is now logged at DEBUG. It is now a join.
    • The test still asserts that no page is reused before the publication finishes, and its protocol-order assertions are unchanged.
  • base/backend.py states the bounce exception to "a writer's report is not a release condition".
  • 13 commits on main 30dc23f: config semantics → Python transceiver deletion → configs/docs → C++ text → VMM hooks → lock → max_tokens_in_buffer → Kimi K3 → C++ bounce failure reporting → older generation servers → receive-task lock → pipelined bounce test → keeping a failed or cancelled bounce receive's KV until its writers report.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • The 8 MiniMax-M3 perf configs set kv_cache_bounce_size_mb: 0 next to TRTLLM_NIXL_BOUNCE_ENABLE / TRTLLM_NIXL_BOUNCE_ARENA_SIZE_BYTES, which nothing reads, so the bounce is off there (pre-existing).
  • [None][perf] Speed up NIXL bounce v2 transfers of small KV descriptors #20044 speeds up the C++ transfer-agent bounce (2.15× for a K3-sized request on GB300). It touches the same C++ files with no overlapping hunks; whichever lands second rebases.
  • Under attention-DP generation-first broadcast with kv_transfer_timeout_ms above 120 s, a non-assigned context rank that has swept a request's info cannot answer its cancel, so the generation worker waits the full bound (see "Not covered").
  • examples/models/core/exaone still sets backend: UCX without transceiver_runtime: CPP, which [None][feat] BREAKING: Default to KV cache manager V2 and Python transceiver #17495's defaults reject (not touched here).

Test Coverage

Deleted: tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_bounce.py (its KV-result-frame tests moved to test_transfer_late_settlement.py, TestMambaHelixCP to test_rank_info.py) and tests/unittest/kv_cache_manager_v2_tests/test_virt_mem_lifetime.py. Bounce-only ownership cases were converted to the plain path. Added config tests for the new semantics (size alone selects the C++ bounce, deprecation warning, agent_bounce_params validation) and TransferWorker wiring.

Added for the review fixes:

  • bounceTransportFailureTest gtests:
    • a held failure ending on ACK or NACK of the sent chunk, not on answers for another chunk or from another peer;
    • a silent receiver, both below and at the 5 s cap;
    • a NACK while another chunk is unanswered;
    • shutdown during a hold;
    • no hold with the timeout disabled;
    • the receiver dropping and NACKing queued and taken jobs on a cancel;
    • a real receiver ending the hold;
    • the NACK for DATA after lease expiry;
    • forget-peer with a lease-orphaned job.
  • CPU tests:
    • older generation servers (test_unsubmitted_session.py);
    • the incompatible-peer lock (test_task_handle.py);
    • test_receive_waits_for_writers.py, 29 cases: the retention, the context-side answers, the multi-rank consensus and its local-close escape, and the shared DEALER sockets.
  • test_python_nixl_cache_transceiver_uses_cpp_bounce[v2_mha_pipelined].
  • The regression tests were checked to fail without their fix, and the guards pass on both sides:
    • the C++ gtests on GB300, against C8's BounceTransport.{h,cpp};
    • the Python tests on the desktop, against the files of the commit before.

Validated:

