Why

Hypatia's critical structural_drift/SD004 on VCL-UT was caused by .machine_readable/STATE.a2ml remaining in a retired location. The old path was intentionally retained while the OpenSSF workflow, Justfile, AI guidance and machine-readable manifest still required it. Merely moving the file would produce a false-green security fix and break other consumers.

Change

  • Move one authoritative state record intact to .machine_readable/descriptiles/STATE.a2ml (100% rename, no duplicate).
  • Update live references in Justfile, OpenSSF compliance workflow, the machine-readable manifest, AI guidance and relevant docs. Historical changelog references remain historical.
  • Make just validate-state actually fail on a missing or malformed required checkpoint or a duplicate at the retired location; previously it printed INVALID while exiting 0.
  • Make the OpenSSF workflow reject a newly recreated legacy duplicate and verify the descriptile path.
  • Update the authority map to document the single canonical checkpoint. No Hypatia rules, severities, exclusions or baselines were weakened.

Verification

  • just validate-state: PASS (required fields present at new path).
  • actionlint .github/workflows/openssf-compliance.yml: PASS.
  • git diff --check: PASS.
  • All active full old-path references were reconciled; only the historical changelog and the explanation of the retired path remain.
  • Git commit a9f0b53 SSH-signed (G).

Separate pre-existing finding

just validate-rsr still fails because it expects five licensing/documentation files that are absent from the repository's current main tree. This migration does not fabricate them or weaken that check. The new validate-state and workflow-lint validations passed, but the wider RSR check remains a distinct repair.

CI must re-run Hypatia to confirm the SD004 critical finding has disappeared; local file relocation alone is not a security attestation.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated project guidance and checklists to identify the new canonical location for the project state file.
  • Chores
    • Updated validation and compliance checks to require the state file at its new location and reject the legacy path.

The canonical project checkpoint moves from .machine_readable/STATE.a2ml to .machine_readable/descriptiles/STATE.a2ml. Repository commands and compliance checks use the new path, while state validation rejects the legacy path and checks required structural fields.

Changes: Project state checkpoint path

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define the canonical checkpoint path
0-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml, .machine_readable/0.1-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml, .machine_readable/README.adoc
The manifests and README identify .machine_readable/descriptiles/STATE.a2ml as the canonical checkpoint and retire the former root path.
Update commands and compliance checks
Justfile, .github/workflows/openssf-compliance.yml
Justfile recipes and the compliance workflow use the new path. validate-state fails if the legacy file exists, the new file is missing, or required structural fields are absent.
Update state-file references
.github/pull_request_template.md, .machine_readable/ai/*, .machine_readable/descriptiles/PLAYBOOK.a2ml, docs/RSR_OUTLINE.adoc, docs/practice/AI-CONVENTIONS.adoc
The checklist, agent instructions, playbook and documentation refer to the new checkpoint path.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Low · previous review a9f0b

The checkpoint relocation is mergeable with bounded documentation follow-up. Contributors following the outdated directory tree or copying the STATE example will encounter validation failures; update both examples to match the canonical path and required fields.

@hyperpolymath
hyperpolymath dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review October 29, 2026 22:44

Superseded by signed fix b4025cb: both actionable findings were corrected (canonical descriptile directory tree and a STATE example compatible with the fail-closed validator), replied to, and their review threads resolved. just validate-state, actionlint, and git diff --check passed. The old CHANGES_REQUESTED state was stale and no unresolved findings from this review remain. Full CI gates remain required.
