Timeseries Module Roadmap

Current Status

Production-capable timeseries runtime exists for ingest, Gorilla compression, adaptive flush, query/downsampling, retention, remote-write, and encrypted chunk handling.

In Progress

  • [~] hardening adaptive flush and high-ingest behavior under sustained concurrency pressure (Target: Q3 2026)
  • [~] improving diagnostics consistency across ingest, query, and retention stages (Target: Q3 2026)
  • [~] stabilizing benchmark-backed release guardrails for timeseries hot paths (Target: Q3 2026)

Planned Features

Short-term (3-6 months)

  • tighten deterministic behavior for remote-write and encrypted chunk edge scenarios (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” test_timeseries_highcardinality_stress.cpp, RemoteWriteEdgeCases)
  • expand stress coverage for mixed ingest/query/downsampling workloads (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” test_timeseries_highcardinality_stress.cpp, HighCardinalitySeriesIngest/ConcurrentDownsamplingStress)
  • improve operator-facing diagnostics for retention and flush incidents (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” RUNBOOK_TIMESERIES_STORE.md)

Mid-term (6-12 months)

  • [~] re-baseline p95/p99 envelopes for ingest, range-query, and flush-sensitive paths (Target: Q1 2027 β€” bench_timeseries_dedicated_gates.cpp TS-BM-01..TS-BM-04 in place; hardware run required)
  • [~] broaden benchmark depth for remote-write and lifecycle workload diversity (Target: Q1 2027 β€” bench_timeseries_dedicated_gates.cpp TS-BM-01..TS-BM-04 in place)
  • harden long-run reliability under sustained timeseries load (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” tests/integration/test_timeseries_store_soak.cpp)

  • timeseries_api_contract.h frozen contract header (Phase 1 closure, 2026-07-29)
  • test_timeseries_contract_hardening_focused.cpp β€” TSCH-01..TSCH-16 (Phase 4 closure, 2026-07-29)
  • bench_timeseries_release_gates.cpp β€” TSRG-01..TSRG-06 gate benchmarks (Phase 5 closure, 2026-07-29)
  • remaining hardening tasks closed for ingest/flush/lifecycle edge paths (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” Wave D soak/stress/runbook pass)
  • release benchmark stabilization complete (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” bench_timeseries_dedicated_gates.cpp TS-BM-01..TS-BM-04)

Known Issues and Limitations

  • runtime behavior depends on workload shape, flush configuration, and storage profile.
  • selected flush, retention, and encrypted chunk edge scenarios need continued hardening.
  • benchmark depth should continue expanding for broader timeseries workloads.

Breaking Changes

No breaking timeseries contract planned. Any contract-breaking change requires migration notes and changelog entry before merge.

Program Execution Model β€” Wave Context

This module is a contributing module in the program-level Wave A β†’ B β†’ C β†’ D execution model. It does not own a primary wave deliverable but must remain release_critical-green throughout all waves and must deliver Wave D operability improvements in Q1 2027. See ../../ROADMAP.md for the full wave model and exit criteria.

Wave D Contribution for timeseries

  • Deliver or validate distributed tracing, high-cardinality stress coverage, exporter reliability, and operator remediation hints as applicable to this module (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” test_timeseries_highcardinality_stress.cpp, bench_timeseries_dedicated_gates.cpp, RUNBOOK_TIMESERIES_STORE.md)
  • Contribute to or validate long-duration soak test coverage for this module's primary paths (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” tests/integration/test_timeseries_store_soak.cpp)
  • Ensure runbook coverage for operator-critical scenarios in this module (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” docs/operability/RUNBOOK_TIMESERIES_STORE.md)

Cross-Wave Requirements

  • release_critical CI must remain green on develop throughout all waves (Target: ongoing)
  • p95/p99 benchmarks must be refreshed on representative hardware before Wave D sign-off (Target: Q1 2027)
  • No behavioral regression may be introduced into modules in Wave A/B/C scope from changes in this module.

Program-Level Success Criteria (contribution)

  • This module's distributed/acceleration paths fail closed (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” flush/remote-write fail-safe validated in soak/stress)
  • [~] Benchmark-backed p95/p99 baselines exist on representative hardware (Target: Q1 2027 β€” bench_timeseries_dedicated_gates.cpp TS-BM-01..TS-BM-04; hardware run required)
  • Operator-critical paths have diagnostics, alerts, and runbooks (Completed 2026-09-16 β€” RUNBOOK_TIMESERIES_STORE.md)
