Repair the internal-service baseline and retire direct NIF transport - #318
The game-estate audit reproduced the failed Rust/Elixir gates, the unauthenticated server defaults and the gap between per-store commits and crash-atomic Octad publication. This draft repairs the baseline and preserves a newly reproduced document-identity failure. It is not ready to merge or to certify the game-estate acceptance criterion.
Changes: loopback Rust/Elixir listener defaults and CORS off; configured-auth router regressions; bounded fail-closed VCL-total invocation using the producer's v1 --input contract; retirement of Rustler/native loading with HTTP preserved; Tokio/Tantivy advisory fixes; coverage/audit and reusable-workflow repairs; Bash/awk/jq modality checker replacing the banned Python file without weakening its controls. No coverage threshold or security exception is relaxed.
Current head: e6f62774154077ac530709cd116ab8ea10e2fec9.
Validation:
Local upgraded Rust workspace: 663 tests passed, 2 ignored; persistent API: 86 library tests plus loopback test passed. Clippy/rustfmt pass. cargo audit has zero vulnerabilities/warnings; cargo deny passes all four categories (existing unused-advisory warnings remain).
Current-head Elixir CI passes: 23 properties, 711 tests, zero failures, 121 excluded; coverage 58.4%, audit and benchmark scripts pass.
The real vclt-gate binary at vcl-ut a8d31ffed8277f70afc8abd5f908304fc57b7c29 admits valid INSPECT and rejects malformed text through the new Elixir invocation. Adversarial path/payload, malformed response, size and timeout tests pass.
Current-head secret scanner, SPARK gate, docs, lock sync, REUSE, dogfood and Hypatia pass. Hypatia includes scoped Panic Attack/Pons steps; this is not proof.
Current Rust CI: tests, coverage, Clippy, fmt, docs, audit, deny and both fuzz builds pass. Only benchmark compilation was still running at the last check; on-demand mutation testing is skipped by its existing trigger.
Blocking reproducer:bash tests/tantivy-upgrade.sh reads the old 0.26.1 id/title/body and search correctly with 0.27.0, then fails because upgrade-fixture remains searchable after deletion/commit. BASELINE_CONTROL=1 bash tests/tantivy-upgrade.sh fails the same assertion on 0.26.1. IDs are tokenised TEXT while deletion uses an exact term. Preserve this failure; a proper fix must cover exact identity, existing-index migration, update uniqueness and restart. Persistent open also drops Document fields/metadata.
Governance now runs and passes the language check, but the shared allowlist rejects the transferred metadatastician/standards owner and both UUID-labelled jobs reject existing non-v8 identifiers. These need coordinated owner decisions, not exemptions or cosmetic identifier replacement: OctadId::generate still uses UUIDv4. The existing optional Exqlite native dependency also needs review before claiming SNIF-only compliance for the whole BEAM dependency graph; retiring our Rustler bridge is narrower.
M0 is documented; M1 has remaining governance blockers. M2/M3 durable IDApTIK/Slavia fixtures are not implemented. No cross-modal crash-atomicity, namespace isolation, Creusot/Idris2 discharge, new ABI/FFI, SNIF benefit, cache/transport benchmark or operational adapter is claimed. Main and external repositories were not changed.
API and gRPC now bind to loopback by default, with IPv6 preferred; an explicit host setting overrides this. CORS is disabled by default, and authentication is not configured automatically. Configure appropriate protections before exposing services to untrusted clients.
Transport
The conventional NIF transport is retired. HTTP remains the default, automatic selection uses HTTP, and explicit NIF requests fail.
Validation
The VCLT gate now limits input, output and execution time, and rejects malformed or incomplete responses.
Documentation
Updated guidance covers transport and storage options, authentication status, and outstanding readiness requirements.
The PR changes VCL gate execution and validation, API listener and CORS defaults, and conventional NIF support. It also updates the modality-contract checker, CI workflows, Tantivy-related checks, storage descriptions, and architecture and readiness documentation.
Changes: VCL gate protocol
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Gate request and response contract elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/query/vclt_gate.ex, elixir-orchestration/test/verisim/query/vclt_gate_test.exs
The gate builds schema-version-1 input and stages it in a private file. It admits only valid responses with matching requested and certified levels from 0 to 10, and returns failed-level reasons for rejection. Tests cover valid and malformed responses.
Timed invocation and resource limits elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/query/vclt_gate.ex, elixir-orchestration/test/verisim/query/vclt_gate_test.exs
The gate invokes the executable with an input-file path and a timeout. It limits input to 1 MiB and output to 64 KiB. Tests check path handling, permissions, cleanup, size limits, and timeout handling.
API listener and access defaults
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Listener and CORS settings rust-core/verisim-api/src/main.rs, rust-core/verisim-api/src/lib.rs, elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/application.ex
The Rust API defaults to loopback, selects IPv4 when VERISIM_ENABLE_IPV4 is enabled, and retains the VERISIM_HOST override. CORS defaults to disabled. The Bandit listener uses its configured address or IPv4 loopback.
Authentication checks and test state rust-core/verisim-api/src/lib.rs
Tests check 401 responses for unauthenticated requests and 403 responses for the tested Reader-key requests. Test state uses a unique temporary persistence directory.
Access and listener documentation README.adoc, KNOWN-ISSUES.adoc, rust-core/verisim-api/src/main.rs
Startup warns that the binary does not configure authentication. The documents describe authentication configuration, listener defaults, disabled CORS, and stated limits of router tests.
Conventional NIF retirement
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Retire native exports and bridge rust-core/verisim-nif/Cargo.toml, rust-core/verisim-nif/src/lib.rs, elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/nif_bridge.ex, elixir-orchestration/test/verisim/transport_test.exs
The Rust crate becomes an rlib marker without Rustler dependencies or native exports. The Elixir bridge returns {:error, :nif_retired}, and loaded?/0 returns false.
Transport and architecture descriptions ARCHITECTURE.adoc, README.adoc, KNOWN-ISSUES.adoc, docs/architecture/snifs-bridge.adoc, docs/getting-started.adoc, elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/transport.ex
The documents mark direct-NIF transport as retired and state that auto uses HTTP. They describe SNIF as unimplemented and set out constraints for possible future compute kernels.
Modality-contract checker
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shell checker and gate integration scripts/check-modality-contract.py, scripts/check-modality-contract.sh, tests/modality-contract-gate.sh, docs/modality-profile.adoc, .github/workflows/doc-consonance.yml
The Python checker is replaced by a Bash checker that uses awk and jq. The gate updates its fixtures and adds checks for malformed JSON, missing Rust structures, and duplicate annotations.
CI and build updates
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reusable workflows and CI inputs .github/workflows/governance.yml, .github/workflows/hypatia-scan.yml, .github/workflows/secret-scanner.yml, .github/workflows/spark-theatre-gate.yml, .github/workflows/rust-ci.yml
The governance, Hypatia, secret-scanner, and spark-theatre jobs use a pinned reusable workflow from metadatastician/standards. Rust CI adds audit permissions and selects cargo-llvm-cov for the coverage installer.
Tantivy upgrade probe and test Cargo.toml, rust-core/verisim-document/examples/index_upgrade_probe.rs, tests/tantivy-upgrade.sh, rust-core/verisim-api/src/groove.rs
Tantivy changes from 0.26 to 0.27. A probe and shell test exercise index reading and deletion across versions. A capability-matching test uses an array instead of a vector.
Storage, state, and readiness record
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Storage descriptions and promotion state ARCHITECTURE.adoc, ROADMAP.adoc, rust-core/verisim-octad/src/ram_promotion.rs
Architecture and roadmap text describe graph and persistence backends and outstanding persistence evidence. PromotedState no longer stores a modality already represented by its map key.
Baseline and verification record docs/architecture/game-estate-readiness.adoc
The new document records baseline claims, CI and verification evidence, dependency and code changes, and outstanding proof and trust obligations.
The document proposes versioned, namespace-scoped inputs, validation, idempotency, durable publication, and owner-assigned evidence gates. It does not claim these requirements are implemented.