  • GB300 NVL72 (one node with 4 GPUs, CI SBSA image), with this branch on main a8d7911 (cac284d2b8). The rebases onto 42c1abf and then 30dc23f applied the 13 commits unchanged, and main's changes in between do not touch the KV transfer code. The wheel and the 12 bounce gtest binaries were built at 984eecf558, whose C++ is identical; the Python package and the tests are from cac284d2b8.
    • All 12 bounce gtest binaries pass. Over 3 repeats, bounceTransportTest passes 21/21, bounceTransportFailureTest 78/78 and bounceAgentE2ETest 18/18. The C9 tests pass 220/220 over 20 repeats.
    • Fail-before (earlier round, a1904b7487, same C9 production code): built against C8's BounceTransport.{h,cpp}, all 10 C9 regression tests fail at their intended assertions, and the guard (NoHoldWhenRequestTimeoutDisabled) passes.
    • With the real wheel:
    • GPU:
      • test_python_nixl_cache_transceiver_uses_cpp_bounce: 5/5, including v2_mha_pipelined.
      • test_csa2_kv_transfer.py: 26 passed.
      • test_transfer_lifecycle_gpu.py: 7/7 on 4 GPUs.
    • E2E: test_disaggregated_overlap_transceiver_runtime_python_bounce passed twice. Each time the context log showed 115 "bounce path engaged for write" lines, and both sides had a fabric-backed arena. Its plain-Python control, test_disaggregated_overlap_transceiver_runtime_python, also passed.
    • On that cluster the single-process bounce test needs UCX_TCP_AF_PRIO=inet. The test file drops UCX_NET_DEVICES (on main since [None][feat] Support the masked DSA indexer k-cache pool in the Python cache transceiver #17283), and the cluster's VF rails are IPv6-only. This is unrelated to this PR.
  • RTX A6000 at 5837cd1 (the same 13 commits before the rebase onto 30dc23f). The compiled artifacts are from an older main, so the C++ changes are not exercised there, and a local test-only shim stood in for two binding names that [TRTLLM-16621][feat] Support DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash #19727 added.
  • GB200, before the review fixes and the rebase:
    • test_disaggregated_overlap_transceiver_runtime_python_bounce: the YAML no longer sets the flag, and the context log shows the same 100 "bounce path engaged for write" lines as main.
    • test_disaggregated_overlap_transceiver_runtime_python, test_transfer_lifecycle_gpu.py (7/7) and test_py_cache_transceiver_mp.py (4 shards) all pass.
    • The same-node A/B timing ratio is 1.004.
  • Configs edited by the max_tokens_in_buffer commit, control vs branch on GB200 before the rebase: DeepSeek-V3-Lite empty batch, Mamba bs1 concurrency 2, Qwen3-8B NIXL GSM8K (87.15 vs 87.23), and Qwen3.5-4B mismatched block reuse (within run-to-run noise). All pass.
  • Kimi K3 on GB300 NVL72: see the table above.
  • Not run:
    • TestMiniMaxM3::test_nvfp4_eagle3_disagg_head_mismatched_bounce (6× B200, post-merge only);
    • test_gen_only_sync (Hopper only; comment-only change);
    • a K3 spot check after the review fixes (K3 runs without the bounce).

Dev Engineer Review

  • kv_cache_bounce_size_mb now controls the C++ transfer-agent bounce buffer. Positive values enable it; zero disables it. agent_bounce_buffer_enable remains parseable but is deprecated and ignored.
  • Python KV bounce state, VMM introspection hooks, bounce sizing gates, and bounce-only Python modules were removed. Legacy bounce_dst_base requests now fail instead of being accepted.
  • Transfer cancellation and failure handling now removes queued scatters, sends NACKs, tracks outstanding ACK/NACK responses, and waits with a bounded timeout before releasing failed requests.
  • Pipelined transfer is now compatible with a positive C++ bounce-buffer size. FP4 MLA still requires bounce to be disabled. Unsupported builds fail at startup when bounce is requested.
  • max_tokens_in_buffer was removed where the Python transceiver or executor did not use the cap. Remaining capped paths retain it.
  • Configuration, documentation, and Kimi K3 examples now describe the new default behavior and optional C++ bounce configuration.
  • Main risks are cross-version compatibility, bounded waits for silent or stalled writers, and possible regressions from removing Python bounce lifecycle and VMM test coverage. Upgrade context and generation servers together.
  • Review severity counts are unavailable from the supplied findings. Reported CI pipeline status was failure; a later run has no result supplied.

QA Engineer Review

  • Modified tests cover C++ bounce operation, pipelined transfer, legacy bounce_dst_base rejection, transfer ownership, cancellation, late settlement, bounded polling, task failures, Mamba rank pairing, and configuration validation.
  • Removed tests/unittest/disaggregated/test_bounce.py and CUDA virtual-memory lifetime tests reduce direct coverage of the deleted Python bounce implementation and VMM helpers.
  • Removed bounce tests from the A10 and H100 pre-merge test lists. Several performance configurations also remove the deprecated enable flag.
  • The supplied validation reports include CPU, GPU, gtest, and E2E runs, but the CI pipeline reported failure and no complete post-fix result is supplied.
  • Coverage verdict: needs follow-up.
  • The changed integration tests are not shown as newly added to a replacement CI or manual-QA list. Confirm list coverage before merge.

Walkthrough

This PR removes the Python-side bounce implementation, routes bounce control through kv_cache_bounce_size_mb, updates C++ bounce transport cancellation and failure handling, and aligns transfer code, tests, examples, and documentation with the remaining C++ transfer-agent bounce path.

