fix(email): verify backups using the declared credential format - #5493
The Email backup verifier rejects the credential format created by the deployment. Independent recovery must be proven before service keys can be moved safely.
What
Verifies the declared credential format while retaining validation and comparison of every stored field. The native restore fixture now uses the same format. Failed recovery checks report a bounded stage without exposing private inputs, so remaining failures can be investigated.
CodeRabbit: freshly read the repository's included-review refusal, provider event 2026-10-28 07:29:41 UTC. It explicitly applies to this public repository and says the included review is used; next review in 58 minutes, approximately 08:27:41 UTC. No current-head review exists on this PR.
Codex: freshly read the authenticated account code-review usage limit, provider event 2026-10-28 06:16:55 UTC. Its scope is the review account; no reset is stated. No credits or paid fallback are authorized, and no current-head review exists on this PR.
Cursor Bugbot: this PR's current-head check 122695859003 completed at 2026-10-28 07:49:31 UTC with Error / “usage limit reached”. It identifies a user/team usage or spend limit requiring an administrator; it is not a findings-bearing neutral review. No findings or threads were delivered.
Observation: 2026-10-28 07:53 UTC. I read the current PR's conversation, submitted reviews, threads and provider check runs before this fallback.
I reviewed the complete five-file change for correctness and secret handling. Every printed stage is a fixed code; collection errors are converted to a closed vocabulary, and anchored filters suppress unknown, multiline and private diagnostics. Failure remains nonzero and cannot become a successful restore. The workflow's source, confirmation, private-input, isolation, matching-version, record-comparison and cleanup guards are unchanged. The real workflow-shell regression covers success, collection and restore refusals, private output suppression, stale source, missing cluster input and cleanup; the collector's formatter also rejects private and multiline errors. Those controls passed in the affected race suite and in current-head CI, including complete Go regressions.
Ready at a38aa21dfdac0d05a737a9bde3de08295d469397. All 51 CI checks passed. The current-head fallback review records each unavailable provider's authenticated evidence and found no correctness or security findings; the native verdict helper returns GREEN self@a38aa21dfdac0d05a737a9bde3de08295d469397. Bugbot's additional neutral check reports a usage limit, not a code finding. There are no unresolved threads or other findings.
I exercised the actual workflow shell from this checkout: matching success, collection and isolated-restore refusal codes, suppression of private/unknown output, stale-source refusal, missing cluster input and private-directory cleanup all passed under the race detector. The complete affected race suite and lint also pass, corroborated by current-head complete Go CI. The output remains limited to fixed stage codes; the existing safety and success conditions are unchanged.
The body contract and fresh-base closing-reference check pass (two commits, no findings), and live platform health is OK. Every readable required gate passes; opaque Code Quality is locally UNVERIFIED and stays enforced by GitHub's normal merge policy.
The real independent backup recovery remains UNVERIFIED after run 40638041154. This change enables a diagnosable main-only rerun; it does not turn the failed proof into success or authorize custody or storage migration before a real passing result.

fix(backup): report safe stages when recovery proof is refused
fix(email): verify backups using the declared credential format
Oct 28, 2026
A regression using the declared credential record format failed before the fix and now passes. The pinned-server restore fixture uses that same format; complete-record comparisons, value validation and bounded diagnostics remain in force.
Current head: afed1e5. Affected race tests, workflow-shell regressions and lint pass. The earlier readiness receipt is stale; this PR is back in draft for current-head native CI and review. Actual independent recovery remains unverified until the protected main-only workflow passes after merge.
Please review the complete change at this head. The earlier review predates the credential-format correction. Current CI passes, including native recovery with both minimal and enriched records; the real deployment recovery is still unverified.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
The recovery verification workflow now labels execution stages and reports allowlisted stage codes for collection and restore failures. Collection errors carry stage information, and unrecognized errors use a bounded fallback. Credential record validation now permits a missing username while retaining password checks. Fixture and runtime tests cover password-only records, optional usernames, stage diagnostics, private-content refusal, and missing cluster configuration.
Failed restore checks will report only the generic phase and not the specific restore stage this change is meant to surface. Verification behavior is unchanged. Fix the log source before merging so a failed recovery rerun can be diagnosed.

Please review the complete current change, including the corrected restore failure stream and bounded wrapper refusal. Affected race tests and lint pass. The prior CodeRabbit finding is fixed and its thread resolved. CodeRabbit’s 12:13 UTC review exhausted this repository’s included allowance; Codex has since delivered current reviews on this repository. Production recovery remains unverified.
Ready at d8e93e0. All 53 checks settled: 42 successful and 11 intentional skips. Current CI includes complete Go regressions and the pinned native restore fixture with minimal and enriched credential records. The real-stream diagnostic regression failed before the fix and now passes; private and unknown output remains suppressed.
Codex’s current-head review is clean. The CodeRabbit finding is fixed, acknowledged and resolved; all conversation, review, thread and provider-check surfaces were reread. No findings remain.
Fresh base c56bbbc, body and closing-reference checks pass. The base delta changes only shared workflow pins, which the protected merge-group checks will exercise. Live platform health is OK. Every readable required gate passes; opaque Code Quality remains independently UNVERIFIED and enforced by GitHub’s normal merge policy.
Actual production backup recovery remains UNVERIFIED. Its main-only proof must pass after merge before credential custody or encrypted-storage changes.