Possibly related PRs
hyperpolymath/verisimdb#313: Introduced the modality-profile contract and Python checker that this PR replaces with a shell checker.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 35644
The VCL-total gate treats the documented "off" setting as an executable path, so gated read queries fail instead of the gate being disabled. Overflow can also leave gate subprocesses running after the check returns. These should be fixed before merge. The remaining items are minor: parse-failure rejection detail is lost, and the NIF health result is undocumented. The author already states the PR is a draft with other open blockers.

include a required durable idempotency key, and specify that it is stored
atomically with the coherent publication record and used to reconcile retries
after an unknown outcome. If the source identity and revision are intended to

make bounded drift scoring the first kernel spike and update the later kernel
ordering accordingly, so the document presents one consistent implementation

Review comments at @elixir-orchestration/lib/verisim/query/vclt_gate.ex:
- Line 92: Update the port cleanup in `collect/4` to tolerate `Port.close/1`
raising `ArgumentError` if the port has already closed, then drain any queued
messages for that port from the caller’s mailbox. Preserve the existing gate
result when cleanup encounters a closed port.
Review comments at @elixir-orchestration/test/verisim/query/vclt_gate_test.exs:
- Around line 175-176: Update the stdin-file stub and timeout assertion in the
VCLT gate test to avoid `/proc`: use portable file checks to verify staging, and
check whether the recorded PID is still alive when asserting timeout behaviour.
Preserve the expected `:admit` result and ensure the assertion fails if the gate
process remains alive.