Changes

NIXL bounce buffer transition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounce configuration and enablement
cpp/tensorrt_llm/executor/cache_transmission/nixl_utils/..., tensorrt_llm/llmapi/llm_args.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/kv_cache_transceiver.py, tests/unittest/llmapi/test_llm_args.py
kv_cache_bounce_size_mb now acts as the bounce on/off and capacity setting. agent_bounce_buffer_enable is documented and validated as deprecated and ignored.
Direct NIXL transfers and receive retirement
tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/transfer.py, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/bounce/*, tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/transceiver.py, cpp/tensorrt_llm/nanobind/batch_manager/kvCacheManagerV2.cpp, tensorrt_llm/runtime/kv_cache_manager_v2/_introspection.py
The Python bounce modules and related introspection bindings were removed. Transfer requests and KV result messages no longer carry Python bounce metadata. Receiver ownership and settlement no longer wait for local scatter completion. Legacy requests that still contain bounce_dst_base now fail with a result.
C++ bounce cancellation and failure handling
cpp/tensorrt_llm/executor/cache_transmission/nixl_utils/bounce/BounceTransport.cpp
Receiver cancellation now drops queued scatter work, sends NACKs for cancelled or stale chunks, and defers region release when workers still own a region. Sender failure handling now tracks unanswered chunks and resolves held failures on answers, timeout, or shutdown.
Transfer and lifecycle test updates
tests/unittest/disaggregated/*, cpp/tests/unit_tests/executor/bounce/bounceAgentE2ETest.cpp, tests/unittest/kv_cache_manager_v2_tests/test_virt_mem_lifetime.py
Tests were updated for direct KV result framing, legacy bounce-request rejection, incompatible-peer handling, pipelined C++ bounce submissions, and the removed wait_for_local_completion path. Python-bounce-specific tests and fixtures were removed.
Documentation, examples, and deployment configuration
docs/source/..., examples/kimi_k3/disagg/*, examples/disaggregated/slurm/..., tests/integration/defs/..., tests/scripts/perf*/disaggregated/*
Docs and examples now describe the C++ transfer-agent bounce buffer and the Python transceiver path for KDA state. Many configs remove agent_bounce_buffer_enable, several Kimi K3 examples remove bounce and token-buffer settings, and related comments were updated.

Keep destination KV alive until the native scatter drains. The default 30-second bounce timeout can report failure before the 60-second transfer deadline, allowing freed request pages to be overwritten.

Agreed. Fixed in 6999b4e and a9e120d. A failed bounce transfer is now reported only after the receiver's scatter has stopped. The generation worker keeps a failed or cancelled request's KV pages until every context rank it asked for data has reported. With live context servers that normally takes about a round trip, and at most another kv_transfer_timeout_ms. Details are in the reply to @zhaoyangwang-nvidia's comment on the same line.

Following up on the existing thread: with the Python-side scatter gone, nothing ties the agent bounce request_timeout_ms (default 30s) to kv_transfer_timeout_ms (default 60s). Can the receiver agent still be scattering into pages that were freed after a reported failure? If so, please either validate the ordering in CacheTransceiverConfig or wait for scatter quiescence before releasing the pages.

Yes, it could. Fixed in 6999b4e and a9e120d. I didn't add a config check, because which timeout fires first doesn't decide this.

The race. When a bounce request failed (a write or gather error, a receiver NACK, or the no-progress timeout), the C++ sender resolved FAILURE at once, even if it had already sent DATA for an earlier chunk. The receiver could still have that chunk queued or running in its scatter workers, and the cancel that followed did not stop it. The context reports FAILED as soon as the future resolves, the generation worker frees the pages, and the late scatter writes into them. A write error on chunk 2 while chunk 1 is still queued is enough; no timeout is involved.

A second case: a generation rank often receives one request from several context ranks (for example when context TP is larger than generation TP). After one writer's failure or a cancel, the generation worker freed the pages while chunks from other writers, or from the cancelled transfer, could still be scattered into them.

The C++ bounce had both before this PR; this PR makes them reachable with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb alone. The Python bounce avoided both: it scattered only after SUCCESS and kept its region until every writer had reported.

The fix.

