fix(barrier): resolve cuDSS mtlayer path at runtime - #1982
Conversation
The compiled-in absolute path to cuDSS's prebuilt threading-layer plugin is resolved at CMake configure time and can go stale once installed elsewhere (e.g. an unrelocated conda/rattler-build sandbox path), causing dlopen to fail. Re-derive it from wherever libcudss.so.0 actually loaded from at runtime instead. Also drops "to avoid a possible crash during teardown" from the fallback warning. &cudssCreateMg can be our own PLT stub rather than the real symbol, which dladdr would attribute to cuOpt's own module instead of libcudss.so.0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Can this move inside the `if (cudss_mt_lib_file[0] == '/')?

Good catch — the separate string couldn't safely move inside that if (its pointer needs to outlive the block). Removed the two-variable pattern entirely: cudss_mt_lib_file is now a single std::string reassigned in place, no raw pointer/lifetime issue anymore.

What does this mean? "can go stale"?

Reworded — it means CUDSS_MT_LIB_FILE_NAME is a path resolved at CMake configure time from cuDSS's build-time install location, which can differ from (or not exist at) its actual install location wherever the package ends up (e.g. an unrelocated build sandbox path).

Suggestion as this seems very complicated for a rare bug:
We could restore filename lookup for conda instead of adding cudss_library_dir(). pin_cudss_threading_layer() loads the plugin first with RTLD_NODELETE, and we pass the same name to cudssSetThreadingLayer() only if pinning succeeds. glibc checks already loaded libraries by name before searching paths. Conda CI used the filename successfully before #1960; is there a supported case where these calls could select different plugins?

You're right, and there's history that backs this up: git blame shows the switch to a full path was a deliberate choice in #1883 specifically so the pin and cudssSetThreadingLayer() resolve the same file -- but per the glibc behavior you linked, a bare filename actually satisfies that more reliably, since both calls hit the same already-loaded soname entry regardless of search path. Switched to keeping the basename in both branches (dropped the whole dladdr/dlsym mechanism) -- much smaller diff.
…overy glibc's dlopen matches an already-loaded library by name before searching paths, so a bare filename resolves the same mapping as the initial pin without needing a build-time-resolved absolute path that can go stale. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-derives the cuDSS threading-layer plugin path from wherever libcudss.so.0 actually loaded from, instead of trusting the compile-time-baked absolute path (which can go stale, e.g. an unrelocated conda/rattler-build sandbox path). Also drops the alarming "to avoid a possible crash during teardown" wording from the fallback warning.