Align the Tantivy upgrade with the documented Rust floor
The upgrade to Tantivy 0.27 raises the minimum compiler to Rust 1.88, as this commit itself records in docs/architecture/game-estate-readiness.adoc, while docs/getting-started.adoc:61 still promises support for Rust 1.80+. Users following the documented prerequisites with Rust 1.80–1.87 can no longer build the workspace. Either retain a compatible Tantivy release or raise and enforce the documented minimum Rust version.
No CI/CD pipeline failures were detected for the current commit. If other checks (security scans, code quality, etc.) are failing, those require separate attention.
Programme/inbox review, 25 October 2026, reviewed head e6f62774154077ac530709cd116ab8ea10e2fec9: preserve this work; do not merge or describe the game-estate integration as ready.
The complete Rust CI (including benchmark compilation) passed, but this does not discharge the retained document deletion/reopen reproducer, atomic cross-modal publication, binary credential setup, namespace/transport enforcement or governance/identifier-policy blockers.
Additional app-review work has been read and belongs in the current worker's acceptance ledger: VCL-total subprocess cleanup must not leak port messages into a long-lived process mailbox or let a Port.info/Port.close race replace a valid result with ArgumentError; test real exit/timeout/overflow cases. Align the Tantivy upgrade's minimum supported Rust version with enforced toolchain/manifest/docs. Durable admission retries need a specified idempotency key atomically associated with publication, including same-key/different-payload rejection. Resolve conflicting SNIF candidate prose without admitting an unmeasured kernel.
The old scanner secret-inheritance thread is marked fixed by the follow-up and should not trigger a second contradictory repair. An outdated test-path finding must be checked against current tests, not auto-applied.
No gate/UUID exception, speculative database cache, wire-format migration, signed-proof claim or source rewrite has been introduced by this review. Maintain one implementation owner and the existing branch; report actual corrected-head tests before resolving remaining findings.

Update the getting-started NIF instructions
With the loader now unconditionally returning :nif_retired, users following docs/getting-started.adoc:443-457 are still told that VERISIM_TRANSPORT=nif enables direct calls and that the native library loads automatically; that configuration instead makes every database operation fail. Remove or rewrite that section to describe the retirement and direct users to HTTP.
Match the compatibility tombstone: HTTP is default, auto uses HTTP,
and explicit nif fails with nif_retired. Preserve the legacy metadata
inventory while marking A2ML retired and the four-format route explicitly.

Expose orchestration to its configured gateway
In the checked-in container deployment, Svalinn connects to http://elixir-orchestration:4000 (container/compose.toml:56), but binding Bandit to 127.0.0.1 makes it reachable only inside the orchestration container. Neither container/compose.toml nor runtime.exs configures :orch_api_ip, so requests from the gateway or through the published port are refused; provide a runtime bind-address setting and configure the container to listen on its internal interface.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Terminate the gate when rejecting oversized output
When a configured gate writes more than 64 KiB and then continues running, this branch returns immediately, while the after block merely closes the BEAM port. OTP documents port_close/1 as closing the port, not terminating the external process group, so the timeout wrapper and gate can remain alive until the five-second deadline imposed by GNU timeout. This is reproducible with a gate that emits 65,537 bytes and sleeps; repeated rejected requests can therefore accumulate subprocesses despite the advertised output budget, so explicitly terminate the process group before returning the size-limit error.
The v1 activation contract defines both an unset value and off as disabled. This guard sends off to run_gate/3, which then attempts to execute a relative path named off. A deployment that uses the documented switch will therefore reject gated read queries instead of disabling the optional gate. Add "off" to this guard and keep the module documentation aligned. Ensure output overflow terminates the complete gate process tree.
When output exceeds @max_output_bytes, collect/4 returns before the five-second timeout expires. The after block closes the port, which terminates GNU timeout, but it does not explicitly terminate the command process group. A command that emits more than 64 KiB and then sleeps or forks can therefore remain alive after check/2 returns. Keep the wrapper alive until its deadline while discarding further output, or explicitly terminate the complete process group. Add a test that asserts that the child exits.