  • C++ (6999b4e). The sender holds a failure until the receiver has answered every chunk whose DATA it sent: ACK (scattered) or NACK (will not be scattered). On the cancel, the receiver drops that flow's scatter jobs that have not started and NACKs them, so the wait is normally one round trip. If no answer comes within min(request_timeout_ms, 5 s), the sender reports anyway with a WARNING. The cap is 5 s because a held failure blocks the context's KV sender thread. No message format change.
  • Python (a9e120d), with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0. The generation worker keeps a failed or cancelled request's KV pages until every context rank it sent REQUEST_DATA to has sent its final report, for at most another kv_transfer_timeout_ms (then a WARNING). After the C++ fix, a writer reports only after the generation side has scattered or dropped every chunk it sent.
    • When it starts waiting, the generation worker tells its writers to stop.
    • A context rank with the bounce on now answers for requests it will not write:
      • If it has no session for the request (not started yet, already timed out, or failed before the transfer), it answers the cancel with its final FAILED right away. A session it creates later for that request starts cancelled and writes nothing.
      • A failed or cancelled context session that closes sends every receiver a final FAILED, queued behind that receiver's earlier results.
    • So with live context servers the wait lasts about a round trip, or until the context server has finished its own transfers for that request. This needs the bounce on both servers, which the docs already ask for.
    • This covers deadlines and cancels on either side (kv_transfer_timeout_ms, a user cancel).
    • With several generation ranks (TP without attention DP, or PP), only the consensus sweep retires such a request, so every rank frees its pages in the same iteration. If a request never reaches consensus (another generation rank never got it), a rank closes it on its own twice kv_transfer_timeout_ms after the failure or cancel, with a WARNING. By then every other rank has ended its own wait.
    • The FP4-MLA ownership bridge is unchanged and still requires bounce off.
  • Tests. New gtests in bounceTransportFailureTest and CPU tests in test_receive_waits_for_writers.py. The regression tests fail without their fix; the gtests were checked on GB300.

What remains.

  • Pages are released without that confirmation only in two cases: a writer stays silent for the extra kv_transfer_timeout_ms, or a scatter on the generation GPU is stuck for more than 5 s. In practice that takes a dead or wedged process, or a context rank stuck behind a hung transfer to another generation rank. The generation worker logs a WARNING.
  • A context server from an earlier release, or one with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb = 0, does not answer for requests it has no session for, so such a request waits the full bound (the PR description has the details).
  • The guarantee covers writes the bounce carried. Writes it declines (below its descriptor gate, or to a peer with a mismatched handshake) go through standard NIXL as before.
  • With kv_cache_bounce_size_mb = 0 on the generation worker, release behavior is unchanged.

RecvReqInfo.from_bytes does cls(**d), so a payload from a pre-removal peer that still carries bounce_dst_base raises TypeError and the receiver hangs until the transfer timeout. Either drop the legacy key (d.pop("bounce_dst_base", None)) or reject it with an explicit mixed-version error.

Fixed in 198923c. Both options, depending on the value:

  • None: the key is dropped. That generation server reserved no Python bounce region, so it works with this context server.
  • Set: that server reserved a Python bounce region and expects the KV there, which this release no longer writes. from_bytes raises LegacyBounceRequestError, and _respond_with_kv answers with a FAILED KV result, so the generation server fails the request at once instead of waiting out kv_transfer_timeout_ms. The context logs this once per generation server, naming the server and the fix (run both on the same release, or set kv_cache_bounce_size_mb to 0 on that server), and logs each rejected request at DEBUG. The context's own side of such a request still ends at its timeout, as before.

Other unknown keys still fail decoding. Dropping the set case silently would have written the KV where that server doesn't read it. Unit tests cover all three cases.

complete()/fail() now rely on every caller holding RxSession.lock, but fail() is documented to also run unlocked on the PeerIncompatibleError path. Can you confirm no concurrent complete() can race there, or keep a cheap guard so the contract is enforced rather than only documented?

No complete() can race there. The PeerIncompatibleError branch runs before REQUEST_DATA is sent, so no context server can report a result for this task yet. Agreed the rule should be enforced, not just documented, so in f40c8c9 that branch calls fail() under RxSession.lock in both modes. Nothing holds the lock at that point (RxSession.receive and dispatch_prepared_receive call dispatch_task unlocked), so it can't deadlock. If the session was already closed and unregistered, the task is failed directly as before, since nothing can reach it then. The fail()/complete() docstrings state the rule, and a unit test checks that this path calls fail() with the lock held.

Since enable_pipelined_transfer is now allowed together with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0, is there a test that exercises that combination end to end? The removed TODO (a chunking sender paired with a bouncing receiver is only checked against the local config) still seems to apply.

Added in 640142c: test_python_nixl_cache_transceiver_uses_cpp_bounce[v2_mha_pipelined] runs with enable_pipelined_transfer=True and kv_cache_bounce_size_mb=64. The context sends each request in 2-block pieces through respond_and_send_async (6 pieces for the two requests).

  • The test checks the generation KV byte for byte.
  • It also checks that the context agent made exactly one bounce submission per piece and declined none.
  • It is a transceiver-level test: real NIXL and C++ bounce, pieces built by _build_prefill_extent, without the executor or aux. Aux is a DRAM write that never uses the bounce.
  • It runs on one GPU and is already listed in l0_h100.

The removed TODO was about the Python bounce. Its receiver reserved one region for the whole request, so it couldn't take a pipelined sender, and the check saw only the local config.

The C++ bounce has no per-request receiver region. Every NIXL write, and so every pipelined piece, is staged on its own with its own WANT/GRANT, so the two sides have nothing to agree on about chunking. What they must agree on (bounce enabled, effective chunk size, request_timeout_ms) is checked per peer when the agent loads the peer's metadata. On a mismatch, that pair uses standard NIXL. Chunk-size and timeout mismatches are covered by BounceAgentE2E.EffectiveChunkCapFallsBackToStandardNixl and BounceTransport.ReplacementHandshakeClearsStaleCompatibility.

Preserve receiver routing in non-ownership cancellation.

In gen-first ADP mode, a non-assigned context rank stores RecvReqInfo but does not create a TxSession. The stale-request sweep can remove that information after 120 seconds. CANCEL_SESSION then carries only the RID, so _handle_cancel_session has no receiver routing and cannot send the required final FAILED report. The generation rank can wait for the published writer until the writer-report timeout, retaining KV capacity during cancellation storms.

Include the receiver identity and required report fields in non-ownership CANCEL_SESSION, and use them when the saved RecvReqInfo has been swept. Do not report FAILED solely because the saved entry is missing; an assigned context group may still complete the transfer.

lines 2064 - 2067:
Update the non-ownership cancellation path guarded by
_answers_unwritten_requests to include receiver identity and required report
fields in CANCEL_SESSION, then use that metadata in _handle_cancel_session when
saved RecvReqInfo is unavailable. Do not treat a missing saved entry alone as
grounds to report FAILED, since an assigned context group may still complete the
transfer.

Confirmed, with a narrower trigger. The swept entry matters only if the cancel reaches a non-assigned context rank more than 120 s after its REQUEST_DATA arrived. The generation side starts its transfer clock when it sends REQUEST_DATA and cancels at kv_transfer_timeout_ms (60 s by default), so with default settings the entry is still there and that rank answers at once. With kv_transfer_timeout_ms above about 120 s, the generation worker keeps the request's pages for up to another kv_transfer_timeout_ms, then releases them with a WARNING. Nothing is written into freed pages, since a non-assigned rank never writes. I'll handle this in a follow-up PR.

… bounce

The Python KV bounce buffer is no longer used now that the C++
transfer-agent bounce covers the E2E paths (NVIDIA#19588). Route
kv_cache_bounce_size_mb straight to the C++ agent arena:

- kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 enables the C++ transfer-agent bounce
  buffer; 0 disables it.
- agent_bounce_buffer_enable becomes a deprecated no-op that warns when
  set to True; True with size 0 no longer raises.
- agent_bounce_params now requires kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0.
- Lift the pipelined-transfer blocker that only applied to the Python
  bounce, and reword the C++ transceiver, pure-Python agent and FP4-MLA
  bridge messages for the new semantics.

After this commit the Python bounce is unreachable; the next commit
deletes it.

…sceiver

Delete tensorrt_llm/_torch/disaggregation/native/bounce and every
Python-transceiver adaptation that existed only to serve it:

- bounce ctor args and TransferWorkerConfig.bounce;
- the receiver reservation lifecycle (reserve, writer_base, idle-release,
  orphan, abort_publication, record_failure) and the fan-in gate;
- the sender send-slot lifecycle and the KV_AGENT_RESULT bounce tail;
- RecvReqInfo/WriteMeta.bounce_dst_base on the wire;
- region sizing for recurrent state (mamba_receiver_payload_bytes);
- the deferred scatter completion: the receiver now completes the task
  inline under RxSession.lock, as the non-bounced path already did, so
  wait_for_local_completion/finish_local_completion go away.

RecvReqInfo no longer carries bounce_dst_base, so context and
generation servers must be upgraded together.

Tests that only covered the Python bounce are deleted; the KV result
frame tests move to test_transfer_late_settlement.py and the helix
MambaPolicy tests to test_rank_info.py.