Preserve the producer's top-level rejection reasons.
This parser ignores the response's reasons field and derives details only from failed levels entries. The v1 contract permits a parse failure with an empty levels array and requires its L0 ParseSafe: detail in reasons. This implementation returns ["inadmissible (no detail)"] for that valid response. Prefer validated top-level reasons before the derived fallback. (github.com)

Distinguish NIF operation and health errors.
VERISIM_TRANSPORT=nif does not always return :nif_retired. Retired bridge operations return :nif_retired, but the health check returns :nif_not_operational. Document both results to avoid misleading operators and clients.
Proposed wording
-`VERISIM_TRANSPORT=nif` request fails closed with `:nif_retired`.+NIF operations fail with `:nif_retired`; the health check reports+`:nif_not_operational`.

Review comment at @docs/getting-started.adoc around lines 454 - 455:
Update the transport documentation around VERISIM_TRANSPORT to distinguish NIF
operation failures from health-check results: document that retired bridge
operations return :nif_retired and the health check reports
:nif_not_operational.

Heads-up from the CI/CD overhaul in #319 (same repo, parallel work — full disposition in its docs/UPSTREAM-PROMPTS.adoc §P-318):
Already fixed by #319 for you: (1) CodeRabbit finding #1 (secret-scanner inheritance) — the caller now pins a standards reusable needing no secrets: inherit at all. (2) The governance/hypatia/scorecard startup_failure class had a second, deeper cause found during the overhaul: standards was transferred hyperpolymath → metadatastician (owner_id 6759885 → 297579217); lockfile verification rejects the old owner id and Actions doesn't follow transfers, so all callers + lock records migrated in #319. Governance now actually runs (17/21 jobs green on #319).
Your remaining CodeRabbit items (vclt_gate Port.close tolerance + mailbox drain; vclt test /proc portability; game-estate idempotency-key field; snifs step ordering) and the tantivy identity reproducer are itemised in P-318 — no change to your acceptance criteria.
Two #319 board reds are yours to close (by design, gates not weakened): cargo deny/clippy (Tokio/Tantivy advisory line) and governance Language / package anti-pattern policy, which your bash replacement of check-modality-contract.py satisfies — the revived governance lane now depends on that change, so please keep it. Allowlist Preflight + UUID v7/v8 reds are upstream/owner decisions (standards allowlist lacks metadatastician/*; OctadId migration) — prompted in P-STD-1, do not exemption-patch them.
Rebase notes:#319 changed actions.lock (regenerate, don't hand-merge), unified all standards pins, replaced elixir-ci's inline change-detectors with scripts/ci/detect-changes.sh, and added the evidence gate — new test files must be registered in verification/test-registry.json or test-evidence fails. Merge in either order works; landing #318 second makes the shared board fully green.

Changes: loopback Rust/Elixir listener defaults and CORS off; configured-auth router regressions; bounded fail-closed VCL-total invocation using the producer's v1
--inputcontract; retirement of Rustler/native loading with HTTP preserved; Tokio/Tantivy advisory fixes; coverage/audit and reusable-workflow repairs; Bash/awk/jq modality checker replacing the banned Python file without weakening its controls. No coverage threshold or security exception is relaxed.Current head:

a8d31ffed8277f70afc8abd5f908304fc57b7c29admits valid INSPECT and rejects malformed text through the new Elixir invocation. Adversarial path/payload, malformed response, size and timeout tests pass.Blocking reproducer:
bash tests/tantivy-upgrade.shreads the old 0.26.1 id/title/body and search correctly with 0.27.0, then fails becauseupgrade-fixtureremains searchable after deletion/commit.BASELINE_CONTROL=1 bash tests/tantivy-upgrade.shfails the same assertion on 0.26.1. IDs are tokenised TEXT while deletion uses an exact term. Preserve this failure; a proper fix must cover exact identity, existing-index migration, update uniqueness and restart. Persistent open also drops Document fields/metadata.Governance now runs and passes the language check, but the shared allowlist rejects the transferred
metadatastician/standardsowner and both UUID-labelled jobs reject existing non-v8 identifiers. These need coordinated owner decisions, not exemptions or cosmetic identifier replacement:OctadId::generatestill uses UUIDv4. The existing optional Exqlite native dependency also needs review before claiming SNIF-only compliance for the whole BEAM dependency graph; retiring our Rustler bridge is narrower.M0 is documented; M1 has remaining governance blockers.