…e bounce docs

kv_cache_bounce_size_mb alone now selects the C++ transfer-agent bounce,
so remove agent_bounce_buffer_enable from the perf, perf-sanity and E2E
YAMLs and from the MiniMax-M3 accuracy test, and drop the stale
"Python bounce layer off" comment from the MiniMax-M3 perf YAMLs.

Rewrite the docs and examples that described the Python bounce:
- disagg-serving.md and kv-transfer.md describe the C++ transfer-agent
  bounce buffer.
- The Kimi K3 examples are updated separately (see the K3 commit).
- The cache transceiver test harness comment documents the gate and its
  TRTLLM_NIXL_BOUNCE_* env knobs.

kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0 alone enables the C++ transfer-agent bounce,
so the user-facing C++ strings and comments that named
agent_bounce_buffer_enable now name kv_cache_bounce_size_mb: the
no-libzmq THROW, the params-without-arena WARNING, the CMake status
message and the config comments. The peer-handshake WARNING keeps the
older-release cause (a peer that predates this change with
agent_bounce_buffer_enable off). No behavior change.

The PooledPhysMemAllocator/VirtMem nanobind classes and their Python
_introspection forwarders existed only for the Python KV bounce buffer,
which is gone. Remove them together with their lifetime test.
cudaVirtMem.h still reaches its users through storage/core.h.

The lock serialized KVRecvTask.complete() against fail() because
complete() could run on the Python bounce scatter worker without
RxSession.lock. With the Python bounce gone, every complete() and every
post-publication fail() runs under RxSession.lock, and the only
lock-free fail() happens before publication. Keep the "a committed
failure stands" check in complete() and drop the lock.

Kimi K3 checkpoints load KimiK3ForConditionalGeneration, which prefers
KVCacheManagerV2. Its MLA KV cache and KDA state live in V2 pools, which
are allocated as fabric memory when the platform supports it, so
standard NIXL can write them pool to pool across nodes over MNNVL. The
K3 examples were written for the Python bounce buffer, which this PR
removes, and the C++ agent bounce's default gate declines K3's
head-matched writes, so a 1 GiB per-GPU buffer would be unused.

Drop kv_cache_bounce_size_mb from the K3 example and the two K3 perf
configs, together with the Python-bounce sizing guidance and
measurements. Drop max_tokens_in_buffer there (V2, PP1, asynchronous),
except the benchmark config's generation key, which its gen_only mode
still uses. Fix the stale claims that auto resolves K3 to the C++
transceiver and that the KV pool is non-fabric. The README now
describes K3 on KVCacheManagerV2, calls the transceiver "Python
transceiver", and notes that use_kv_cache_manager_v2: false (or "auto"
with a text-only checkpoint) runs the V1 MixedMambaHybridCacheManager,
whose KDA state cannot use cross-node cuda_ipc. The _util.py comment on
the Mixed manager is scoped to that V1 path.

On GB300 NVL72 the current configs match the previous transfer path in
GSM8K and end-to-end throughput, with cross-node KV going pool to pool
over MNNVL. The README and the K3 deployment guide report this, and the
README gives an optional bounce setting that shortens the per-request
KV transfer for 1 GiB per GPU.

… Python bounce

Generation servers from before the Python bounce buffer was removed put
bounce_dst_base in every REQUEST_DATA. RecvReqInfo.from_bytes passed it to
the dataclass, which raised TypeError; the context server only logged it,
and the generation server waited out kv_transfer_timeout_ms.

Drop the key when it is None: that server reserved no bounce region. When
it is set, the server expects the KV in its Python bounce region, which
this release no longer writes: raise LegacyBounceRequestError and answer
the request with a FAILED KV result, so the generation server fails it at
once. The context logs this once per generation server and each rejected
request at DEBUG. Other unknown keys still fail decoding.

…n lock

KVRecvTask.complete() and fail() rely on the caller holding RxSession.lock,
but dispatch_task's PeerIncompatibleError branch called fail() without it.
No complete() could race there (REQUEST_DATA is not sent yet), so the rule
was only documented. Take the lock there too when the session is still
registered. If it is already closed, fail the task directly as before:
no listener can reach a task of an unregistered session.

enable_pipelined_transfer is now allowed with kv_cache_bounce_size_mb > 0,
but no GPU test sent a request in pieces. Add v2_mha_pipelined to
test_python_nixl_cache_transceiver_uses_cpp_bounce: the context sends each
prompt in 2-block pieces, the generation KV is checked byte for byte, and
the context agent must route every piece through the bounce and decline
none.
